I've given up eating while I'm on the computer. I don't even put a cup of coffee on the desk beside it anymore. I'm sick of sticky keyboards from kids spilling stuff and dribbling crumbs on it. And I ruined a keyboard with a coffee spill. I keep food nearby within a long stretch to reach. LOL.

I eat sunflower seed a lot while I am on line. I find they are missing the bucket as well. I get some keys stuck when the tiny shells gather under the keys. Si I have to turn the key board around and just bang it a few times. They all fall out and I can go back to eating and posting. [giftsandbagscom]

By far the worst one was when I spilled a whole bowl of campbells chicken and stars soup all over my keyboard and desk. Man you just have no idea how many stars are in a can until you are trying to clean it up. There has been coffee spills, baby puke, and once a slice of pizza hit cheese side down. My computer tower and other peripherals are well protected, it's usually my keyboard taking the hits. Its a good thing I work in a computer shop as I go through about 5 keyboards a year. I am not a huge eater or muncher but always have something to drink near the computer. Have a cup of coffee to the right of the mouse. I also ruined a keyboard with a regular soda months ago.I have a water resistant keyboard now but am still not running the risk of having a drink real close by. I also have a tv tray to the left of the keyboard where I keep crafts and have a coaster for water or soda later in the day. I eat up here all the time when I am home alone. It's boring sitting at the kitchen table alone. I might miss something on myLot! Our kids are grown so don't have to worry about spills with kids. I'm not feeling brave enough to spill water purposely on the keyboard to find out if it's waterproof...lol It wasn't an expensive keyboard but is black and my tower and screen are off white. Oh yes, I have actually spat coffee all over my monitor. I sometimes have a mouthful of coffee when I am reading comments, and they are so funny, coffee just goes everywhere. Yes, I've been known to eat and drink near my computer. And there have been many mishaps. Nothing like a dirty keyboard. The incident I remember is when there was a glass left on the desk and during the night, the cat knocked it over onto the keyboard. Hi Whittby. Since the sunday newspaper often comes with a long clear wrapper over it, I have used this wrapper to put over the keyboard. I can see through the wrapper and yet the wrapper protects the keyboard from coffee spills. You might want to try this idea out. Albert [albert2412]

I do eat by the computer but I try not to lean ver it to eat and it is only stuff like potatoe chips and things like that that are super easy to clean up. My pop and coffee are always on the table beside the computer cause if something happened I would feel soooo bad! [mag_keizer2007]

Sadly, despite knowing the risks, I often have a beverage of some sort sitting right beside me on the desk...within inches of my laptop! Luckily, I have not had any liquid to spill into the keyboard. I did have one spill, but the liquid went the opposite direction of the computer! I often eat while sitting at the computer too. There are crumbs around my desk! i am always eating while on the computer! i eat breakfast before work while i am on the computer at home. then when i get home from work i sometimes eat lunch (i work from 9am - 1pm) monday to friday while on the computer and if i go on at night some times i will have a snack! fortunately no i have not had an accident, but sometimes our computer keys are either covered in jam, honey or chocolate! I do eat while using the computer, Whit, but I keep the food and especially any drink at a safe distance. I used to be very good at this, then about 6 months ago I got slack and made a major blunder -- I spilled a chocolate milkshake all over the keyboard / monitor (it's a laptop.) I was horrified! I got everything cleaned off of the computer and it still works fine, but every once in a while I'll find some chocolate shake residue on the computer. [Transdisc]

I'm actually with you. I've (for the most part) given up eating and drinking while at the computer. I just got a new computer and I've become very, VERY protective of it. When I had my old one, I didn't think anything of sitting down with anything from a snack to almost a full meal and chowing while typing. Even though I would eat at the computer, I'd still at least try to not drop anything on the keyboard. I was actually worse when it came to cups getting tipped on the desk. Again though, that has come almost to a complete stop since I got the new computer. I may sit down with a cup and drink/hold the cup with one hand while typing or clicking with the other. But I *will not* take both hands off the cup. And every time I walk away from the desk, I make a point to take the cup with me so I don't forget it's there and tip it when I sit back down. Or worse yet, so someone else who doesn't know it's there does the same. Unfortunately, the kidlets don't quite understand the double standard of mom's allowed to have a drink around the computer, but they're not. Yeah, I know. Not fair. But I'd rather have the double standard and not have them accidentally get forgetful or careless with their drinks near the desk. Oh, I almost forgot to answer my snacking preference while working. I guess I'd have to give the wishy-washy answer that it depends on what type of mood I'm in. I think my latest desk snack was a good old fashioned chocolate bar and a gianormous cup of milk. Mmmmmmm! I try to avoid some of the more crumbly or messy snacks while at the computer, but again, only because it's new and I know I'll cry the first time something gets jammed in the keyboard or spilled on it. The kids are always snacking on cheese and crackers and sometimes they'll bring me a nice slab o' cheese to gnaw on. I guess those are my two usual snacks. I'm hungry now. lol [mamakat]

I always eat while I'm on the computer but I be careful not to spill food and drinks because I'm very protective of my laptop and if I spilled drink on it, I might have to get it fix. My husband and I only have laptops. While we have a desk we keep these on we try to keep the drinks as far away as we can. Our cats like to jump up there sometimes. We never keep cups full of drinks so a little jolt won't spill it and caps are always kept on bottled water. With laptops, we can't afford to spill any drinks on it. If we ruin our keyboard it sort of ruins the whole computer if you know what I mean. We have been lucky so far and I hope this question doesn't jinx us lol. I still continue eating on my keyboard even though it gets sticky or oily right after. I usually watch my TV series marathons or movies on here, so I usually like to have something to munch on. It is mostly chips or cakes and a cola or juice. Whenever I am on mylot, I like having something to munch on. It helps me think better. And the weather here is pretty hot so it somehow makes me feel better when I have a cool drink beside me. I have only managed to spill my drink once. I remember it clearly because I was talking to my ex-girlfriend back then, well, more like arguing. I was drinking a sprite. I remember I was sitting cross legged when this loud bang from the front door totally surprised me. I spilled all of my drink on the keyboard. It's a good thing it didn't reach all of my keyboard. I drink coffee every morning while I am on the computer checking email, message boards, and doing my online work. I have only had one mishap where one of my cats hopped up on the table next to me and flipped out for some reason sending my coffee all over my laptop key board. Luckily the lap top is sealed under the keyboard otherwise it would have shorted out the whole computer. I did have to buy a whole new keyboard though. $45 mishap! I am looking at my keyboard right now and there is nothing but little crumbs all under the keys. I really need to get a can of compressed air to clean it out. I generally eat lunch at my computer while watching a TV show online, at least when I am home alone. I don't really snack much...but there are some little beads and titanium rings from jewelry making stuck under a few keys here and there. That's what I get for making jewelry with my computer open and on. I don't have kids and had never personally had any spillages on the pc, keyboard or other bits to do with my comp. I read your discussion yesterday while at work and didn't get a chance to answer. This morning, I was eating a bowl of cereal here, trying to respond to people, when I looked down and PLOP there went a mouthful of cereal. I eat while Im at the computer. I dont think I have ever spilt anything by it or on it thank god. My husband on the other hand seems to cant eat at his pc without spilling something on it. He had spilled a cup of coffee that was on a shelf above the pc. I usually have a cup of tea, but where it cannot spill on the keyboard and sometimes I eat crackers near the computer. I did almost spill some coffee, but that was almost, but the most is cracker crumbs and all I need to do is to turn the keyboard upside down and then it is fixed. I have my tea on my desk rather than besides the computer so at least I can keep an eye on it, and move the keyboard if it is too near and since the computer room is near the washroom, I can just run in and grab a towel if anything happens. Yes, I have had more than one accident spilling something on my computer. I grit my teeth when I have done that and swear that I will never have drinks near my computer again. But since I like to drink water a lot I end up still bring water to the computer while I am on there. Most time I don't have food here though. I generally am busy typing so I really don't have time to eat anything though. Only once when I spilled something on my keyboard did I have to replace it. I am very careful now. At home, I'll munch here and there, but I'm a little more careful since it's in my bedroom and my computer is fairly new. I don't want to spill anything on the keyboard! I'd be so upset with myself if I did that! To tell you the truth, my fiance is actually the one who has had all the problems like those you mentioned you were having. If you'd like to have a bit of advice, I don't think you'll have to throw away another keyboard! (LOL) The best is that you'll still be able to enjoy your munchies while you're using your computer. Sound good? Ok, so my fiance was drinking orange pop and he spilled it all over his computer. He flipped out because he was so upset with himself, naturally. He told me what had happened and I told him to bring the keyboard to me next time we got together. He that it was as good as trash, but it was a wireless keyboard so I went to work. I'm not sure if this actually works on corded keyboards or not, but if you're going to throw it away anyway, might as well give it a shot! What did I do with it? I filled up my bathtub with hot water, as hot as it would go. I took the electronic mechanisms out of the keyboard (the parts that made it wireless like the batteries and such). I put the entire keyboard with keys and all still attached face-down (keys side down) in the hot water and let it soak in the bathtub overnight. The next morning, obviously the water was cold, but I took the keyboard out and thoroughly dried it. I also let it soak face-down again on a towel just to make sure it would be perfectly "thawed" (LOL) by the time I got back from work. I put the batteries back in it and gave it back to my boyfriend, keeping my fingers crossed, of course. When he got it back, he was amazed. Not only did the keyboard work, it also wasn't a bit sticky! I was even impressed with myself after he told me the news. Pretty neat, huh? I hope that helps your situation! I've also heard you can put a computer keyboard in the dishwasher on a regular wash load and even in the oven to dry, but I don't know that I'd go that far. Funny you should ask about the cell phone! Have you spilled pop on that also? (LOL) Actually, I own a Motorola Razr cell phone and a friend of mine has the same phone. He accidentally left the phone in his jeans pocket and his wife put them through the washer like normal without even knowing what had happened. The funny part was that as soon as his phone dried out, it has worked ever since! I think with cell phones, it's all a matter of what gets wet. I suppose if you're going to throw it away anyway, you could give it a shot putting it in hot water to soak. I would suggest taking the battery out first, though. I know that there are certain mechanisms in a cell phone (other than the battery) that absolutely cannot get wet. I'm not sure what those are specifically, though. Are you somehow watching me while I'm online? I'm pretty careful so I've never spilled anything on my keyboard but I've had sticky or buttery keys already from munching on things and not wiping my hands as well as I should. I've gotten better at that, the last time I cleaned my keyboard very thoroughly I made up my mind to keep it that way and so far so good. However, when I vacuum around my computer I often hear lots of crumbs and pieces of popcorn and the like getting sucked up! I almost always have a drink nearby while I'm on the computer; I start out with my juice, then my coffee in the morning, then I have water and sometimes a cup or two of tea at night but - knock on wood - so far I haven't spilled anything here. I just discovered eating near my computer a couple of months ago. :) Before that I would never bring food or coffee near the computer desk. Besides not wanting crumbs or spills near the PC, I liked moving to the dining room table to take a "coffee break". Recently, I've become kind of addicted to some things online; and I discovered that the coffee cup can be placed in one, particular, place; and a box of CheezIts near the keyboard isn't going to create too major a problem. I'm thinking of stopping the practice again, though, because somehow it just doesn't seem "like me". [LisaHW]
Aside from the chance of spills and crumbs (which is why I never used to bring food or drink near the desk), there's the thing about just sitting in one place, eating and drinking, and having pounds creep on. I used to at least feel as if I was up and down. Now I'm noticing I just settle in for the long haul - which isn't good. :) [LisaHW]
Sometimes, will have breakfast in front of the computer. I will also have some snack in front of it. My keyboard is still ok lol Inever really had food on it or things like that. My boyfriend eat less then me in front of his pc and now his keyboard is almost dead lol. Yeah, It's hard to avoid eating at your computer. We do most of our daily stuffs with your computer, wath movies, check mail, online streaming... And usually when you watch movies you eat! haha... [fhoebe]

I sometimes have food and drinks with me when I use the computer but I never spill onto the keyboard itself. Maybe a little spill on the desk every once in a while. I usually just have something that's not too messy. But I once made the mistake of letting my ten year old cousin use the computer and eat a snack. There were crumbs all in between the rows of keys. I have been using drinks and foods when I am with computer.Now there is no chlidrens in my home.So I have to care only myself.I dont think it is a difficult task. Till now I have no accedents of that kind.I drinks juices and chips and that sort of things.Thanks. [naseefu]
I am known to eat and drink stuff around the Computer, and have spilled stuff from time to time on the keys to where I have to clean them off as well. What I use to clean them, is Compressed air, and then also Clorox wipes. For me when I am at home, a lot of my time is spent online, so this is where I usually eat at too.
