Do You Feel Better Educated Since Getting A Computer

Do you feel that you are better educated since getting a computer and going on line? I believe that I have used my computer as a good source for information. The internet is quite an expansive way of learning and educating ourselves. I let my son play games and also look at certain web sites that provide things for him to help him learn and grow. So all in all I was wondering if going on the computer has helped you and your family better educate yourselves in the long run.

I have never thought of it that way but it does help to educate one's self...I also think of all the ways we now have the opportunity to reach out to the world expanding our horizons....we are not limited by geography! [jillhill]
I suppose it is the computer in a round about way. I feel much more educated now that I write for Helium because I have to learn, research and check out facts. I have degrees, but this gave me a way to force myself to learn new things and perhaps things in directions I would have never gone myself. [Trensue]

I definitely feel I have learned a lot more since having a computer, much more than I ever would have without one and even much more than I care to know. I feel like anything that comes to mind all I have to do is go online to find some kind of answer. There has not been anything that I have looked up that I did not find some kind of information on. It's great for my daughter also. When she asks questions I can go online to get answers and show her relevent pictures. This technology is truly awesome. [lumenmom]
I know the feeling. Since having a computer I also feel better then I did without one and of course more educated. It is true that if you have something come to mind that you would like to know just go right ahead to your on line server and pull it up! Easy as pie. It is also true of the awesome technology. We can use the internet not only for our own information but to help our children as well. It is a great learning source for them. I understand that in the past and including these present times the internet has been used in a negative fashion and some people including children have been hurt through it and engaging in improper activity. As long as parents try to stand firm and keep a watchful eye on the children then we can help them make the most of their time on line. Thank you for the great response. Take care. [bamakelly]

Sure. I am one of those funny people that likes knowing what is going on around me, and I love having a tool like the internet at my fingertips. I spend a substantial amount of time every day looking stuff up or reading up on current events. It is much easier for me to find out information about a specific topic, rather than wading through the newspaper or TV news shows. My husband tends to play around online, and treat the internet like a toy. My daughter is the same way, she likes to play flash games. [milkmaid]

When I was at university I hated computers and didn't ever use the Internet. i read countless books instead and wrote 90% of my assignments by hand. My lecturers wanted me to use the Internet. When I began my first teaching post the head teacher wanted me to get good with computers. Then a half price computers for teachers started up and I got my own computer from that special deal. I soon found the Internet was enjoyable as well as educational. Using a computer has made my hand writing slower but the Internet has given me lots of education. [maximax8]
That is good that it all seemed to work out for you. Some read books and some find the research works out just as well on the computer. I can see that writing so much can be tiring and the computer with a printer seems a little more feasible. I don't have a printer however but it seems to be working out just fine. But anyway back to the topic. It is a good thing that you came to find that the internet was enjoyable and you also felt educated by it. There are a lot of people that feel the same way that you do. Take care. [bamakelly]

Oh, yes! The internet came along when my boys were old enough to be curious and young enough to not mind my supervision. We all learned a lot about things--nature, hobbies, science, their homework. Even now the internet is my research tool for my writing, for things I need, for price shopping, finding out more about things I hear about and want to know more of. I don't play much on the computer, it's pretty much business and knowledge. [dragon54u]

Nno not any smarter or more educated as you have to be able to remember and I don't remember to much. The only thing I can say is I have gotten fatter from just sitting here and reading and typing and playing games or chatting. Well, I did learn somethings as finding great friend like you online. Your friend onlydia [onlydia]

We use the internet for information all the time. It makes getting information so fast and simple that I know we have to be better educated. Between the two of us we must make 2 or 3 inquiries a day. [savypat]
That is a good thing that you are able to use the internet for the information that you need. I do find it quite convenient myself. Almost would be lost without it. It can be a great time passer sometimes. You are right. The internet does make getting information so fast and simple. And of course you are better educated for it. Make a couple of inquiries a day and finding your answers right there on the computer screen is even better. I wish you continued fun and success being on line and also coming here to myLot as a member. Take care. [bamakelly]

Yes I agree to the fact that computer really help us get better education. While we are studying sometimes we feel that it would have better if we can get some more information some topic. Then we need to check one or two reference book. But it is not always possible to buy one or two extra reference book for each subject you study. In that case we can easily get some detailed info of something from the internet. Internet is like a big big library and the best part is that you don't even need to leave your house to get the info you need. Apart from this there is also some facilities that computer and internet provide in field of education. For example "online class". It is nice concept that people form different places can join the same class and get benefited from that. Another thing is audio video tutorial. I think audio video tutorials really make things easy to understand because if we can visualize something then we get it quickly and can keep it in mind for longer time. [arkasen]
Yes it does help so much with wanting more education and learning new things. THere are many different facets involved with having internet access. My internet runs pretty efficiently however I don't have some of the amenities that the internet can provide. Nevertheless I am still happy with the quality of the computer and the internet in which I can receive multitudes of information. You are right. The internet is like a big library. Tons of facts and information that can be used in every day living. Audio video tutorial is something that I have vaguely heard of. As I have mentioned before I don't have all of the luxuries or peripherals that can come along with some computers but I still can get the great advantages it has. [bamakelly]

I certainly agree with this discussion. I feel extremely more intelligent since my days on the computer has started. Like my friend has said to me, the Computers And Laptops in general are like our encyclopedia. I certainly think so. Once I log online, I'll never know what kind of information and knowledge I might be getting. What I do know is that the internet specifically and of course through the medium computer, has enabled me to gain lots of research information and before log on, I don't know anything up till I know a lot of things after I logged out. It goes to show that it has influenced me for the better. But there are also bad things on the net like all these not so good sites where people go and surf and get their minds dirtied. Just like in life, we have choices and once we log on, we can choose wisely whether we want to make our online time a worthwhile one or just a wasteful one. Nowadays there are even laptops catered for children for educational purposes and I think that's a really good move. Good discussion here. blink [zed_k4]

It's hard to say this, my computer really give me a lot of information, I don't like read newspapers, but I can read that information through the websites, such as MSN, YAHOO.. so this give me a lot of information, and when I want to know something, I can search from the internet, and I will always get my information, but mostly I use the computer as a TV, I use it watch movie. [kindy198636]

Yes I got better educated when I and my husband had a computer here at home. I loved playing games, surfing the internet and checking the parts and other stuff related to computers. I love the fact that I was able to learn a lot of things about computer because it is easier to learn things when you have the computer itself. My son is now seven months old and I am already carrying him while I am using the computer. I am showing to him the things I am doing so that I he will learn. I am playing children songs here and he loves listening to them. I guess computers are no longer luxury because there are already a lot of affordable computers anywhere. It is better to have a computer at home than other not so important things. Computer will help you a lot as long as you know how and when to use it. Computer addiction is not good either so better know the use of computer than just buying one for accessory. [Yori88]
That is a good thing that you have a computer in your home and that you indeed feel better educated since that. I also like to play games once in while and win tokens to enter into contests. Not all of it is educational based but it has served to teach me a few things I didn't know before when it comes to certain sites that I do visit. That is good that you have the idea to start with your child. When he grows older he might be more prone to going onto the computer and learning some things with your help. That is true about the expense of computers. Also I agree that they can become addictive. But if used in the proper fashion the computer can be beneficial for som many people. Thanks for your opinion on this. [bamakelly]

I don't know but indeed it was a great help. I wished I could have computer in my school time, I could have used it in a better way but nevertheless my next generation would use it to gain more and more experience and information. Internet is something where I can find anything. I mean I don't get mad at any question these days. As I can simply log in and find the correct answer at Wickypedia, isn't it? [sanuanu]

Education is important and that is why the famuly sacrificed money for an Internet connection rather than spending it on something else. The amount of knowedge that can be extracted from the Internet has more value than the money spent to remain connected. In general my offspring are allowed to go anywhere they want to venture into except for adult sites and sites suspected of releasing malware to visitors. So far they have complied. The punishment is a one week curfew from the Internet. all the best, ninja rosdimy [rosdimy]

i do think i have learned alot from the computer. i like learning new things. [ANTIQUELADY]

Kelly- It's definately made certain things more accessible. I love the fact that I don't have to sit in a library to read journals anymore lol. I think that the internet can be a wonderful tool, but I also think persons need to know how to use it. I mean, today anyone can create a webpage but it doesn't necessarily mean that information provided on it is accurate. I have to say though that I still prefer reading books for the most part. Not that I don't use the internet, as I do for school all of the time, but there is still something in books that I truly enjoy. I think it's also about balance. I have to say I've learned a lot from various sources. I've learned some from the internet, some from books, and some from personal life experience. Namaste-Anora [Anora_Eldorath]
Hi Anora. You have a good opinion on the subject I brought forth. I found it interesting to see how many people view the computer and going on line and the numerous opinions about how educational it has been. There is definitely no replacement for reading books. I used to read books a lot more years ago before the internet and its modern technology became so advanced. The computer can become addictive yet we can learn from it every day at our finger tips. It is good that you can rely on the internet for school. You also raise a good point that there are various sources of which to go by but the computer has been much more helpful to a lot of people since its integration in today's society. Take care friend. [bamakelly]

Yes.Absolutely! When I'm curious about some topics,MR. INTERNET answers most of my questions and left me satisfied with it. Using the Internet is more advantageous really for people like me, I'm a moody type so I sometimes prefer the easy, comfy and enjoyable part to research. I wont discourage going to the library and search though but as our generation gets busier, well then I have to say INTERNET plays a unique and helpful part in our quest for knowledge. [quennie_ghurl]

i don't find the internet is very important for our life. and if without it , i will more carmlful and healthy. i always think about it. and don't do the useful things when i thought about it. so it is more harmful for me. [fwangaa]
I suppose that there are different ways of looking at this question. Some people would rather have a computer and would be lost without the advantages of it and then there are some like yourself that would be better without one. I can appreciate that. You know what your feelings are in this matter and you stick with it. I didn't think that the computer would be more harmful to someone but I guess that it depends on you personally. Thank you for your honesty. [bamakelly]

I think the computer is like the double-edged sword. On one hand, it really brings more convenience to people's work and life. We can know what happens globally and locally on time, and it also raises our work efficiency, even we can buy anything we need on net instead of going out. That's why so many young people has the problems of social communication. On the other hand, people talks many things on line instead of face to face, even reading the electronic book, play games on line instead of close to nature......., however,i should admit that i cann't live without computer, how about u? [wgh423]

Yes it definately has..now you dont have to depend on hard copies for any information, its just a click away.. its become a boom for the current generation [sonal1024]
That is so true. No more hard copies. The computer can make it so much easier to get the things done that we couldn't before. If you want information you are basically a click away and that can be so convenient. I don't mind getting information from a dictionary or encyclopedia however I have found it is easy to obtain that information on line now. Today's technology has made it quite easy for us as a society. It certainly can be depicted as a boom for our current world. It is an advancement made in the past years and is used as a great tool to educate people. Take care and thank you. [bamakelly]

I defiantly think that my family and I have learnt alot from having a computer and internet. There are so many possiblities out there. It is a great learning opurtunity and it is amazing to think how much the internet has grown since it started up! [farmerbrown]

yeah...of course! There is no other way we ll feel bad about it.I think its one of the best thing these days to be connected with our family and friends of schools and colleges. Not only that It is a very good medium of sharing knowledge and keeping onself updated with the happening in the world. Can anybody name one thing that is not available on net...isn'it a worth invention of humankind! cheers to them:):) have a happy mylotting:!:) [geetikasingh]

Hi bamakelly, well Education has no direct connection with your computer. But,yes you can learn some new things with help your computer. You can see new sites in your computer, start playing educational games or learn useful software like photo shop.I hope I helped.Happy mylotting. [bumba1988]

yesh i think so .the internet does help me a lot. i get a lot information from that, especially when i meet problem in taking care of my kid. and i don't think it's expensive. [anniecheung216]

Hi bamakelly, I feel now a days computer is playing a vital role in human life.If we really use in a good way than i think we can make wonders,it all depends as how you use it.You can learn lots of information from the internet.Depending upon the usage of the internet you can turn yourself into millionare or you a bad person. All depends upon as how you take the internet into your hands. Have a nice day [sudhajosyula50]

Yes, I think I can get much more information with a computer. I can use a computer to instead of "pen and paper". This process improves the writing skills and makes it fast. When I write a paper, I always use computer to search, choose and store the useful materials. When I want to learn about some new things, I always use the search enging, such as google, baidu. I believe that computer can be a good tool for people to study. You can obtain a new experience through learning by computer. [gongchhua]

Sure, internet provides us many things. Lot's of information, games, music, videos and the freedom to create a virtual world of your own. Educated...maybe in some areas. But then again it's just another learning tool.happy [reckon21]

many parents do not allow their children playyng computer,i oppose, ithink the network can leam a lot of books on people ang living things in less than secondary school. [miniheven]

I guess so.I mean,I havent tried using the computer much before unlike today. However,I agree to you that having a computer with access to the internet is very helpful in expanding and widening our knowledge. Having a pc is pretty much advantage, you can be updated and you can learn new things as much as you want. As of now,im downloading some ebooks,I sometimes read them when I have a vacant time. [sagapo121845]

yeah i too feel that i have better educated.and have got a lot of touch in operating pc better than when it was new to me or i was new to it.i have not married to make my son play on pc.anyway i try to make my brother to be perfect on operating pc.i also make him to have a look at all good and bad .then he might be able to choose what suits him may be good one.i too get a lot of information about my studies .i get a lot of knowledge related to my studies.i also research all the things belongs to history.so i feel that i have better educated getting my pc!!! [hotman19902009]

yes, i think so... whenever there is something that i need to know, i google it right away. when my kids are sick or there is something they have on their skin, i google it right away, so i'll know what to do, saves me the worrying. my kids do their research online especially my eldest daughter. whenever she has an assignment, she would go online right away, and print whatever it is that she needs. all my 3 kids started early in the computer, my daughter was using it since she was two, my second child when she was closer to 2 and now my youngest is the same also. what we give them are educational games, they not already play they learn also, and they learn it wuickly, the colors, shapes, numbers, and letters. when my daughter attended her nursery, she was by far the highest on class, because she knows already what the teacher is teaching [jayrene]

Certainly, computer is the best source of getting education and training. No comparison for that. To give an example, some thirty years back I had a longing to buy Encyclopaedia Britannica that at time I was aware of and that I thought was the best source of information. But I couldn't afford that. What a wonderful transformation of the situation now for you have several Encypaedias at your finger tips and you have thousands of teachers to answer any of your questions on the websites on any damn thing you think of. More importantly all these things cost you nothing but a meagre amount of money. If you are a regular surfer of net e.g., if you are a regular visitor of myLot for example, each given day will be instrumental in adding something to your knowledge. Also if you were previously a novice in operating computer, each given day will further equip you of many versatile attributes of computer. Some twenty-five years back I gave my son a computer to operate. At that times he used to play games only. After high school graduation he started his formal education in IT and has graduated now. But I can assure you that his practical technical training contributed more than his formal schooling to let him become well-versed and proficient in computer. [stahir45]

Computer helps us to educate in the sense of knowing a lot things though limited still. What I mean is not all items are put into their datas unlike the books we are using before as basic tool in education. About playing games online sometimes it will help to practice our motor skills. But depends upon the game we play. Talking about searching informations computer also is a big help using our websites. In general talking about this device it help us we know but it is still a device that man has developed. But let us thank to the new technology. [mods196621]

hiya bamakelly happy I wouldn't say I feel better educated, just more of a range, something different to help in communication. It certainly is a good source of inforamtion and I love to see my granddaughter on learning sites. She is only 4 and it makes me wonder just how much knowledge and information she is going to have when she is my age! blink Alice happy [Aliceinwebland]

well~~internet does help me find a lot of information~~but,in other way, it makes me get more and more quiet in my daily life...maybe i talk ,see and play too much on the computer.it have good side and bad side.~~ [janeycat11]

I am actually a huge fan of educating yourself as opposed to traditional methods of education such as college. I tried college for a couple of years and found that it was more indoctrinating than actually educational. I tell people all the time that I can and do learn more in one day on the Internet than I do going to class for an entire week. Not only does the Internet allow me access to massive amounts of information, but it allows for discussions between people all around the world on every topic imaginable. It allows for people to make their own decisions about what they believe because they can research and learn about opposing viewpoints. Teachers are supposed to be unbiased, but it is really impossible for anyone to be completely unbiased. Your life experiences color the way you see things, so in a classroom setting where the topic is debatable, many teachers tend to teach in a way that doesn't allow room for alternative beliefs. For instance, (and I'm not going to go into specifics here) a lot of what is included in history Textbooks is skewed, making certain Political figures look worse than they were and some better than they were, policies that are given credit to helping the economy when according to economists, the economy helped itself. And that is only one example. With the Internet, myself and others have the opportunity to research on our own and discover what it is that we believe and not just believe what people tell us to believe. It does have some downsides, however, because a person HAS to do the research. There is a lot of misinformation out there, so to truly educate yourself, you have to go out and read through multiple sources, not only one. In my personal experience, I use the Internet to educate myself on a multitude of topics. I use it to keep myself updated on what is going on in the world, for Photoshop tutorials, the best kind of food to feed your dog, different religions, etc. With the Internet being an ever-growing source of information, the possibilities for educating yourself is endless. So yes, I feel that I am better educated with the advantage of having the Internet at my fingertips. [rea_of_sunshine]

Getting a computer help me a long way, I was studing to become a patient care assistant and I got a lot of imformaton on the computer a whole, whole lot of imformaton, so it help me to be better educated in the field in which I choose. [MasonL]

Yes ofcourse. It also helped me in different ways. Entertainment, information gathering, data processing, home work, doing jobs, almost everything. So all in all, computer did not just educate me, but helped me entirely. [subsistence]

Yeah, do agree with you that computers are gettting so common nowadays that we hardly get someone who's without computer at home. Internet is indeed a good source of information and a good tool for communication as well. I gained more information and news and at the same time know quite a lot of friends online. So, i'll say that having a computer and internet as well really help a lot of self improvement and learning, in the sense that if we use it in a proper way,of course. [aikhong]

i feel that i am more educated since getting a computer. since getting a computer, i have been able to get access to the internet. as we all know, internet has unlimited information. may it be good for us or bad for us. the internet contains information that could help us get through our studies in grade school, high school or college. we can find it all in the internet. Even if we were not in school, we could learn things with the use of the internet and the computer, that college student learn in universities. [petuchini36]

Well, I guess in a sense yes because I use the internet as a reference tool whenever I need to look something up. It is so much more convenient to just go online and look something up on Wikipedia or encylcopedia.com or whatever than it is to go look it up in a book. It is a lot faster as well. I know I go online every day and I think I do go to Wikipedia every day to look something up. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!! happy [schulzie]

Well, I wouldn't say maore educated, for there are many of us that are still ignorant out there. Besides, having a computer doesn't mean much if you don't have any Internet coonection. ;) But it's not my place to judge. I haven't met one ignorant myLotter on here, so that's a good thing. I think I'm going to stay a little longer. ;D But yes, I guess the Internet makes finding resources and information easier. I feel more in tune with the world. I also feel more aware of what's happening around me. Whenever you didn't catch news earlier during the day, you can go back and do your own little research about it in the comfort of your own home. Having a computer opens your eyes to things and many are some things that you wish that you had been left in the dark about. But I guess that depends on what kinds of things you are looking for. But yes, a computer is a very important device to have in today's world. [Cillysophie]

yup, its like having a encyclopedia, dictionary and all the people in the world. since i started using the computer learning became easier and more exciting. [paolo412]
