Do You Keep Old Computer Parts Or You Throw Them

I was asking this just because today my mouse was not working and I had to send some files to my friend and using keyboard is really irritating then I remembered that I got old mouse which I connected and found that it was working and it helped me at that point of time, even my sister had some designing work so was safe from orders just because of that, otherwise I would have to go to check this mouse because technicians have habit of giving false commitments or I would have to buy the new one, but thanks to this old mouse which helped me, now I can call the technician to repair or replace this mouse and if he delays by a day or two is also fine for me.

Hi, Friend i doesn't throw any parts away. They can be serviced and used. I had a old computer with a configuration of only 128mb RAM, 40 GB Hard Disk. I got money to buy a new system, i have just kept all the old parts of my PC and then i had bought the system. In my new PC i found hard disk was failure and i was using old one. So don't throw any old parts. It will sure be useful at any time. Happy mylotting. Have a nice day. [cognoscentethelegend]

I also have some CAD work to be done and my wireless mouse was not wroking after reading the discussion posted by you I also realised I have my old mouse wired one though but in working condition, will be using that. [pratibi]

I keep all the accessories of the old computer safe as it becomes handy when there is some trouble with any of the parts of the new computer, especially the mouse. [yogambal_64]

hi rakesh284 I have a few old pc's that I've stored away and I will not throw them out. They are useful in case a newer pc should break and when I can't afford a new pc, then I'll reuse my old pc. So it can save money. Also the older parts have components like floppy disks. I still store a lot of files on floppy disks. So whenever I want to use them, I just turn on my old pc. happyday! [dasani]

I tend to be a collector of items that maybe can turn out useful later on, my boyfriend is also like that, especially with computers and his gadgets. If something breaks down he normally has some other equipment on stock which he can fix or exchange the broken parts with. [Downwindz]

i never throw such things... recently i found some fault in my cpu. it is not getting power in it.. I have one spare power wire of CPU and i tried that and its really work for me... I thought it was big problem in my cpu but in the end it was just wire mistake. Also I am using one of my old keyboard. Because some keys from my new keyboard are not working properly so i have to switch to my old keyboard.... So we shouldn't throw the old computers. It can be useful in future for sure. [padhiaranand]

Lol i had kept somekey boards and mouse that were not working , i had puchased new ones, one day i gave them to a shop owner in the market for repair, he could repair 2 key boards and one mouse, but i am sorry to say that they never worked properly, in my opinion purchasing new are best... Thank you so much for this discussion. lol . Merry X mas. surrender ARUN [arun2009]

I never give them a second look and they are given away by weight lolI have lost count of the number of mouses (or number of mice lolspeakers, monitors that I have replaced and gone in for brand new computers. Ofcourse it is disturbing to see these almost looking new (but dead) parts given away by weight!!I just donated my old computer to the technician who attends to my computer maintenance. He deserved it as he is prompt and quick. [allknowing]

Nah, don't really throw them. Usually I used them for many things. Like a RAM, I used them as a keychain. Some part on VGA, FAN, Cable, etc I can use them also by canibalizing them. But I usually throw the really-unusable part away as I have no benefit by keeping them. [blablablu]

normally i have no extra computer parts and only buy new parts when the old are broken and can't use any more but if it still can be used i won't throw it. my desktop was bought 5 years ago and that's really old and slow but i won't throw it and just keep it on the house. and it maybe useful later. [celebratelifeh]

I always keep my computer hardware is not used anymore. examples of hardware that I still keep is DDR memory 1,though I have a computer memory using DDR 2, but I still DDR memory I keep my old. [senzzz]

depends on what the part is.but yes,i usually salvage as much as i can off older computers, particularily things like power boxes.you never know when you might need it. [scarlet_woman]

mouse here in my country cost cheap so i never really had any of my old mice repaired. i just buy one whenever I need new one. that is also why i have tons of non-working ones on my storage. i rarely throw away such stuff because i always fl that i may be able to use their parts in the future. we even have tn of desktop computers and laptops which are all defective but are still stored because we might still be able to use them or their parts. [calai618]

I don't have a habbit of throwing old PC components out . At times , as you mentioned above , they come in handy . I even have the old Floppy drive which is about a decade old . But I haven't yet come across situations where I found those old components very helpful or handy . [Blizzerand]

I do keep them if they are usable. However, if it is too big for storage purposes, then I will have to either sell them, give to someone else who wants it, or if not throw it away. However, for internal hard drive, I either re-use it with my new pc or I will reformat it and use as an external hard drive. I remembered once my LCD screen had this green line after 1 month of purchase and luckily, I still had my old CRT screen thus I connected my pc to my CRT to verify if it was my LCD problem or if it was my hardware problem. And it turned out to be my 1 month of LCD problem which thanks to the 1 yr warranty, I got a free replacement on within the next 24 hrs. [warvial]

i keep some of my old parts but it depends what it is. i have my old harddrive still even though i know it doesn't work. i can still across whats on it so i don't throw it away. but if the part is no longer any good then i will throw it out. some stuff is just not worth keeping and some are because you never know when you might need them for backup. [sameroad]

Sometimes I do keep old computer parts in case I need them for something, but often times I will take my old parts to the e-recycling place where I live. They recycle old computer parts and repair them, or they turn them into new parts for other computers. [rogue13xmen13]

I keep them in my locker.i buy the parts that are not with them, then assemble it and sell it to any customer and earn some money [pushpendra_kumar29]

I don't keep old pieces of computers around. My papa does however, it's one of his many kooks. He is a technology nut, and for some reason thinks that every computer part will someday have some purpose. So alas our house is strewn with old speakers, keyboards, motherboards, towers, screens, chips, etc. It's ridiculous, we look like a old pawn shop or something. He also likes to hold onto lots of old stereo parts, like old stereos. I mean like those big record player parts. It's hilarious. [snafushe]

Yes, I always tend to keep hold of computer parts. I still have an old Fax Modem and even a Travan Tape Drive lurking around, which I am very unlikely to use again. It seems a pity to throw them away since someone may want them at some time. [Asylum]

yes rakesh284 either working or not. it helps me so much whenever i needed some part especially if i cant buy a replacement immediately. just like when one key on my keyboard cant seem to work and i have a project which should be submitted the next day. when i opened the keyboard, theres a hole on that rubber where key touches to bounce back. luckily i kept one damaged keyboard and get some replacement part from it. its almost late at night and buying another seem to be very impossible. good thing i managed to repair it and use again. [drakesuyat]

In the past I wouldn't throw old parts, but when I found out that they were stored for years without being used I began doing so, at least the ones that didn't seem useful to me. However I'm glad I kept a mouse and a keyboard just in case. [madteaparty]

If i were you, i would buy a new one. Some of my old computer parts don't match the ports of new computer.I have to throw them away. [lihocc]

I do not usually throw them out. I usually just throw them somewhere around the house. They can be use full at times because now i am back to my mouse with a ball. My optical mouse somehow got damaged so back to the old days. [Renhard]

Neither. When a part gets old, I sell it on eBay and the money I make from that can go towards or help pay for the new part. It's really sensible this way in my opinion. [gohan2091]

I don't really throw away any of my old computer parts either. I like to keep some of the hardware in case there is such an emergency like a fire. Then I will be able to start up with the old system till I am able to save enough to buy a new computer hardware. [nijolechu]

Hi rakesh284! I usually sell my old computers but if it is damaged, I rather throw them away than to have it serviced. Service labor here in my country is very much expensive so it would be better for me buy a new one than to have my item repaired. Selling an old computer is my best option. The money from which I have sell could add up to a new item I want to buy. Happy mylotting! [sachii315]

This is only my second computer and I do have all the parts for my old one stored in a box and put up in the basement. I did have to replace my mouse on this computer and a friend gave me some of her old ones to try out they worked for a while but I did have to finally buy a new one. I brought it from Walmart and it was not to expense but I did keep the other ones even though they are not working. [happy6162]

I don't throw away any computer parts. The least I can do is to recycle them by going to Best Buy's Geek Squad and donating them. But there's 4 things I don't throw away OR recycle. The keyboard, the mouse, the monitor, and the hard drive. Place the hard drive in an enclosure, and it works as an external hard drive. Extra storage for your new computer. I don't discard or recycle my hard drive because it has whatever I have on there, and any pro can restore a hard drive's contents. I also don't throw away the keyboard or the mouse because I need to use them in another computer. Same with my monitor. Unless the pins are bent and unusable, I need it because I can't use my new computer without my monitor. Those are the only things I can't discard or recycle. I need these four parts! [DuoMaxwell]

I don't suppose computer parts are any good with everything being updated all the time. However, being a qualified IT Technician myself I understand that at times it can be important. Components like memory are very important to keep if they are working. I think when people just throw computers out because they are old, well it's likely that something will be working within that pc and as a technician it's good to do some fishing! Andrew [AndrewFreyne]

I can not keep all of them, most of them was thrown, my earphone and mouse often was broken, i change them and throw the old one. [kevinll]

i never keep any old part of computer. i like to prefer the new one. [thedenver]

I used to be like a squirrel or ants .. collecting many things especially the techy things. I think this might be useful for me later. Finally all those stuffs filled my shelves. Many times it helped me as well, later when I got busy with my jos.. One day I threw all those stuffs out of my shelves. I am a curious person, when I see something I think how it works or what is inside of it happy. I had spoiled many clocks, time pieces, tape recorders, radios, watches etc by trying to play with them. Peace. [Harley009]

i don't have any old computer parts but am pretty sure i wouldn't want any old computer parts hanging around my home,so i would throw them away.if they ain't good, well get rid of them. [DOLLYBABY]

i got my old gateway harddrive. i'm using it right now to put my mouse on and move around. its basicly a counter for drinks as well, lol. i could recycle other computer parts. i heard of a website where you can recycle old computer parts. [elmiko]

I keep them in my store room even if its of no use or a thrown away material. But keep them here bcoz I feel very sad , throwing items which I am very much connected to. [coolcat123]

Yeah I never throw any of my computer old parts because in emergency they helps me a lot. Number of times I used those old parts like mouse and power cable etc until I got a new one. [vcreddy]

Hello rakesh and me too never like to throw away mine computer pheripheral even if it is outdated.Yeah actually got this habbit from mine hardware course, there used to be lying many such part in the class room, for teaching purpose, and experimenting over it.Well now am having an P3 computer system, but still there is mine old P2 system with many spare parts to it.Often do i check it for revising my knowledge about the computer hardware. Now also the mouse with the new system got damaged so am using the earlier mouse got for the P2.Am enjoying the benefits of spare parts, but also am not willing to give up my P2 even though am having an new upgraded system.Anyways it was an nice discusison of yours, Happy mylotting. [checkmail]

Yes, I keep my old computer parts. I am the type of person that hardly ever throw thing away, so I definitely keep parts from other computers, I have speakers, keyboards, mouse, even monitors from other computers, I really do need to get rid of some of those things. I have given parts to other family members that need them. They really do come in handy. [Chevee]

I do not usually accumulate spare computer parts. I usually try to make sure that a keyboard or other computer equipment is not fixable before I go to buy another one. Thus, I usually throw the old stuff away as soon as I get the new stuff in place. I want to learn to build computers, so I likely going to try to start collecting the stuff to do this, and when I do, I am going to have to find a place to store it all until I get ready to start putting a computer together... [goldeneagle]

Hi there, That's so lucky of you. For me, if I update my computer I used to give the old part to my friend or just sell them out. So if I meet the situation which you've mentioned, I think I have to buy a new mouse instantly. [lullaby2005]
