Yes, I always shut my computer down at night. I have been told that it will wear out the parts more quickly, but I prefer that to the risk of a fire that can happen with electrical equipment. I have had my computer for around 5 years, and I can't say that shutting it down has hurt it in any way.. :-) Derek [derek_a]

I never switch off my computer unless I am going to be away for a few days. Even then I might not bother - it would depend on what work I am doing on it and whether or not I would like it to continue while I am away. I clicked on the link in your post but I am afraid I didn't understand what the icons were doing. Ah well, I have been doing this for years and have never had any bother so I guess I will just continue to leave my pc on. My hubby is a computer engineer and my two sons work in IT and web design. For sure! Though laptops doesn't make loud sounds like the PCs, I don't see any reason to keep my laptop on the whole night. It's not only a waste of energy but you can put your house down by overheat, though it's not really much happening to laptops but better be safe than sorry. Ha, ha, what is this? the war of the icons? Anyway, in answer to your question. I always log out and shut off my computer, when not in use. I learned the hard way. A couple of months ago I fell asleep on the sofa and forgot to shut off my computer. In the morning I realized that there had been a power failure during the night since nothing worked, ie. my phone, my tv and my computer. I got my TV fixed the same day, my phone about three days later but my computer did not boot up properly. It was running but the screen stayed blank. So I called my trusted IT techie who promised to come but he let me wait 2 weeks. What a pain, I had to go to the library to get my e-mail and use the internet. Finanlly he showed up but had to take the computer unit away. He fixed it and brought it back 3 days later. There had been a Flash Drive in the USB port which got zapped either when the power went off or came back on. That was the problem and it cost me some money. So now I try and shut it off. Oh Hi there! Yes, there is a rule in our house to always shutdown the computer when going to bed or if no one is going to use it. we only have two computers at home. No i do not shut my computer down when i go to bed. I set the timer on it to go to hibernate mode after half an hour. So when i go to sleep, it hibernates automatically. My iMac has a feature to scheduled a shutdown at a particular time and that IS how I turn off my computer. I don't leave it on only because I'm power conscious and where we live we often have power outages. If I remember, I usually turn my computer off at night. If I don't, I always regret it the next morning. On occasion when I do forget, it seems like my computer is in locked up mode. I was told a long time ago that it saves considerably on electricity becaus computers have clocks and things that will keep them operating 24/7 if you do not turn them off. The misconception some people have that it is better to leave it on all the time is not true and is in fact costing you some on your electric bill every month that is unnecessary. Shut it down. I usually do because I have a laptop. If I kept my computer on I wouldn't be able to close it and that would allow dirt and dust to get into the keyboard. HI Ronald, Sure I do. Why would I leave the computer running since I am sleeping and not doing anything? The only time I leave it on is when I am still running some programs that will work by themselves when I am sleeping. But really, I don't like to leave the computer on when I am sleeping because we are in the same room. It's kinda of disturbing to my sleep. cry [lordwarwizard]

I don't logg my computer off before I go to bed because I have programs that I let run during the night and I don't think they would run if I shut my computer off completely. But I do shut off my monitor. I don't like to keep it on when I am not using the computer because it just runs the life out of it that much sooner. I can't click your link until after I post my response so I don't know what it is the link, but I will take a look after I post this. Lol, thats quite amusing! I do switch my computer off every night, mainly to save energy, and also because I think the computer needs a rest every now and again to be fully functional too. [UK_Shree]
