Do You Shut Down Your Computer

Hello! If you have to leave in between for some 1-2 hrs work at home only like cooking or some household work, do you turn off your computer or leave it on? Do you shut down your computer even when you have taken half an hour or one hour break? Usually at my home, computer is on from morning to night. We don't shutdown it as I work continuosly for hours on my computer & take small breaks in between of half an hour. What about you?

I leave it on but I use a screen saver. I figure, it would use up just the same enough power if I shut it down/reboot again. [bumblinbetty31]

My computer is always doing something. When I am away, that doesn't mean the computer is just sitting there eating electricity. Programs are running. K'Torrent, Amule, and Boic are three programs that require little attention from the user of a Linux computer. The monitor goes into standby mode if I need to go away for short times, when I go to bed, I shut off it's power. The monitor is the power hog of my system. * The computer gets turned off when something needs to be done inside the tower. The tower is the case that holds the mother board, the hard drive, and the power casing. It needs air-dusting every one to three months. The fans need checking. [CraftyCorner]
Thanks for responding in so detail! [indiavani]

The computer is shut down only at 11 p.m. and again on at 5 a.m. in them orning. The computer is used by mywife, myson and myself and hence it is busy during the above said hours. [ssh123]
thanks for your comments. [ssh123]

My computer is always on. I shut him down only once a year (for 14 days) when I am on vacations. I believe it is best for computer to be on all the time. Otherwise hard drive could be broken, it is designed that way. Inside parts of hard drive had to circle. If you shut down computer that circulation is stopped and that is bad for hard drive! hello indiavani, If I have to leave in between for some 1-2 hrs work at home away from the computer I turn off my computer. No one else would be using it so to save on electricity I turned it off. Somehow turning it off for breaks helps to prolong the life of your computer specially if your a heavy user. :-) [eprado]

I am shutting down computer when i am 1-2 hours away from computer. But when for half hour i turn off my monitor and CPU is on. [nkadam]

Yes but once a week maybe!! [JaMaL82]

I shut down my computer from 2 am. until 8am . only.the first thing I do at morning when I stand up from my bed and while crossing the place that my computer is for I go to bathroom for wash my face is open it,doesn't need to say that the last thing I do before I go to bed is shut it down. My husband use to say that if computer can speak will ask little vacation from me lol: [aidonia]

If I leave my computer more than one hour, I would prefer it closed, it will allow the computer proper rest, I think it should be a good life. [xiuluoelly]

I don't ever shut down my computers. I leave them on 24/7 just no sense in shutting them down I may have something I want to do on them in the middle of the night. And I don't want to have to wait for windows to load up and then wait to connect to the internet. I am one that wants it now not when it gets ready to load up. [bwrattybaby]

I only start my computer every evening after finishing my office, by about 6.30pm and goes till 11.00 pm, and after that my EYES WILL SHUT, (lol) irrespective of the fact the computer is on/off. Hence i prefer to shut down my computer..hehehe..by 11.00 pm. [saivenkaat802003]

Hello. No, my PC is running almost the whole day, from 09 am when I wake-up unitll I go to sleep, 24 pm, or something like this. I don't shut down the PC if I'm going somewhere else, I put my status on YM! AFK, I leave a download and I let the computer running. :) [TheGreatMaster]

i always shutdown my computer, as a computer technician i know that its not good to leave the computer on, cause you might comsume the lifespan of some components especially the mainboard and the power supply. do you know that power supply and mainboard's capacitors could easily worn out due to excessive time of usage. well if pc is your life get a higher rated power supply and a lot of ventillation to support your computer. [RUSHER02]

I wake up in the morning and turn my computer on. It stays on all day. Then at night when I go to bed I will shut it down. It too needs to sleep.LOL [TerryZ]

Hi, Iusually turn off my modem but let my pc run. I do try to restart once a day tho when i remember to, ive heard its good for your system. moon [moonbutters]

I'll turn my laptop off completely, even if its just for half an hour. I try to conserve the battery power. [slarkin71]

I personally shut down when I go to sleep, because I'm asleep all night then I go to work for 9 hours and takes 30 mins to drive there and get home, so 10 hours in all. Then I sleep for 8 or 9 hours so that's about 19 hours if I were to just leave it on, unused. But it really depends on the person. Leaving your computer on will reduce the amount of thermal stress that the components experience from heating and cooling, but increases the amount of dust that circulates through your computer and accumulates inside. The dust will clog the heat sinks on your processor and graphics chip, and the fans causing a temperature increase. Dust will also accumulate on other components and reducse their ability to dissipate heat. A clean environment is crucial for a computer that is left on 24/7. Blowing out the dust periodically is necessary. Dust accumulation can conduct electricity and cause crashes and damage to electric components. Turning off your computer helps reduce the wear to moving parts, and saves lots of electricity. Always turn off your monitor. The high voltage ina monitor is a dust magnet. The screen can burn an image if it is constantly displayed. The brightness of the CRT dims as it ages from use. The heat from a CRT increases the load on your air conditionerr and increases its energy consumption. An LCD monitor has a very thin flourescent tube in it that will dim from constant use. It is not cheap to fix. It's your choice. [loolets]

I don't like to leave my computer running for energy purposes and I'm afraid the computer will overheat or something if I leave it on all the time. When I'm at work, whenever I leave for lunch (which is for 1 hour) I will put the computer on sleep or standby and then turn it back on when I come back. I do the same thing when I leave for work. While I'm at home, after I'm done using the computer I will usually put it on standby. When I'm ready for bed, I shut the whole thing down. If I know I won't be home for a long time, I try to shut it down then too. I just try to conserve as much energy as possible, so I don't like to leave it on more than necessary. [SDTermite]

Well before I leave for work I check my mails and close down when I return in the evening its on until I am ready to go to bed. On Saturdays its on for the whole day unless we find interestingthings on the tv to watch. On sundays I ahrdly turn it on. [Sharon38]

i have a laptop. i close the lid. it goes into hibernate... is that considered off?? i guesss.... [yankee112792]

my PC is never turned off! [holtinator]

The only time I ever shut my laptop down is when it starts acting sluggish. Even then I don't completely shut it down. I delete all the cookies and then restart. I like it to be on and ready to use any time I might need it day or night. [moneyandgc]

If I download something I usually turn special program that turn off computer after the time I set it on. Otherwise I shut down the computer myslef. It would be waste of energy and electricity is expencive, too.... [Pompon]

I always shut it off just in case of power surge.I have a power protector for it but you never know. [eachen2002]

If it could be of more than one hour, I would shut the computer down, if the break would only be 15 - 30 minutes, I would not turn the computer down but the computer in the office would last from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon [rouwel23]

most of the time i leave it on, i only shut it if i know im going to stay away for more than 5 hours or so [marisk8]

The only time any of the computers in my house get turned off is during storms/power surges or if its a laptop then if the battery dies. I was told somewhere that turning a computer on and off uses up resources and moves them around causing a higher rate of file fragmentation and the power it requires to boot up and shutdown negates power saving if you just leave your computer on 24/7 and put it in sleep mode when you are not using it. [kennedy838607]

I normally don't shutdown computer if I take 1-2 hours break. However if I'm going out on an appointment for about 5 hours, I would shutdown the computer [daveisdavid]

I shut down my computer after eight hours straight use, be it day or night, I shut it down every eight hours of usage and I don't use my computer during weekends. As much as possible, it's always family time.No work at all.. :) [aj2006]

I do shutdown my computer to save electricity and avoid a high bill but if I will only take a break for an hour or less I tend to set it in an stand by mode. [katkat]

No we never shut down our computer, unless we are going out of town =) I am on the computer so much it would be silly to shut it off. [Michele21]

If I'm going out I would shut if off because I don't want to leave it on when I'm not in the house but if I'm at home and going to take a nap I leave it on, I don't know if that sounds strange but I'm very protective of my laptop so I feel that I need to turn off my computer if I'm going out and if I'm not, I leave it on. [sweetangel88]

I leave my computer 24/7 because your computer is safer from viruses when you have a connection that is on all the time. When you turn your computer on it takes time to load your anti-virus and viruses can get in. I only restart my computer. [StrawberryKisses]

Gosh, my house worst. Our computer open 24/7/365. I wish I could shut down the computer, let it be rest. That computer belong to my sister, she always let the computer opens overnight. I wish explode or something. She didnt even pay the bills. I don't mind if the computer let it open forever for a good purpose. But she's only play games with her's husband, and download some games and movies. When we give the advices about the bills, they simply don't care. And they said we already pay bills for internet. Only that! So I wish that I could shut down the computer. For me I don't mind turn on the computer up to the next day. Anyway, your computer need rest also just like us. So why dont turn it off sometimes. [leha1512]

i had never turned off my computer when i am doing other things. i will turn on favorite musics on my computer. but since i know the price of electricity is too high now in my city, then sometimes i will turn off my computer when i can't use it in 1 hour. now i spend over 10 hours online everyday, 6 hours on mylot and other sites for money and 4 hours for music and movies or cartoons. sometimes i will read a book online, then i will take more time online. [wonderful1]

I invariably shut down my computer, when I am not working, specially at home. I can re-start it, as and when need arises, I think it helps save some electricity. [dpk262006]
