Do You Shut Your Computer Off After Your Done Using It For The Day

Hey everyone. I usually shut my computer off after I'm done using it for the day because there was this one time a few months ago were I decided to leave it on all day and later that same day, I came back to my computer screen and happened to see a strange message over my computers wall paper that said (many people are using this computer)blink it looked like someone was trying to hack in to my computer so I immediately shut it off so after that I always shut my computer off when I'm done for the day just to be safe, and I haven't gotten any more strange message's like that since then, so do you shut your computer off after your done or do you leave it on all night? happy

I turn it off after I finish. The cool thing about my computer though, is that if it's about to get hacked into, it restarts itself so they don't have access to it. Plus, I have a pretty strong firewall, which only allows what I want on it. Also, I turn it off at night because if I don't, then the computer might overheat and then i'd have a huge problem on my hands the next time I tried to use it. When you're using a computer from 2004, you can get a lot of problems from it. [IrishRose23]
It is very safe to use with AVG- I do the same thing. Yeah, just go to Zone Alarm's website. Let me grab the link for you. http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/zonealarm_free_firewall.jsp That link will let you download the firewall! [IrishRose23]

no i don,t i clean it after iam done for the next day and put it on standby i hardly ever turn my computer off.well try to keep good anti-virus on your computer to protect your computer from hackers. [annjilena]

Where I worked as a software support tech we always recommended people shut down their computers at the end of the day. Leaving them on is just asking for trouble. If you are not there to stop things from going wrong because of viruses or hackers you could lose everything on your computer when you have to reformat. So better safe than sorry I say. Shut down and save electricity too. [SketcherD]
Good it is much better for your computer because that way it can shut down each programme correctly. [SketcherD]

yeah we have a strong firewall too so I dont worry about it, but I found out my friend was shutting her computer off "the hard way" I was instructed that shutting your computer off by the button in front is harder on computer than simply turning it off with the start computer shut down option, likely because with the start computer shut down option the software shuts itself off wherareas if you turn it off at the front of the computer it is a power cut off option thus would likely be harder on things inside.... at least thats my guess [LilPixelle]
Hi there. I use to have Norton antivirus I changed to AVG free addition, I still think its best to shut my computer off, and I only shut it off using the automatic shut off option on my computer. thanks for sharing.happy [apples99]

hey apples my computer is always on. i use it to answer the business phone and feel it should be left on. That way i don't miss a call when I'm out of the office and don't have to pay for answering service or voice mail. Plus I check my e-mail pretty often. [redkathy]

I shut mine down for the fact that anything can happen. I have heard of fans going out and then the computer not being cooled down. I know that this is probably rear but I have had fans stop working and had to change them. Just better safe then sorry in that case. I dont worry much about the hacking and viruses thou as I have good protection all the way around. [Ithink]
I agree with you better safe then sorry, you just never know what can happen thanks for responding.happy [apples99]

Sounds like you left your computer connected to the internet. But i normally shut it down when i'm sleeping at night or going out because you don't know what might happen when you are away, what if a fan suddenly stop working and it gives a massage that your fan has stop working and you need to take action about it,where will you be? My suggestion is to shut down your computer when you are not working on it, you are even sving on the electricity bill too [loxion]
Yes that day I closed my web browser and left my computer for a couple of hours then when I came back I seen a weird message that said many people are using this computer if you shut it off they will lose there connection, I'm pretty sure someone was trying to hack in my computer, so now I always shut my computer off. thanks for responding.happy [apples99]

I turn my computer off every night. I do it so that when it needs to it can update whatever it needs to update. Also I conserve energy when I do. [lisa0502]
Yes I think its best to turn your computer off I think you have the right idea, thank-you for responding.happy [apples99]

Well, sometimes I am not putting off or shutting off my computer after using in a day or night but I put it into sleep mode. I have it in kind too that somebody might hack my account hahaha but, how can that be? I remember when I stepped out from my computer while it is on, and I am in the website where I usually visit? I did not log out but when I come back. I was automatically log out and I have to log in again. so, I am not really sure of that notice that you received. [Bebs08]
Well, that day I wasn't on mylot I was just surfing the web, and I just deiced to take a brake from the net for a couple of hours, so I closed my web browser and left my computer, and when I came back to my computer there I see a strange massage that said and I quote, many people are using this computer if you shut your computer off they will lose there data and or connection, I got a strong feeling after I saw that massage that someone was attempting to hack in to my computer and then I immediately shut it off, and ever since that I always shut my computer off. anyway thanks for taking the time to respond.happy [apples99]

i do shut my computer after i am done using it. first it's nice wise to leave it on, when you have no intention of using it.it's a waste of electricity not unless if you have a lot of resources to spare. second, like what you said, other people are trying to take over all your information inside your computer. and third, treat your computer like a human, it needs some rest too, or it might cause operation problems from using it for a long time. [rymebristol]
Your right computers need rest too, thanks for responding. [apples99]

I have never left it on over night unless I am downloading something. I, also, don't leave it on as much as I used to when I am away doing other things for an hour or so because I picked a very bad infection that way even though the browser wasn't on and I was just connected to the Internet as I always am since I have cable. If it looks like something is being downloaded to your computer even though your virus protection says it has blocked it, you should close your browser if you can which is not always possibe in which case turn the power off. Then wait a couple of minutes, turn it on and do a system restore to a day or two before. Lots of times this will prevent problems from whatever was trying to infect your computer. [stealthy]
Thanks for the tip I rarely use system restore, because it might take my computer back and remove something I need but maybe I should consider using system restore if something like what I experienced happens again. [apples99]

i usually turn it off after use to save electricity and for fear of overheating that might cause fire..;o) [donn_juan]
Woe I didnt know that a computer could over heat?blinkhappy [apples99]

I leave it on for the rest of the day but at night before I go to sleep then I will shut it down. I like to hop on the computer now and then and it would get really annoying for me to keep turning it on and then shutting it off. For me it' much easier this way. [pweety_princess]

Hi apples99, When I get ready for bed, I turn off everything. I have always done this. Then when I get up in the morning, after I had made my morning coffee I turn on my computer so I can ready my morning news over a cup of coffee. [snowqueen2008]

I almost always turn the computer off if I don't plan on using it for a while (aka. within the next few hours). I prefer staying safe, being around to see if something malfunctions, so that I have a chance to stop the problem. [cellophane]

I normally shut down the computer after I finish my work, but the computer is password protected. So even if I forget to shut down the computer, it normally goes onto sleep mode and when I or some one try to wake up the computer, it shows the login screen where user credentials have to be given. I do not give much options for others to login to my computer as others do. Thank you for raising the discussion and letting me know your opinion and letting every one know my voice. [ravusri1]

hmmm... it seems that you using public computer. am i right ? sometimes i also using public computer, but i always logout after i finish using it. [iman3004]

If I don't have to use the computer I always switch off at night. I leave it only if I downloading something. There's no need to leave it on for any possible hackers or wasting energy. [overwings]

you need to turn on your firewall i almost never turn off my comp and i never got thees messeges.. in about 2 years you wont need to ask this becouse of the butten that immidiatly turns on your computer... [farjun]

I always shut off my computer, I dont leave it on all night. The cost of electricity in our place is high. Happy mylotting!! [noelcruz]

After using the computer, I always shutdown the computer. It would be a burden if I keep it always turn on. Not only it increase your electric bill but it also decrease the life of the computer. It is advantage also to turn off because it is much safer that way. [emojboy]

I sometimes leave it on all night when I'm doing some torrent downloads which usually takes 6 to 12 hours to finish downloading otherwise I usually turn it off. [cnetboss]

i seldom shut down my computer (laptop),normally it is open 24/7.The speed of my internet get slow when I am downloading that's why I leave my downloading when I'm asleep. [owelm0408]

I always shut down and unplug my laptop before going to sleep. I don't want it to overheat while I'm sleeping because that would be a scary experience. I know it's not going to burn the house down, but I'm not sure about it. So I'd rather be safe than sorry. [mimico]

I will shut my computer off at the end of the day for I found that I was getting weird messages as well. I have a good antivirus and I have a password you have to enter when turning the computer back on that you have to enter in befor you can access the internet. This is a new computer and with the old one that I never shut off and some one got on it with out me knowing and I ended up getting a bad virus. I am very protective with this new one now. [Remembering1996]

i do shut down our computer after using it. usually, it is late at night. doing that will save some electricity. also, some incidents may happen like short-circuits or something. we turn off electric equipments everynight. we just leave some light turned on and also the airconditioning unit. and having said that there are those kinds of things that may happen. i will be more careful and mindful in shutting it off. [maroseqf]

Hello, I do, I have a laptop, some times I auto surf and leave it on over night, but mostly I just shut it off when I'm finished with it. [AcreativeMind]

I switch off the computer everytime I move out. I do not like to keep it on as one never knows who may walk into your computer and hack waht information. [mercuryman3a]

happySure i turn it off. I don't know why i should left open if im don'T use it or go too sleep. During the day i let it on,, if i think i gonna need later in the day. I think not so good to let computer on always,, its increase the performance... And its safe like that,, dont have to care about if if gonna explode loll or fire gonna start because of a overheat hihi. [julie85]

I turn it off after I used it. If however, I will use it again but need to do something first for few hours, I'll just hibernate it for awhile. But it became a habit of mine to turn it off always after using it for the day. That way, it will save electricity as well as I think turn it on for a whole day can broke its system. I think it was quite advisable to turn it off after using it. happy [kylie_quistis]

Hi ya apples99 Yes I always shut my pc down completely when I go to bed of a night. I pull the plug out and everything. You can get problems if you get electric surges while your pc is plugged in as well though this is rare! [Humbug25]

Hmm, that is a weird message. confusedshocked To answer your question, yes, I shut down my computer when I am done with it for the day. Hey, it needs to rest some time! *LOL* [EAStanley]

of course ... if it carrying at on stage .. it will broke my computer .. (computer = laptop) it consume alot of electricity bro or sis .. unless your computer is a server, because turning on computer just for some program that generating money ... it waste of money, either for service your computer, degraded time, and electricity ... is it cover with the money it making ? [dwisasono]

Yeah i always shut it down, save electricity, and securing not getting virus, and get hacked when I'm not there to save my computer. Some years ago, it was sommer and I was playing the whole day just suddenly POOF and it smellet like grilled plastic, my computer was dead :( So now I really take good care of my computer :) [Galima]

Always turn my computer off once i've finished with it as I always worry about it overheating. Have never heard of a circumstance like the one you've experienced. That sounds really worrying would have made me very paranoid to have spotted that on my screen.happy [Metalchick]

I always rurn off my computer as it is a waste of energy leaving it on overnight. I guess it is far safer too, though I had never thought about that till reading your discussion! [creative_genius]

I usually don't. It takes forever for my lap top to boot up. I do restart it atleast once a day to empty the memory. [laglen]

Yes, I shut mine off before I go to bed at night and turn the power plug off. I do it partly because it saves some energy, but I've found if I don't turn it off the files get all messed up and programs freeze up when I try to use them. If I turn it off once a day and let it "put all the files away" I don't have that problem. [thebeaddoodler]

Yes I do shut off my computer after I use it. Otherwise, it will overheat and the electricity bill will rise up. Like what you said, it's also vulnerable to hacking if you don't turn off the computer. So better turn it off to be safe. [amira_milka]

I shut my computer down after I am do for the day. I am not too worried about someone hacking in; however, I shut it down primarily to save on electricity. [lizard211]

I love my computer very much. Because I love it so much I always make sure that it is not overheated. Every time after I am finished doing anything on the computer, I will shut down the computer and shut off the plug too. This can save me a lot on electricity bills, isn't it? Furthermore mine is a laptop and it is very sensitive to heat. The salesperson who sold me the laptop told me to put a fan underneath the laptop so that it would be cool all the time. If not, I have to sit in an air-conditioned room so that no damage would happen when it is overheated. I've heard about the thing you told too. I have a friend who work in an office and she told me the same thing. She said she went out for lunch but she didn't shut down her computer. Later when she came back from lunch she saw something funny on the monitor screen. The words displayed on the monitor screen sounded something like it had been hacked too. So I guess it is important that we never leave our computer unattended. If we want to go out somewhere, always make sure that we shut down the computer so that we do not leave it idle more than it is supposed to be. [ladysurvivor]

No, I actullay put my computer on stand by. When you have to cut your computer on and of all the time it uses up alot of electricity current. So putting it on stand by do not use up alot of electicity current. [MizzLadyB08]

Of course I turn it off when it is not in use. The cost of electricity is high and of course we need to save up. Leaving it open the whole day wastes a lot of electricity. Also I really don't worry about turning it off because I could still receive e-mails and stuff even after I have turned off the computer. happy [magojordan]

i barely shut off my computer.because i need to run some processes as a server to the clients. [midautumn]

I usually sleep it over and the time i leave for work, that's the time i shut it down. I turn on my computer to read before i go to sleep or just watch a movie to make me sleepy then leave it while im sleeping. i usually use my PC at day time becuse i'm woking night time.. [thaMARKER]

Since I got a new desktop PC for the living room (actually my mom did), I decided to give it some pre-shutdown cleaning. So before I even shut the PC down, I always go to two freeware programs for cleaning it. First, I go to Disk Cleaner, wait until it loads up, and then press the "Clean" button letting it do it's work in deleting the files from the Temporary Internet Files, the Recycle Bin, etc. Then I go to Auslogics Disk Defrag, choose the hard drives I want to defrag, and then press "Next" to let it defrag the selected drive. When it's finished, I select another drive and repeat the same steps. When all cleaning is done, THEN I shutdown the computer, shutdown the hard drives and leave the room. It's actually multiple steps that I have to do in order to keep the PC in top working condition. [DuoMaxwell]

yes i always turned my computer off when im done using it. for those who keep it open, be sure to put a password on it so that no one can harm your data. and time after time , update your anti-virus and scan your computer. [markmoney]

I will go mainly for downloading movie or software because as I got unlimited downwards from broadband so I am not leaving it so I'm going for downloads and make use of downloads. [nareshreddy68]
