I have been working with computers since 97. I wasn't confident playing with my machine let alone try repairing it, when it got some problem. But, I figured that if I always depend on others, I'll not have close relationship with my machine and will be wasting a lot of my money that can otherwise be saved.
So, in short, I started dealing with 'soft' problems (software problems) and then with 'hard' (hardware) ones too. I am not an expert though, in any of two, but I do have intermediate working knowledge. Now when I look back, I feel satisfied about how much I saved just by learning to deal with the problems.
My Question(s): Do you try to deal with your PC's problems yourself or always look for a technician to fix it for you? Have you ever saved your lot? How did you feel about both, the experience and the saving?

responses and comments:
yes I have the same knowledge about computer hardware is the letters by whenever there is a problem with my computer which is harder related at first I give it a try. And as then I feel that he is the problem which has occurred raised out of my reach then I go to any person who can repair it. This is the reason why even when three of my friends and relatives have problem with their computer they also call me for help and I am very glad to do that. Frank is picking in today's world it is very important that you have some basic knowledge about computer hardware is so that you can let their small problems. I have seen a lot of times that is people call engineers for even small problems like misplacement of RAM or in a loose wires and for that they had to pay at least a hundred bucks. Which is not at all a good thing according to meet. Every single cent you earn is harder and money and so you should never give it away easily. [amitavroy]
Hello amitavroy! You seem to have pretty good working knowledge of computers which is really appreciated. It's a shame and a burden on pocket that people can't do even the basic things. Gee! I have a friend, his nephew, nearly 8 years old, can replace RAM, can change jumper settings, screw and unscrew discs etc. It's good that your relatives and friends can seek your help, especially when it's free of cost!:-) Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
i usually deal with problems that are software based as iam more interested in software than hardware. I rarely deal with hardware as if anything goes wrong with the hardware then the comp is doomed whereas in software if something goes wrong there is always a choice of reinstalling. [anshnav]
i am also interested in software.when I started to use a new software,I always try by myself without anyone's help.my college student always ask me for help on computer problems.i sometimes read computer magezines to increase my computer knowlege. But i think it is boreing when computer do not work,it may influence your work and study. So i incline to save immediately after installing ,then when problems come,it is easy to solve. [hhw521]
Yes, to answer your question, I do deal with my own PC's problems... And most of the time, its hardware problems that I faced and I have to replace the parts to ensure the PC works again like before... It is always frustrating when a PC fail to operate smoothly and too much time is wasted to find out what's wrong with it [chunter]
Hello chunter, It's good that you are able to deal with your machine's problems! Yes, it is frustrating to a PC fail to operate smoothly but it's also pleasant to see when it is fixed especially when we have done it ourselves, isn't it? Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I used to be like you were, Kamran. If it is spoiled, I will just pass it on to someone else who is good at this repairing business. Nowadays, I solve all the software issues myself. And very strangely, now that I am am, my computer never seems to be bogged by problems I used to have. As for hardware, I am quite limited on it but at least I know how to clean the fans now LOL.:P And I agree - it is indeed gratifying - it's like, hey, I fixed the computer myself MYSELF! :) [lordwarwizard]
Haha, an interesting way of putting it.:) [lordwarwizard]
Initially i always used to call in for services to tackle any problem in my computer, infact i had an annual contract for the same but slowly i tried to tackle problems on my own and soon i was able to set software problems in order and i then started downloading programs from download.com to tackle problems and would read the discussion forum too. This helped me a lot and now i manage most of the problems unless i need to add something new like a server which is not possible at my end as this needs specialized software. I have done some work on hardware too. [limcyjain]
Hello limcyjain, We all learn slowly but if there's a commitment to that effect, which you seem to be rich in. It's good to know that now you can handle most of 'soft' problems and can deal some hardware problems too. By going to forums, downloading programs for yourself and trying to troubleshoot, you have a perfect way to climb the ladder! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I think I kinda sound like you!!! I have now taken several OLD computers that were not working and revamped them and made a old slow computer for my kids! We can't afford a newer one.. so they are happy with the dinasour. We are still running windows 98se and I am scared to upgrade since I know so much anymore about my two computers~! [KKKBsmom]
Hello KKKBsmom, It is admirable that you were able to use pieces from non-functioning computers to make a working machine. As long as the job is done, it doesn't matter what operating system one is using! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I try to deal with my PC problems. I rarely call a PC technician. Why would I call a PC Technician to fix my computer, when I have a wonderful guide that can help me fix it on my own called the Internet. It is a waste of money to me calling PC Technicians because even if it was a simple error, they will still charge you fully. There is no point in that. Before I call a PC technician (which I haven't in the past nine years), I will make sure I have exhausted all my options or possibilities. I would at least try to fix it. Besides, most of the time, when I get a computer problem and I fix it on my own, I learn something new. The more knowledge I have about computers means the less I have to pay in PC technician's pockets. [superjockh]
Hello superjockh, Welcome to mylot, I hope you would be enjoying your experience here!:-) You have a good point about wonderful guide called internet. There is a lot of info available for free now and it's shame that if someone can't use it. I'll also be inclined to call a technician only and only after I have exhausted all my options and tries to fix the problem. I didn't have to do it in ages though. I have also observed that when someone develops a working understanding of these machines, one seems to have less problems, probably one is unconsciously keeping things in order or maybe doesn't pay attention as problems get resolved easily. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
You say you have been working with computers since 1997, thats a long time. I've only started in 2000 but i'm still a teenager. About the topic, yes i do try to fix my computer sometimes it dosen't break down allot. However my last computer broke down and i had to buy a new one since it would no longer work....its a good the thing it was insurred so i got a new free but since the new one was better i had to pay extra. I do like repairing my computer when it breaks down becuase it increase my knowledge on computers and things to do with the computers. [SkyHero]
Hello SkyHero, Welcome to mylot, I am glad with the fact that you made your debut here, I hope you will enjoy your stay here!:-) You are very right, experimenting is what makes us learn more and gain knowledge of the things important or working for us. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
For me, I am very experience with the software part of computers and knowledgeable about the hardware part too. When it comes to fixing my computer, I usually do it myself and am very successful at it. I think this saves time and money since I dont have to wait for a technician and I dont have to pay them either. It also enhances my knowledge about computers which will help me in the future if I run into that problem again, I will know how to fix it already. [nickp10]
Hello nickp10, Welcome to mylot, I hope you will enjoy your time and stay here!:-) Right you are, that it not only saves money but also the time especially if it's weekend or a time when you can't get someone as early as you like. Hands-on-experience does save future time too as we have already figured something out for the problem! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
i've been working with computer since i was 2nd year high school(1993) and its was 286 to 386 model back then lols ^_^. i had a lot of experience in computer but i still consider my self as an advance user not an expert because computer evolution is still growing fast and there is still a lot to learn about. So far i been watching how computer hardware getting better and better, faster and faster. And for software, ive been moving from DOS to Windows to LINUX(i think i'll longer in this OS ^_^). [merjun]
no problem ^_^ [merjun]
My husband knows how to repair computers and if either one of us has a problem with our computer, he'll be the one to solve the problem be it a software problem, a hardware problem, or just teaching me something I don't know yet, about computers. He enjoys doing it. [danishcanadian]
Hello danishcanadian, It must be great to have someone at your side who could look to computer problems, good for you! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
surely depends from the problem you are talking about..so in my case if there are problems due to software generally i will repair them by myself and so normally i try the case and my computer ran as before the problems..so repair it!! if there are hardware problems depends..but even in this case before come to a technician and fixe the problem i will see which kind of poblems and so on..surely if i will need some components because i need to change some for my computer i will be obliged come to a technician to take them or in a specialized shop to take that one i need to solve problems due to hardware components!!but normally i don't come as usual to a technician also because normally i was careful about machine so i haven't so often problems or hard situation that need technician as well! [tonyllenium]
Hello tonyllenium, You are right, it depends. Software problems are always easy to deal with, after all nothing is damaged actually and you always can format and start from scratch. Hardware problems, as you say, may require component changes and of course, one then will have to go search them. even if it isn't component change, some problems can't be handled as we may not be experts. So, again one needs a technician. Like you, I haven't had to take help from technician as such after some time! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
i'd love to be able to fix my pc by myself, since september i have spent 220euros and its still not right.every timei bring it to fix something it comes back with 2 or 3 other things that are not right.the last time i brought it to the technician where i bought the pc he fixed the audio(that he had previously instlled wrong)but i can't use internet exp anymore it just won't start, the pc finds and downloads windows updates(its an original copy of xp)but it won't install them and when i put a dvd in the unit it says insert dvd.it had none of these problems when i brought it to fix the audio.any ideas on resolving my problems?????????don't tell me to change technician because i know i have to do so but i've been told that xp will have to be reinstalled hence i'll loose evertyhing for the third time.so i'm hanging on as long as i can before loosing all again. [suzanne1970]
Hello suzanne1970, Welcome to mylot, I hope you would be enjoying your surfing and participation here!:-) You don't need to lose everything; actually you don't need to lose anything. But, do tell me, do you have partitions in your computer? If so, you can copy and paste all your important data into secondary disc drive and then format the primary and reinstall XP. This way you won't be losing any of your important data. If, however, you don't have partitions i.e. you have only one working drive, then do you have any extra external hard disc or writeable CDs, DVDs? If so, then again, there is no problem. You can transfer data onto any of these devices and can reinstall XP without problem and take your data back afterwards. If your personal data does not take much space then you can use Flash (Pen) disc to shift this data and then reinstall XP. If nothing of this sort is possible then you can use online storage services, like Google offers adequate data storage facility. Bottom line is, you transfer your important data to any retrievable place, reinstall your XP and take your data back! Can it help? If not, please be more elaborate, we may see to it together! Thanks for responding!:-) [kamran12]
I have been doing my own software problems. Like if i get a virus i try to get rid of it and fix my own problems. I do ask around on what to do , pcpitstop is a great place to go. They will help you with your problems. I did recently start doing my own hardware problems , which i'm glad i have yet to have one. I have been figuring out what is what and how things work. About 6 months ago , i wouldn't even open up my computer , i knew nothing about the insides of a computer. Now i know a lot , but not as much as i want to know. I did recently take my computer to get fixed , i tried everything i could to stop my computer from crashing. I even asked around , tried a bunch of tests for a few months. Still couldn't get it fixed. I was going to try and re install windows , but i killed my windows xp cd. Then i gave up and just let them deal with it because i didn't know what the problem was. I though it was either a Ram , Motherboard or windows problem. They found out it was windows corrupt. So they reinstalled windows , kept my files and everything. I'm happy and it didn't cost much. [bikespot]
Hello bikespot, I feel really good that internet has provided us all with chance to look to our problems on our own, that's surely a great help. When I started doing it back in 90s, I wasn't into internet really and I guess resources were not as much as they are today! It's always good to have healthy amount of curiosity that you seem to have such that you are making yourself educated about hardware before the problem strikes. Experiences are always educating and I am glad that you have the right tone to take the experience as it should be taken! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
yes if our computer has a virus then i get rid of kasperksky which i downloaded from the internet... [bmodina]
Hello bmodina, It's good that internet has been helpful in solving your problem. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
Well I always have a go first, can not help that because if it is something minor then why not. I mean if I think I can tackle it then why would I was some one else time and my money right? Sometimes it is something small and that can be easily figured out with some help from a manual or something. I like being able to fix some of the problems I encounter by myself, it kind of makes me feel like I really achieved something. Yes but if the problem is beyond me then of course I would call a technician to fix the problem or if it is really bad and not worth fixing, then maybe I would start saving for another computer but that is the most extreme situation. [bluemars]
Hello bluemars, If we haven't seen each other before, I would like to first welcome here on mylot and would wish that you have your stay most enjoyable here!:-) Yes, it would be the most wise, at least for pocket and mind, to try to deal with the problem by oneself before seeking help unless it is something one has no knowledge about. And, it sure is satisfying giving a sense of achievement, isn't it? Crashing of machine is frustrating, indeed! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I always fix my own PC. I have alot of weird errors. So i just REIMAGE Done fully installed and personalized to my liking :-) [tbourke45]
Hello tbourke45, Welcome to mylot and I hope you would be enjoying discussions here!:-) I am glad that you can always fix your PC, thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I like playing computer very much .when i was a child my father had bought a computer for my birthday present then i played computer day and night soon computer couldn't work no way but repaired it myself with some help in computer book .know I study this subject in college i found much among reparing computer [cn_dwc]
Hello cn_dwc, Welcome to mylot, I hope your stay would be one of most enjoyment and pleasure on here!:-) It's admirable that you were able to fix your machine just from computer book even when you were child! And now, you are into this field itself. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
In the past I didn't know how to repair software problems for computer. Since my computer was down and couldn't work so frequently in the past, so later I learned how to format the drivers, install operating system and other softwares for the computer. So you can see having the problems won't be a bad thing all the time. At least I can learn something from it and it's beneficial for my whole life. Today, if there is nothing wrong with the hardware, usually I can fix the computer by myself. [youless]
Hello youless, my friend!:-) It would seem that you have already learnt many things. I did go through the same learning procedure myself and it's always rewarding, isn't it? You are very right, problems aren't always bad, rather, if we look at them more positively, they are often helpful in making us learn more and more and help us cope with them easily in future, as you say! Your level of confidence is very telling in itself that you have really mastered software issues and I am happy for you! Thanks for sharing, youless!:-) [kamran12]
I have no idea about how to repair computers. When there is something wrong with my computer, I usually call professional IT expert to get it repaired. My boyfriend has a little knowledge about it but is not an expert. [yannycui]
Hello yannycui, I am not an expert either. We learn from experences and as life goes, so I would like to think that you will be learning great many things. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I grew up before people had many computer and did not have one myself until after my husband died. then my son and I teamed up and I became the owner of a computer which I learned to use but I let the nuts and bolts problems go to my computer nerd genius son who is a computer programmer anyway. He loves to solve computer problems and has saved me tons of money by fixing problems himself. so I am really spoiled. but my son does this for a living so why not turn to the pro. [Hatley]
Hello Hatley, I am really sorry for your husband. It comforts to have someone close who can look into problems and yes, you are right that when it's his profession, why not benefit!? Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I do Kamran, of course you know that I now work in a computer repair shop for a good friend of mine right? I do virus malware clean ups, software resolutions and I can now put together a pretty mean desktop. It was not always so however. I got my first computer in 1998, I knew nothing about them what so ever. I did alot of typing in nursing school but that was on an old sears typewriter. Like you I could not afford techs, so I had to teach myself everything including how to use windows, and microsoft office. I bought the dummy books used from the campus book store and like everything else in my life I dug in. I truly enjoyed the challenge. [Angelwhispers]
You may not believe it Angel, but the first time I interacted with you, my impression was that you either are a teacher or a medical professional. I got 50% of the probability right!:-) But man I enjoy computers and what makes them compute.. What else a computer would need to compute other than a caring Angelic hand!?:-) [kamran12]
I have never had to repair my computer in the sense of say the monitor, keyboard, or anything like that. But whenever something on-screen goes awry, I become a fumbler. I will fumble around until I fix it, or until I am threatening to throw the stupid piece of crap out the window,LOL. At this point, I will ask a friend to help me. If I can not find anyone to help me, then and only then will I call a tech. I hate tech support with a passion. For one thing, they make me realize just how much I do not know. Besides, if I fumble, I am more likely to remember it the next time. [Rozie37]
I think I feel the same, Rozie37, that's probably why I like to know myself before I have to feel embarrassed again!:-) [kamran12]
Yes i like to repair ir myself and i have been doing it over years say five or six or even more than that... [maathav]
Good for you, maathav, thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I am not one of those techies who buy all the parts of a computer and put the whole system up from the ground. I usually buy an assembled system from the shop. But having used two PCs in my home for more than 10 years now, I have come across many problems that can happen to the machine, whether it is hardware-related, OS or application-related. If I had to call in a serviceman each time I hit a problem, I would either have spent a whole lot of money for diagnosis and repair, or I would have been crippled umpteen times (in not having the problem PC to use until it is rectified). Knowing something about PC and how it works is really essential and very worthwhile. I've picked up this knowledge over the years tickering with my previous PCs. I was also in the IT line, so I have friends who can also advise me when I needed help. That is really a big advantage. Many times, I get application problems, OS issues or harddisks that won't read or have difficulty reading after some usage, and I have to get another harddisk and reinstall the whole system. Recently, my PC wouldn't boot, and I realised that the cooling fan was not working very well causing the CPU to shut down quickly, so I just went to the shop to buy a replacement fan and installed it myself. Other times, some peripheral will stop working well and I have to reinstall the driver again. There are many other things that can go wrong with a PC. Knowing how to do simple diagnosis and fixing your own problems really help one to get the PC up and running much quicker than waiting for external help. One of the things I never like doing is to bring my PC to the shop for repair. I never like the idea of leaving my PC with a repairman who may just copy my data and confidential information without me knowing. I am very wary about this breach of privacy to my data. So in this regard, I force myself to learn how to fix problems on my own especially those that are linked to fixing the hard-disk, or if I need to upgrade my system. In all my years of using PC, I have only brought my PC to the shop twice, once when the power supply unit failed and the other when the mother board had a problem. I have also helped several of my friends resolve their PC problems. They really appreciate me lending them a hand and giving them advice, because calling the agent to do those things would have cost them a bundle. [lexus54]
You are most welcome, lexus54!:-) You are right abut internet helping us solve our problems ourselves! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
i guess it is more about curiosity than saving money for repair. i am like you who would like to tinker and solve the problems by myself and ended up spending more because of some troubleshooting mistakes or the parts are more expensive. if i can't seem to solve the problem then that is the time i go for the doctor to heal my virtual friend. [tigerdragon]
Hello tigerdragon, You have interesting point there about curiosity, it certainly has it's fair share in motivating us do things for ourselves! It would be wise to finally call someone when we are not able to deal rightly! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
Hi kamran, My husband is genius for that sort of thing, so I never have a need to learn about maintaining our computer. I know some basic things regarding software problems, but he is in charge mostly.:) My husband is always talking to a computer, things like:" what are you doing to me?", or "I know you have some problems, we will fix that in a second". He is not crazy by the way, it is just his approach.:) [Natrak]
Hello Natrak, How good it is to have someone deal with the problems but it's always good to have one's hands on the job too, isn't it? LOL! my professor talks to computer a lot, really a lot. He use to curse them, ask questions and all sorts of things and it's real fun being with him when he is working on a code or computer!:-) Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
Yeah... i always look for a technician and programmer. All i know about my pc is "to use" them. few years ago, i tried to repair my printer, and it became "not a printer" but only letter "p"... i cant use it anymore, i all just can do with it... just "T"... throw... So because of that bad experience, i never to repair something that really complicated (even its seems not). Computer and its hardware are really sensitive, so i prefer to send it to the right person. [manya_pearl]
Hello manya_pearl, Just 'using' is also a lot fun, isn't it? Hmmm...I can see how damaging a printer would have deterred you in your future endeavors with PC repairs but I'll tell you that everyone does mistakes, it's from them that we learn the most. So, don't hesitate to mistake, at least with software issues because at the end, nothing will be damaged seriously! It's a right thing to do to send one's system to right person when situation calls for it! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
Yes, I always look after my computer myself. A computer can be quite an expensive item, so if you add the high cost of repairs by a third party it would be a formidable amount of money. Hardware problems are not very common nowadays, so the majority of hardware incidents that I have dealt with were to upgrade the system by adding extra RAM or replacing the sound card or video card etcetera. Nevertheless, there have been a few times when hardware has failed or developed a fault and I have had to change the Power Supply, Floppy Drive and my DVD Writer over the past couple of years. Software problems are much easier to deal with because if the system becomes very unstable I simply reformat and reinstall everything. keeping a decent recent backup can make this an even simpler process. [Asylum]
Hello Asylum, I am glad to learn that you are the primary are giver of your computer. It certainly cost a lot to let a third party deal. You are right that mostly one has to only, and often, deal with only the software problems. Yet, you have had a decent experience with hardware too, it's admirable!:-) Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
The same with me. Recently,I bought a new one ,within 30 days ,I have asked other one to repair it twice.I often want to learn how to deal with the problem,I think it is difficult for a girl to do this job.aslo,I spent much of money of it. Maybe we can discuss this problem together. [jesiear]
Hello jesiear, Welcome to mylot, I do hope that you would be enjoying getting settled with the site and participating in discussions!:-) Yes, they are very expensive and adding repair cost is frustrating. I don't think it's any difficult a job for girls, girls are as much capable as boys in this field. One user who is a good friend of mine has shared her comment here and she can probably do better than many boys! If, you have problems, feel free to ask. I'll be glad of any help to you, if I could! Thanks for your comment!:-) [kamran12]
I usually try myself to solve the problem. Then my husband comes for help. Two times we removed trojan Horses and viruses. But sometimes we are stuck. For example I used AVG anti virus and registry cleaning and the trojans are gone. But you know what, the control panel also has gone. If I try to install through search etc. it says consult system administrator. I went to google search also but not able to get my control panel back. Our knowledge is very very limited. So right now I am stuck up with control panel. Can you help me? [Buchi_bulla]
Hello Buchi_bulla, It's so good to see you! I hope your family is doing fine!?:-) I am glad that you try to look to the problems yourself!:-) As to your problem, it's not a big deal. just reinstall windows (or whatever operating system you are using). You don't need to format your disc or do anything else. There are two options in Windows installation CD, Repair and Reinstall, both can work. just put in your installation CD and run it. Your problem will be solved automatically!:-) If it doesn't help, feel free to ask! Thanks for your comment here!:-) [kamran12]
Hi Kamran, Its same with me too. As it is, my work at office revolves around computer so I just cant sit idle if the machine has conked and the servicing people are taking time to come. Previously I used to just sit and wait for them to come and the work would pile up and I would be delayed unnecessarily. So gradually I started picking up tips from the engineers and in their absence, I tried to apply my knowledge and most of the time it worked. Whenever I got stuck, I could always seek assistance over the phone. Then when I got a computer at home, I started picking up more problem-solving skills and now I am an 'expert' in the eyes of my son hahahha. I don't intend to study the detailed circuit or the programmes, but I believe all of us must learn some basis problem-solving skills in whatever we do, something like what you are taught in the driving classes. [sudiptacallingu]
Hello sudiptacallingu, You are lucky that you are allowed to deal with your system at office. The place where I worked didn't allow us to handle things ourselves. Only qualified staff were allowed to do it but then they were always very quick! I am glad that you have gradually mastered things, must have been a refreshing experience for you! And, you are right that we should at least have some basic knowledge. over dependency kills, doesn't it? Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
i have been looking at internet explore all morning right now i'm using it but without componenti aggiuntivi which i presume are add ons in english.i have looked and all the add ons are attivated, but when i open a page a message comes up telling me that all add ons are dissativated,so i go to srtrumenti to attivate the add ons but the add on line is not in dark black, its in grey as if its not on the pc hence i cant clic onit and open it.when i go on the micro soft update page it tells me i have ti instal an active x but i haven't the option to do this as in the line where the active x should be it has written internet explorere running with add ons disattivated.have you understood any of my rambling??i'm not very good with pcs and even worse at trying to explain what is wrong.have you any ideas? [suzanne1970]
excuse my ignorance but what does partitioned mean [suzanne1970]
I like to try troubleshooting my own computer and my dad's but if my work fails, then i usually send my boyfriend on the job! He's a lot better than me, but I would still consider myself an "above average" user, you could say. :) I have helped built my computer and my boyfriend's and I'm currently in the market for buying new parts. It's awesome to get the work done yourself, cause some people charge a lot!! My dad used to have a guy to repair his computers, but it would upset me because I knew he was getting ripped off, especially when the guy offered to buy parts for him to replace. I knew he was charging way too much, but unfortunately my dad wouldn't listen to me. ;( It's awesome to be able to troubleshoot your own stuff though. [angelkitten]
Hello angelkitten, Welcome to mylot, I hope that you will enjoy your time here!:-) You seem to be pretty good at least in basics of computers and then you have another person to help you more. I would second you in that it is indeed a satisfying experience to deal with our problems ourselves. I am sorry for your father's losses. One of my friends was like this too. He wouldn't trust us and would always go to repair center even if it was about reinstalling operating system. It cost him a lot but thankfully he finally learned the lesson the hard way. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I do so too and currently my cd drive is giving me problems and I have tried everything form driver update and cd test whatever but I think its gone now. Do you have any tips I could try to see whats wrong with it? [mansha]
Hello mansha, Is the driver right for the drive? how does CD test come out? If the driver is fine but CD test is not or even if it is fine, there may be dust or particles on CD Drive-Lens. Try to use some CD-Drive lens cleaner (available in form of CD's, either wet or dry, get anyone you can). There can also be a problem of lose connection of data cable with CD drive. Try to open the case, and check if Data cable is connected properly and right in place i.e. tightly with the drive. If data cable is also plugged fine and it still doesn't do any good, then it may be the time to change your drive. Bt, try yourself first, there may be one of the two things with it that I have described above! Best of luck! and thanks for sharing and asking!:-) [kamran12]
I never try to fix any computer because my boyfriend does it. I did however fix my digital camera. I have one of the first digital cameras Nikon from 1998.It was very expensive, hard to believe over $900. In 2002 my camera failed to start. I learned that repair will cost more than new camera. I took it apart and tided all back. It was working OK for additional year. Now is working only as a picture view. I am thinking to take apart and see what happen. It has only 4mp, now not much useful anyway, but clarity of picture is still good... [polachicago]
Hello polachicago, my friend!:-) It good to have someone in the right time, isn't it!? But, maybe yu can learn a thing or two yourself, at least about basics! know it befoe it's too late, I mean what will you do if, for any reason, you partner has gone to another city and in his absence there is a problem!? LOL, just motivating you!:-) It's still good that you successfully made your expensive Camera work for yourself. I am happy for you! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I went to business school and got my A+ certification in hardware and software. So i know a little bit about computers, i put my own together, and i upgrade it when it needs to be upgraded and fixed. I am much better with the hardware, i hate doing software problems, it takes to dang long to sit and watch stuff install and blagh. OK if i was getting paid to watch the isntall bar move then that'd be another story lol. Before i went to school for computers though i was playing around with my own machine, which my mom would cringe everytime she seen me going with a screwdriver to open up the case. lol it was a 486 which they bought for a few grand back then. lol. I had a friend who taught me some basic's but other then that i learned on my own from poking around in the bios and in the box its self. I think a lot of people learn that way ;) [Sissygrl]
Thanks kamran ;) Hope you have a good day :) [Sissygrl]
I get static electricity so I leave the major repairs to my older son who is the computer expert. I will remove any bad software, and format the computer, and back things up on a Cd if I need to. So I will do things that do not require that I open up the machine, like plugging things in the right way, adding perephials, but things such as opening up the computer and inserting another hard drive, cd player, or graphic cards, or diving the drive so the basic software goes a certain place, I will leave to my son. He is the expert and I do not want to out short the computer by touching the wrong thing. [suspenseful]
Hello suspenseful, You may not touch hardware, but you already do a lot, that is already much more than what average people can do!:-) So, the problems are basically resolved within house, that's what is important and interesting! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I built my first (hobby!) computer 31 years ago, even had to solder the components (resistors, caps, connectors and transistors!) onto the motherboard. I build all my own computers and fix everything, software and hardware related. In fact all my friends, acquaintances and family come to me with all the computer problems they can't take care of themselves. So, I don't 'try', I DO fix all things myself. I have found that if I have problems that are tough to handle, there is no one I know that knows more. Thus, I either fix them or am stuck with the problem. Using another computer often yields a solution. I have 4. Just getting ready to build a quad core. All my present ones are single core CPU machines. [IddiKlu]
Hello IddiKlu, First off, I appreacite your responding here. Though anyone with less than 100 posts is usually first welcomed by me but I have seen you, ever since I am here and I am here for around a year now! So, I truly admire your steady ways when it comes to communications!:-) And, how wonderful a person you are, building and raisng your own machines and having no one better than you!! That must take some original intelligence and talents, I admire that too!:-) I have no other comments to offer other than these humble words, thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
This is good idea. We should learn to repair the computer by our own efforts. But some time the case becomes as series as we rush to the experts. self repairing is like self medication in case of health problems. But we should gain as much confidence as we should rectify the problem. But we should never forget the need and importance of experts. [sheenshaukat]
Hello sheenshaukat, You have an interesting example to share that is self medication in case of health. I don't know, however, howmuch it relates to computers and trying to repair it oneself. But, you are very right that need and importance of experts can never be forgotten! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I guess I am lucky enough because I never encountered to have a problem with my Pc and if I have it is my Husband whop will fixed it everytime through Hardware and even software he handled it.... [cherylal]
Hello cherylal, How wonderful it is to not have a problem in first place and even if it occures, there is someone to depend on! I would like to believe that you also are not giving away your own needs to learn each day!:-) Thank you for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
It is very good question. As i am system engineer i really like to repair my computer my self, not with the help of others. But the interesting is i only always create issues on my PC after that try to solve / repair my system :-) Thanks for your time [shunnathan]
Hi, Thanks very much for your comments. Bye and take care. [shunnathan]
i have some very little technical idea about how the computer works but i never try to do any major repair work on my system i am too careful to do that besides i have a junior brother on hand who is an expert at such things why should i bother myself about doing repair works when an expert is just around the corner [BYOLA2871]
You are welcome BYOLA2871! And, that was an honest appreciation; I see many (offline) who aren't able to do even that much, really! [kamran12]
I do initial troubleshooting and some maintenance check for both hardware and software. I was actually trained by my previous employer since our IT guys were all based in the head office and they are spread too thin countrywide. It would also make it more cost effective if they train one employee from each branch to do troubleshooting and basic installations. It did save my company and my current employer some money because I can do some work on computers. I can also handle basic LAN networking and troubleshooting. As to computer at home, I leave it to my sister who is a software developer to handle everything. As to hardware, my husband could also handle it being a I.T professional himself. [cdparazo]
Hello cdparazo!:-) I believe your company must have saved a lot by training you given the amount of work and problems occuring at workplace! You kind of seem to have a 'computer family':-) I am glad that yourself and people in your family can handle your own problems! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I don't try to fix my PC on my own. I'm too scared that it may end up being more broken than it already is if I tinkered around with it. I would rather spend and leave the fixing to real technician who knows his away around PCs. [plainhousewife]
Hello plainhousewife, Welcome to mylot, I hope you will enjoy your stay here!:-) It is wise of you to leave fixing to a person who is qualified to do the job when you are really scared of ending up with it more broken. Do you try to see what technician does with the PC while he/she is fixing it? It may help you in trying for yourself in future! what do you think? Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
hi kamran! ^__^ i get problems with my computer once in a while. if its just a simple problem, i would try to fix it. like, a program wouldn't run or some files keep hanging up. but if its something like my monitor wouldn't start or the cpu wouldn't boot, i would take it to a technician because i don't really know anything about computers, even softwares or anything as big as that, so i can't really do anything except to bring it to a technician. sometimes i'm wishing that i had studied computers, everything about it even programming, because its really a hassle when my computer breaks down and i have to take it to a technician to repair it. not only is it a hassle and consumes a lot of time and energy but yes, it is also a burden to my pocket. but i can't really do anything about it because i don't have the patience to learn everything about fixing and stuffs. so i just take the best of care of my computer to prevent it from having problems. ^__^ [secretbear]
There you have a perfect recipe for learning even those things that don't interest you at all! It is admirable!:-) [kamran12]
I wouldn't even attempt to repair either of our computers. My husband on the other hand can build or repair a computer(software or hardware). We have never had to call a technician or anything like that because he is so good with computers. I love computers and would love to be able to fix them, but II am just not very good at them. [cortney09]
Hello cortney09, How good it feels to have someone that can fix things up. I hope you will learn by time just by seeing how he does what he does! Best of luck and Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I am able to try or repair my computer myself as i am doing a computer course and also i have a good friend circle of these technicians problem, anytime if need some help i ask to my friends. [mnsrwt123]
Hello mnsrwt123, Welcome to mylot. I hope your stay here will be enjoyable!:-) You seem to be fortunate to have everything to get rid of your computer related problems, education, skill and friends! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I always love to repair my computer myself. I do have some basic knowledge. But im not an expert. I have some of my friends how know lots about the comp. I keep learning things from them! In case i feel that i cannot fix a problem, then i take my friend's help. My friends knows lot about computers :) [rashmigs]
Hello rashmigs, You appear to be pragmatic when you translate your knowledge into practice. I respect that you don't stop to learn more and more and seek help where it is needed. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I don't trust myself with any hardware, but I have troubleshot software problems.... Good for you-- I applaud you!! [fec139]
Hello fec139, Troubleshooting software problems is a promising first step towards achieving higher skills. You have embarked upon a positive curve and I hope you will never stop to learn! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I always try to see if I could fix the problem first now that I have some slight idea on what to do when it comes to problems with computers. Before, I use to bring the whole CPU at the house of someone whom my friend referred me to. I simply looked at how he did the maintenance and from there, I simply tried it myself when our new computer was bought. Now I am the one who always tries to fix problems when it comes to computers. Only customer-easy software problems though. Not the deep technical stuff. Now, I am trying to see if I could fix the video card of our previos one by replacing the exhaust fan. Look back, I simply could say that I'm impressed of what I was able to do as well as the money that I could set aside lol [ratyz5]
Your quite welcome happy [ratyz5]
I had a friend who would help me fix my computer, but I don't just let him fix it, I learn from him. Now, when I run into any problems, I am confident enough to figure out the problem and fix it if it can be helped. I would say that I have saved a lot of money just by knowing how a computer works. I don't have to deal with a technician that would ask for a very high unreasonable payment because he just "looked at" my computer and say that I need to replace something. My dad is into electronics, he can repair any home appliance, but I am proud of myself because the computer is the only thing he cannot mess with :D [onewickedsoul]
friends can be vital in situations like this blessed be [ESKARENA1]
Yes, I do repair my computer, both hardware and software, and I quite enjoy it ;) When I was younger, I was asking a lot of questions to my uncle, who is a computer expert, and he taught me many things. After I grew older and I got an Internet connection, I surfed different web sites and forums to ask questions. As for the money, I can't say I saved much, because, back in the day, my uncle was repairing my computer for free, the only thing I saved was time, because he is a very busy man, so if I got my computer to him, I had to call him every day to remind him and ask him about my PC's health :P , but now I fix the PC myself ;) [zozeman]
Hello zozeman, Welcome to mylot land, I hope you will enjoy your visits here!:-) Given your inquisitive nature and longing for learning, it's not surprising that you are adept at dealing with your system's troubling issues. time can be more valuable than money, sometimes! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I by my firs computer in 2005. then I know little about that. My friend who know more install me a program and when I have a first problem with a virus from net he said me if I have the same problem again that he remunerate next time. Then I realize that I must learn something about computer because this is a personal computer. I enroll some courses for a computer services and know my interesting for a computer is grow. More I learn, more I wont to know. [Havaii]
Hello Havaii, Welcome to mylot, I wish you an enjoyable experience here!:-) It seems that you had to learn the lesson very quickly, so I would say that the earlier the better! It's really good that you felt the need and started to learn and I hope that it would have helped you a lot! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
best answer ive got, switch it off, switch it on again. If this doesnt work, fetch help blessed be [ESKARENA1]
Hello ESKARENA1, You are either lucky in that you never had a serious problem with your computer, or you are very prudent in your ways about computers such that you didn't allow any problem to occur in first place!:-) [kamran12]
I don't know a darn thing about reparing computers, but my hsuband does. Best of all he LOVES to repair computers, and had managed to make a little bit of money in the process. So to answer your question, no I don't ty to repair my own computer, I turn it over to my usband to repair, because he's so good at it. [danishcanadian]
Hello danishcanadian, It's still good that you have someone who would do it for you. I hope that you would learn a thing or two in the process. Do your husband demand something, in return, that you are good at!? :-) Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I love repairing things whenever I can. But, if it's something that is beyond my expertise, I will take it in or get a new one. But, I'm generally pretty good at fixing my computer. I plan, one day, to build my own computer, so I think I should know a little something about how they are put together. I usually find software problems very easy to fix, but when it comes to soldering things on a circuit board, then I'm at a loss. [desertdarlene]
You are welcome, desertdarlene! and best of luck with your goal, how ever you do it!:-) [kamran12]
can I repair my computer, yes. Do I like to repair my computer, no. If there is a repair needed, it usually means I have lost data or am taking time away from making money. [bradhart]
Hello bradhart, Yes, ability to repair and liking it are two different things so thank you for this differentiating response. I would think that mostly repair is about lost data or software issues and it's good that you have the ability to manage it. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I love working with computers. My job is a computer tech...i regularly fix my own computer as well as family members computers ontop of my job. Its just something that makes me happy...the tougher to figure out the better...it makes me think. at work we do repairs, installs, upgrades, virus cleanings. I really enjoyed a couple weeks ago taking apart a dead laptop to see whats all inside (including the monitor) finding out that the backlight of the monitor was the problem so took apart another one (i picked the same model up from the recycling depot) and repaired the monitor. Its an awesome little laptop now that its got video! My boss finds my "learning" during down time amusing. [saundyl]
Hello saundyl! Wow, you are already into it with full throttle! Who better could fix problems than a computer tech! You are very right that tougher problems make the fixing all the more interesting and enjoyable, though during the process one may get frustrated at times but once it's fixed, there is that satisfaction that one can't easily find otherwise. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I enjoy it.I think repair it by myself is just great~ [moonastrid]
It is great, moonastride, thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
Deal with PC problesm myself. That is one. Nope I usually take it to a technician for repairs. I am very bad at it. I have got hold of the way to set up the computer and attach the wires in right ports and all. Beyond that it is just too much of an effort. [anuraa30]
I hope so..... thank you [anuraa30]
Yes I do Have Lots of Probs when i start working on computer i own My first computer in 97 too . I was in 12th Std That tyme . The most common Probs was No sound Or sometimes working in safe Mode. My computer Guy was Outstation as my city was not well devloped for computer that time and i was really hard to take it for repairing every week . Then i tried some books and started practising my hands on my pc . Wondering how these stuffs work actually . Inspired me Learning and I took my Feild in computers . I am a computer Graduate and have 80 percent knowledge of computers . What and how . I really learned one thing if u are serious go ahead you can only learn by trying urself what if u get failed first tyme . There always a second tyme What u say guys ? [NikSaluja]
You Are Welcome Sir . Please Ask me if i can Help YOu in solving pc probs :) [NikSaluja]
If you start working on problems and solve them, saving on time and money are the most important things along with learning a lot about computer. I have been using a computer for the past 10 years and the day i started using it i was a novoice. I literally knew nothing about a computer. Initially i was just playing some games and listening to music and then started practicing my academic projects and programs. When ever i came across a problem i never asked any hardware engineer to take a look at my system instead i asked my friends who were a bit familiar with computers to take a look and explain me what i can do to rectify the problem. Later on i just browsed the internet and started resolving problems on my own. It is like i dont need to wait for some one when there is a problem. It was great to learn things on our own rather than depending on some one. Yes i did save a lot of money as well as time too. Once i couldnt rectify the bad sectors in the harddisk drive and i asked some one else to get them rectified for me who took nearly 3 days. In the mean time i dint have a computer to work on and it was my project proposal period so i was tensed a lot. Since then if any major problem arises with the hardware i directly contact the vendor and get that rectified or replaced as soon as possible. [crackhead]
Hello crackhead!:-) Thank you very much for your detailed response. It appears that I can relate to everything you have written here and your story sounds just like my own. It is always good to look for the remedy by oneself before giving up and depending on others to solve our problems. Internet is no doubt a great help and there is virtually nothing one can't find help for on internet, especially for software related issues even even for hard one! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
i tried to fix my old comp recently...like, i did lots of research and stuff on what was wrong, but i couldn't be positive. like, my friends told me it could hav been that i needed a new motherboard, but i dunno, i tried to fix it, first by reinstalling Windows XP, but it screwed up, so i might hav to take it to a technician sometime...lol...i tried [murtagh92]
Hello murtagh92, Welcome to mylot. I hope you will enjoy your stay here! :-) I hope your problems with your PC get resolved one way or the other! Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I deal all software problems myself. If it so difficult I will take my friends help. I never contact vendor for software problems. I usually don't deal with hardware problems. Till now I got only modem problem and I got it changed. [siriya]
No body knows everything, siriya! One should just try to learn as much as possible! :-) [kamran12]
Hello Kamran, I love messing around with my computer. I built it and have upgraded it several times. I am better with hardware than software, but between my husband and I we can usually figure out what is wrong and fix it. I haven't taken a computer to a technician since 1999, and was disappointed in the results at that time. I'm sure I have saved a small fortune by now. Summer before last I took a course to study for certification, then took and passed the Comptia A+ exam. I am very interested in programming too and would like to learn more about Java and C+. [shizuoka]
Hello shizuoka!:-) It is really great that you and your husband makes a winning combination when it's about computer problems. I am impressed that You haven't had to take your system to a technician since 1999. It does appear that you have special interest in computers and languages, good luck!:-) [kamran12]
i have dealed with computer problems like when i installed xp Pro on my computer i didnt have any of my drivers installed so instead of wasting $50 i just went to there website and download all my drivers and bam saved $50 :) [busta1]
Hello busta1, You seem to be very intelligent. Good for you, that's a lot of money there. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
Hello my friend kamran12 Ji, I would like to appriciation for your enthusism on record, which made you confident in repairing your computer. Not only computer, you can try anything, only that you may damage something initially, but I am very sure, you would be careful in future. Practice makes a man perfect. In my case, I have long experiences of repairing all types of domestic items, (electrical/electronic/plumbing/refrigeration). But my most satisfying experience, I wish to share with you. In 2004, we were to return from US, and our Suit-cases had been badly handled during onward transit by ground crews, resulting handles out. My son had decided to disepose-off by throwing them away and buying new ones, before returning, so we went to buy, and one place i found few nuts/bolts and screws. So i determined to repair at least for our travel to India (Bangalore), it was done at less than 2$ in all saving more than 200 $. So , on emust try and repair, it gives extra encouragement. Your efforts to repair your computer is praiseworthy. have a nice time. [chintoo07]
You too have a nice time! :-) [kamran12]
Well,I know a bit of computer knowleague,So I try to fix it by myself when my computer has problems, but I only can fix simple problem, when I donnt know how to fix it,then I will ask others to help me,but aways are free, cos they are my friends or collegues.,thanks&take care [Petercheung]
Hello Petercheung! It's must be great that you have knowledge of computers and apply it too. Having helping friends and colleagues is a blessing too. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
Hi Kam: Have you read the book, "Computers For Idiots"? I think they wrote it for me. I did read it and now I can fix a lot of things on my computers. My computer, under assessories, has a 'tools' area to help. Have a great day. Ivor [TheSpy]
I would think that you could write one of your own books now, TheSpy! It's great to be able to repair one's machine, isn't it? Thanks for sharing! :-) [kamran12]
when i first bought my pc, i had to carry my whole cabinet to a guy staying nearby to fix it for me but after 2-3 times, all i did was go to that guy and ask him what to do and took his number. from that that day i am fixing my own computer and have even fixed my friends computer!! now after knowing what is what inside the system i think it is not that tough to fix the problems in pc. thanks to that guy! [zpanmei]
Hello zpanmei! Welcome to mylot. I hope you will enjoy your time here! :-) It sure is great to have someone who could guide and it's very wise of you to learn it for yourself. Yes, it's not that tough after knowing what's inside. Of course, Knowledge is power. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I used to work at a community college, in academic technology, so I developed a lot of computer troubleshooting skills. I was still hesitant to do too much to my personal computer for a while but, once I started maintaining/repairing/upgrading on my own, I was hooked. Most computer problems/upgrades can be easily taken care of but, for difficult problems, I would recommend having an experience tech look at it. [spalladino]
Hello spalladino, Welcome to mylot. I hope your experience here will be most enjoyable!:-) It's good that after initially being hesitant, now you can deal with your computer problems. It's a relief in knowing one can. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I have the same experience with you. Many years ago,I had little information about computer. However,I have to learn to use it because of work . And I find that it is not so hard to handle actually . Now i am interestint of it and focus on the new infromation about computer sometimes. It sound like funny. [jyjnl_jia]
Oh, and welcome to mylot. I hope you would be enjoying your discussions here:-) [kamran12]
No, I am so clueless about fixing computers! [Nesha1]
Hello Nisha1, Welcome to mylot. I hope you will enjoy your time here!:-) I think, time will fix this clueless state of yours about fixing computers, or at least I would hope so. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
i am an engineering student..... i like repairing my computer.... its fun [rulzzster]
Hello rulzzster, Welcome to mylot. I hope you will enjoy your participations here!:-) It's good that you like to repair your computer and find it fun. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
Usually depending on the problem me and my fiance will try to fix it ourself, but if it is a bigger problem we will call my cousin Bobby cause he knows alot about computer and he can usually fix it,and he never charges that much. [hellcowboy]
Yeah it sucks that the economy is so bad,and its hard to afford gas and food, yet be able to afford to get a computer fixed, thats why sometimes its better do somethings yourself, have a good day, good luck in your life, and Happy Posting. [hellcowboy]
I used to know nothing about computer, the first time i had my computer is when i was in highschool, and my first computer was troublesome, so since i know nothing about the hardware or software, i always call for technician to fix it, after a while it get troubled again :S so i must call the technician again, that happen for a couple of time, but then i started to learn little by little about the software & hardware thing when i'm in college, and for now at least i can handle it myself if there's some software problem or hardware problem, never again i need to call for technician :) [poshboy]
Yes, it's easier to deal with software problems, and hardware problems should be left to technicians if one doesn't feel up to the task. You are almost at hundred points now where you will get your star:-) [kamran12]
Hello happy to know that you are a good mechanic so far as computer software and hardware are considered. Yes it is good as you not only save money but also time.My son is a computer engineer, I am a retired professor of physics, have taught this in engineerring colleges. So I don't face any problem in repair. [bhubaneshwars]
Hello bhubaneshwars, I am glad that you have your son to look into your computer problems. Thanks for sharing!:-) [kamran12]
I am in IT field so have to knowledge of computer hardware & software. I can repair my computer & solved any type of problem like hardware or software. I have a pc at my home. so if any problem occurred i can short out. [mayankbhushan]
Hello mayankbhushan, It's great that you have required knowledge to fix you PC's problems. Thanks for sharing:-) [kamran12]
I dont try to repair them .I have no knowledge in hard/soft ware parts of the system. [bhaskarsrkr]
Hello bhaskarsrkr, Welcome to mylot. I hope you will enjoy your time here!:-) I would also hope that your knowledge of computer will grow and you be able to repair your system yourself. [kamran12]
Oh yeah i do. I am a big computer geek so i love to work on my computer. Mine is self built so i put it all together. I have been working on them for quite a few years now. Its a lot of fun for me to get inside of a computer and do whatever i have to do. [Timothy31]
Yeah it definiteily is. Its a skill that also comes in handy with family members. If someone has a computer problem they call me. [Timothy31]
i always waited till my hubby fixed it but now my pc seems screwed up beyond belief so i will prob end up taking it to a shop =*( [moonlitmagikchild]
Google drive is free and provides 4GB or so of free disk space. It looks just like your local hard drive in your 'My Computer' folder. You need to have gmail account and of course internet. You can copy paste your files from your other drives to this one and it will be saved as email attachments. Moreover, Yahoo! provides UNLIMITED free space for its email inbox. You can save your files by emailing them to yourself. Note that, you can have only 10MB each in attachment. Formatting and Fdisk are different. Fdisk deals with partitions, creating and deleting partitions, and it erases whole data in the process as it creates new allocation tables. It does NOT affect CD-ROM though. Formatting, on the other hand erases data only from the drive formatting is applied to, and it prepares the drive for any installations. So, if you only want to reinstall windows, just move your data from C drive to D, and then format C and reinstall new copy of windows on it. [kamran12]
I deal with computer problems myself. In fact, let me tell you a story.... The other day I had booted into windows to play a game. I finished what I wanted to do and rebooted to go back into Ubuntu. I got to GRUB, started booting into Ubuntu and it froze. I rebooted. got to about the same place and it froze again. "Yay," I thought, "a problem." So, I pulled the power and waited a bit. I figured if I couldn't boot into Ubuntu I would boot into Windows (if I could) and then reload Ubuntu. Well, it sat for a long time trying to find the hard drives. I rebooted, got into bios and pulled defaults. Restarted. This time I got a drive error. I figured I had probably lost one of my hard drives. I opened the case and reseated all the drive cables and gave a general dusting. Then went and had dinner. When I came back, I put it all together and turned it on. No power. So I took it back apart reseated all the power cables and and fired it up again. No power. Well, I figured that it was either mother board or processor. I decided to try one more thing, since the post had mentioned a hard drive error, I decided to pull all the drives and see what would happen. put powe4r to it and it fired right up. So I was happy because it was obviously one of the drives. I started lookig at the drives in the process to see which one might be bad and noticed that there was one more in there than I had remembered. I looked at the extra drive and it was a 3.5" floppy drive. I had put it in there just in case I ever needed to flash the bios. I made the decision that I wanted that drive to be the bad one. So I connected all the rest of the drives and fired up the computer. She fired up and has been working wonderfully ever since. [DarkDancer]
Nah, I just had a bad floppy drive. It was an interesting find though, and very relieving. [DarkDancer]
We have owned multiple computers since about 1991. The first one was ordered by my husband, made to our specifications. Since then, every machine we have owned he has built himself, or replaced anything that went wrong, from the motherboard to HD to memory. He has done probably everything you can do to a computer to build one or replace all the parts. He has traced down problems with our computers, or daughter's, and friends. I don't think we could afford a technician to fix all the computers my husband has fixed. With grandchildren constantly crashing theirs, he stays busy all the time. He even set up our wireless netword and configured all our machines here to have the ability to access each other. And,that is neat! Years ago, when we still ran DOS or Windows 1.1,I could fix my own machine. My husband had been transferred to Nashville and I would take my desktop back and forth from home to the apartment. If I was home and had a problem,I often reformatted the HD and redid the machine by myself. I don't know that I could do that now using XP Pro or XP. I can deal with software problems and the easier things. I can even reformat one, but I leave it to my husband to do that now. [Barb42]
