i've been staying in front of the computer for atleast 3 hours a day straight more often now. i noticed that sometimes i can see little red dots flying around in my vision. well, i am a person with a "20-20" (perfect) vision. and i am afraid that my eyes could be damaged by staying for so many hours working in a computer. well, in my previous job, i have my own computer but i don't get to spend that much time with it since most of my tasks are paperworks.

i curious about it too.. since im almost online for almost 10 hours in a day... i do worry with my health.. [jazzdoit4real]
I was using computer for more than 10 hours a day from 5 five years. I haven't noticed such things happening. I was using faltron and LCD monitors. I don't think it was happening because of your monitor. Try to meet a eye specialist. It will be helpful. If you believe strongly because of monitor, then use anti-glare glasses. [adihindu]
Thats good. I don't think working with computer for just a 3 hours will effect your computer as most of the software engineers and computer specialist works on cumputer for most of the day and to atleast to a minimum of 30 hours a week. Happy to have your comment. [adihindu]
If you're using LCD screen, the radiation is not that strong but you need to be in a brightly-lit room since it tends to be slightly darker than normal CRT. Try to look elsewhere after 1 - 2 hours staring at the screen. That should relax your eyes for a while. That's why I normally drink a lot of water in office. :D I'll be forced to go to the washroom. :D [daydreamer20]
so how does drinking water help? or it's just one way of resting your eyes from the computer? [maroseqf]
yes it true. staying in front of your computer for too long, can damage your eyes. have you never noticed how achy your eyes become after, say, 2-3 hours of working on the computer? also, your head might start hurting too. when there is a problem with your vision, your headache will be the first symptom to indicate it. so, if you have a job/hobby that forces/compels you to work at your computer for hours on end, then i advice is that take a 5 minute break after every half hour. it helps, trust me. the same advice goes for reading also. and i dont give advice if i am not sure about it, so take it from me... happy myLotting [Khushi309]
well, i haven't experienced headaches yet. hope i won't. :) [maroseqf]
i dont know about that but i think it does.. even if your on the comp 5 min it will hurt your eye... but its not what realy matters...-you need to ask this question:does any of your perents wear glases or not? [farjun]
thanks! don't worry i'll make a discussion for that. hope to see your response there. [maroseqf]
hahaha "red dots flying"..try to close ur eyes about 5 minutes or more once an hour...that makes u better..otherwise that normal, cos we getting older. ps:sorry my english is bad [CongSKY]
don't worry. it's okay. i got your point. thanks for the advice! :) [maroseqf]
Yes, it is 100% true.. Look, the effect of it works after a week, try staying on your computer a long time, perhaps 5 to 8 hours a day, then try to read on a book, or a small signage far away. Then you'll see the truth, your eyes become weak. [deathvans]
oh no! that's bad. i think i better be more careful now. thanks! :) [maroseqf]
Yes it will damage your eyes! 1) Your eyes have muscles to control their focussing. Like all muscles they need exercise. Hence if you focus entirely on one place for hours on end it will hurt your eye muscles and likely to cause eye strain. If your computer is by a window, every few minutes you should look out the window and change the focussing. This exercise will prolong the life of the muscles! Otherwise, like me, you'll end up needing glasses to focus on reading/computers and give your eye muscles a rest. 2) If you have a cathode ray tube type monitor you can affect your eyes and body with the radiation. Since you are pregnant you shoul dbe using a LCD flat screen monitor. in Sweden I believe pregnant women are not allowed to use CRT monitors for fear of miscarriage or other damage to unborn baby! Happy Mylotting but everything in moderation! [BubblyIan]
well, that's great. we have an lcd monitor here. anyway, thanks! :) [maroseqf]
more then 10 hour a day for my blogs, Finished today;http://ccnotebooktips.blogspot.com/ [prasopchok]
Yes, so just to be safe please go to the doctor and have an eye check up. Please let your eyes take a break for a couple of minutes when you're working with your computer. It's better to have a prevention because it's safer that way. [emojboy]
i work with computer since 1997, till now dont had problem with my sight. i ride bikes and riding it in the night, like 01.00-03.00 AM. my mom had glasses since young. [dwisasono]
well, that's nice to know. so there is still hope that it may not damage you eyes. :) [maroseqf]
Yes, it could if you spend too much time in the computer. i used to have a perfect sight when my ophthalmologist told me that i had a far sight problem. then, i was advised to wear glasses. just relax your eyes when your really tired. don't push it. [Greeneagle24]
Staying too long in front of the computer would stress your eyes. On the other hand there are different methods you could use to lessen the stress of your eyes. Personally I put cold packs in my eyes in this way my eyes could relax much faster. It was recommended by my friend doctor. [brando10]
that's nice. thanks for the advice fellow lotter! :) i'll try doing that some time. [maroseqf]
I'm using computers for around 15 years now. And my sight is at its best. However, my mom is nearsighted since birth and my father is farsighted since his 30ies.. Maybe I'm the golden mean :D However, I had some problems with my sight in my youth. I used to look like a vampyre once. Red eyes and stuff.. But then suddenly it all passed and no problems since then. You never know... Still I do suggest you take a visit to a doctor. Red/black flying dots could mean that your retina has problems. This could even result in blindness. Good luck! [Sandcube]
ill spend atleast 8 hrs continously in front of computer, yeah it poses serious threat to our eyes, its better if u use computer spectacles..!!!and should take break for ten minutes after every half an hour [aditya540]
maroseqf hi those red dots are just floaters and almost everyone has a few, not to worry thats what myopthamologist said to me. and 3 hrs in front of computer is nothing, a lot of us are on ten or more hours so 3 wont hurt you at all. be sure you have enough natural light in your room and take a break ocassionally .also if you have an old monitor thats harder on your eyes, I love my new thin led monitor as its so much easier on my eyes and I really noticed it right away. my eyes with the old clunky one used to hurt and ache but now I spent the same amount of time on here and I am just fine now. [Hatley]
hello, it is true that staying for long durations over the computer can really damage the eyes. only considering the computer screen as a source of light...... discarding the fact that harmful rays come out from the monitor..... the more time we give at gazing at the sites the more pressure is exerted on our eyes and the more damage we make to it. there are four things that we must take into our consideration about the monitors damaging our eyes... 1. the screen must be properly illuminated so that we may not strain our eyes very much. 2.there should be a light source at the back of the monitor so that we do not have to strain our eyes against a dark background. 3. we must do eye check up at times so that there is no refractive errors.... if we watch the monitor with our errors then there will be more strain on our eyes. 4. and lastly ... there must be an effective distance between the monitor and the eyes... that must be at a minimum of twenty inches. anyways have a good day here at my lot. [praveenjena]
Yes, it can really damage our eyes for staying in a prolonged period of time in front of the computer. Personally, I have a computer-related job and I mainly spent my day working with a computer. Recently, this past few months I guess, I did develop an eyestrain due to prolonged periods of sitting in front of a computer, going for hours without taking a break. Fortunately, it is only mild and did resolve completely for two days. It is really important that we have to rest our eyes after using a computer. Not to mention that we need to eat vegetables that are rich in vitamin A like carrots and squash, which are one of my favorites and fruits like bananas. Luckily, up until now my eyes are still clear despite the lifestyle that I have. God speed! [braveheart07]
Yes I do believe that staying long in front of the computer can damage your eyes. It has lights and UV rays I guess. I face the monitor when I feel sleepy especially at night otherwise it makes my vision worst. My buddy advices me to try putting brightness down at night and always have background lighting (like a lamp) ifever I work at night in front of the monitor. Always work in a well lit room or if you are in a dim environment, try to have background lighting as it reduces strain on your eyes. [amira_milka]
Absolutely, the irradiation of computer will affect your eyes. What kind monitor of your computer,CRT or LED?you need more Vitamin A if you are aizziness in front the monitor, eat more carrot and animal liver is better for you to obtain Vitamin A. I'm very envious of your perfect vision because I'm a myope.I hope you can mantain your good eyesight. [armada8213]
it does i think, one proof is my eyes, i just notice that sometimes i cant see clearly, whoa!!!but im planning to visit an optalmologist early this week, its just that have no time, but have soo much time on my computer though, lol [carmela0210]
Yes, it does cause eye strain. Before I used computers on a daily basis I did not need to wear glasses. Then, I developed near-sightedness as a result of daily computer use. One day I could see across the room to the sign in board at work. I visited the optometrist and he told me that computer use had caused me to become near-sighted. doh After that I have had to wear glasses while driving as I cannot read the street sign names any more. It just makes my vision sharp again so it is not fuzzy anymore. rolleyes Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!! happy [schulzie]
well, thanks for sharing! but i'm still hoping that my eyes won't get damaged or something to that effect. [maroseqf]
While computers have no known harmful effects on eyesight, computer users do often complain of eye related symptoms such as eyestrain, headaches, fatigue, dry eyes, and difficulty focusing, These symptoms (Computer Vision Syndrome - CVS) however are caused not by the computer screen itself but rather by the conditions surrounding the computer screen, such as poor lighting or improper placement of computer equipment and computer furniture. In some instances, a pre-existing eye problem may be the cause. http://www.pasadenaeye.com/faq/faq08/faq08_text.html [whiteheather39]
Since young, I've had "20-20" vision and I've never had to wear spectacles. When I started work in my 20's, I joined an IT organization, so my work was done mostly on the computer. Each day I will spend at least 8 to 10 hours looking into my workstation in the office, and when I get home, I still spend some time on my home computer. I've done that for 20+ years, and all this time, my vision was still great. So I'm not sure if working on the computer for long hours really damage one's eyes. I guess that may occur if one stares for prolonged periods into the computer screen. For me, I try and relax, sit back far enough so that I don't have to really stare into the screen, and once a while I will look away and stare out of the window into the distance. That helps my eyes relax, and that probably helps to keep my eyes away from damage. [lexus54]
well, that's great news! thanks fellow lotter! :) [maroseqf]
I have a good eyesight. And I spend most of my time in my computer for about 16hrs. I am a graphic designer. And I havent noticed anything wrong in my eyes. But when I used to work in an office before and having to work in a computer and facing a monitor for 8hrs makes my eyes tired. But not in my pc at home. It's probably because I have that filter covering my monitor. The glare of the computer is just basically right and soothing. So i think if you spend long enough of your time in your pc, then i suggest you buy that filter. [sassyangelee]
I have a slightly tinted pair of glasses that I wear when sitting at the computer for long. I spend alot of time on here, and I have one eye that I really started having trouble with. I reduced the brightness on my computer also. It has helped tremendously. [Thoroughrob]
i don't think it's probably what you'd say good for them. people who have a job working w/computers don't have much of a choice. [ANTIQUELADY]
I don't know, if it really damages the eyes, you would have to ask an eye doctor. I know that mine sure hurt after about an hour if I don't take a break. [savypat]
yeah, it makes my eyes tired and a little painful.. so when that happens i would stand up for a while try to talk with my friends and make myself a coffee.. then i am back on my desk! at least, that way i wont have to be staring the computer continuously in a long period of housrs, that way, they get to rest from the monitors radiation for sometime!happy [austere]
I think older monitors were more apt to tire, or damage your eyes. I remember the old monichrome monitors that were black, with either orange, white or yellow letters. I used to get terrible headaches using them, but had to as part of my job. Newer monitors, especially the LCD ones, are much easier on the eyes. It's also nice to be able to adjust the brightness and contrast for less eye strain. It's not a bad idea to get up and walk around at least once an hour, while you're on the computer. That's not only good for your eyes, but good for your body too. [catdla1]
Doctors say it affects the eyesconfused. You could either put an antiglare screen before the monitor. You can reduce the brightness of the monitor.you can also wear anti reflecting glasses to divert harmful rays from the computer to your eyes.happyhappy [vicky30]
Yes it can. I get headaches at times when I am on the computer for 8 hours. lol So I try to take a break every hour or so. I stopped getting the headaches, so it was definately the computer doing it. When you go for an eye exam, that is one of the questions they ask you "do you work on a computer" I told my daughter to check yes. Her fiance said, "but she doesn't work on a computer" lol I said, "when she isn't at work, she's on the computer, so yes she does work on a computer". lol [icyorchid]
I haven't observed any changes in my quality of sight because of too much time in front of the internet. I am yet to read a news where someone got their eye damaged for staying too long on the screen. I got a little worried actually when I read this post and thought that everyone would agree that the eyes can be damaged. It seems that not everyone shares that opinion. Maybe other factors lead to eye damage and not just directly because of too much exposure to the computer screen. One thing that I can mention is the eye strain that we experience. We don't notice it but our eyes rarely blink when we're in front of the computer. This is because our brain is too focused with what we are doing that it forgets to remind our eyelids to shut once in a while. This cause dryness of the eyes leading to strain. I experience this during the night when I'm happily browsing Mylot and forget to rest my eyes. It is really advisable to take eye breaks ever after a few minutes so that we won't get long term complications. happy Cheers! [JAREDSQUALL]
Hi there. Yes staying to long working on a computer with no breaks at all damages the eyes. You should have a break from the PC for about 10 minutes every 2 hours AT LEAST, to prevent serious damage on the long term to the eyes. [elitess]
I also stay atleast 2 hours a day before internet. At present i dont have any problem But every one suggests me to not to long time at late nights. It will defnetly cause damage to our eyes Since we are leaving sleep and putting eyes in strain [ravitejareddy]
Reminiscing my gaming days, I think I spend 6 hours everyday in front of the computer and I'm a bookworm as well. Sometimes my eye gets blurry and worse I get headaches. Fortunately, I still have 20/20 vision and I strongly believe that it is due to my daily diet wherein I always eat vegetables everyday. [janwin]
well, i also have 20-20 vision although i don't eat alot vegetables. i am more of a meat person. [maroseqf]
Hi I just attend an Eye Care seminar. One the effects of prolonged use of computer is Computer Vision syndrome or (CVS) It is a group of eye and vison related problems that result from prolonged compueter use. Most of the common sysmtoms assiociated with Computer Vision syndrome are: 1. Eye strain 2. Headaches 3. Blurred Vision 4. Dry eyes 5. Neck and shoulder pain 6. Burning eyes 7. Grainy feeling 8. Photophobia 9. Muscle Spasm These symptoms may be caused by 1. Poor lighting 2. Galre on the computer screen 3. Improper viewing distances 4. Poor Seating Posture 5. Uncorrected vision problems. For every 20 minutes of sustained viewing, it is advisable to rest for 20 seconds and looking at an object which is 20 feet away (when applicable). Blinking also helps. When we continously stare at the computer screen, we blink less. Also [king4aday]
that's very interesting. thank you. [maroseqf]
yeah it does so u mist just take a break for a few minutes and mostly doctors advise to takea glimpse outside the window this helps ur eyes to relax a bit mostly doctors advise to keep the computer near the window so that u can relax very fast and keep ur eyes calm [pratiksanghvi]
Hi maroseqf, I think that my eyes is getting damaged because I spend all day in front of the computer and I don't get enough sleep.. right now my eyes hurt and I want to see another think now, anything besides a monitor! glare [Anchopy]
well, i am not far from being like you. my husband teases me sometimes that i am the "internet explorer" like dora the explorer. [maroseqf]
staying in front of the pc for a long time can be really bad to ur eyes since u put alot of pressure on ur eyes.. the best thing u can do is always take a break maybe after 1 hour or 2 hours.. give rest to ur eyes since they r one of the most precios organs in our body.. i hav recently got a job where i hav to work on the pc .. so i try to take breaks in between. it helps me alot. first i used to sit on the pc for a long period without takin breaks. and my eyes used to pain alot at the end of the day.. then i went for a check up to a eye specialist and she told me to take breaks as often as possible.that advice really helped me .. so please do take care of ur eyes.. [peterbarretto08]
I think everything that we do in life and especially that it is our health that is concerned is that I am almost in the computer to the whole day but I am so glad that my eyesight was still fine until this time at my age and I do not think that it is the first reason to make our eyes damage...... [iyah10]
