Kids learn how to use a computer at school, but most adults left school before computer skills were taught.
When I got my first computer I knew how to use a keyboard, as I had previously used electric typewriters and word processors. But no-one ever showed me how to use a computer, I had to find out for myself. Once you know how to use the internet you can learn everything else online can't you?
Did you have to learn how to use a computer?
[question posted by paid2write]
responses and comments:
To be honest i dont learned it in my college days.. we just have 1 unit for 20 students.. so after college i decided to study, enroll to some free computer learning centers sponsored by government officials. [fajert]
You were lucky to get on a free training course [paid2write]
When I was in school, I was just ahead of the computers being schools, but my dad is an accountant and uses computers in his work. Whenever he got a new one for work he would bring the old one home and let us play with it. He is the one who had me sign up for email, showed me how to navigate the internet, and let me chat in chat rooms. I took a keyboarding course in high school and I think another computer class (don't remember). Then I took classes on Word, Access, Powerpoint and Excel in college. But most of what I know is from trial and error. I can also use a PC or a Mac. And I have one of each at home for my personal use. [Aurone]
You were lucky to have a Dad who let you play on his old computer [paid2write]
my 2 daughters taught me what i know about pc's ,i was always a paper and pencil person . [mrpippo]
nice you could learn from your daughters [paid2write]
I learn how to use a computer by self [angelvoyagera]
nice to meet you :[ [angelvoyagera]
My father bought me a computer when I was 10 years old. That was way back 1993-1994. It ran on Windows 3.1. My hard disk was only 540 MB. I wasn't learning some skills back then, I was just playing games. I learned some basics when I had to do some projects that require typing. [argie713]
At least you got experience of using it at 10 years old [paid2write]
I self taught myself to use the computer. The little things I was taught by my daughter (13). Like the keys on the keyboard. That are not self explanatory. [giftsandbagscom]
It's good that your 13 year old daughter could teach you something [paid2write]
I don't really remember for sure...I think my uncle had a computer and let uds play games on it...if it wasn't that, I think we had them in 4th or 5th grade and we did math stuff on them...I pretty much grew up with them for the past 15 years...though I didn't really learn how to use it for its full potential until the past few years... [vera5d]
playing games would be a good introduction [paid2write]
We had a computer classes at school, but we much more use things like programming and so. I learn by myself, I just click on things and seen how they worked. My husband always ask me, how come I am so good(what I am not, but he does know less than me). I think I am just not scared just try to do something and leanr how the things work. [laurika]
I think the best way to learn is by trying, then you can show your husband how to do it [paid2write]
I taught myself how to use a computer. I just sat down at one and started typing and then started clicking on programs to see what they did. There is still alot of things I can't do on the computer but I can use the interent and check my email the most important things. [luvstochat]
There are things I don't know too but I will find out how if I need to [paid2write]
I learned to use the computer largely through trial and error, paid2write. One of my daughters thought I had too much time on my hands and she just showed up with a computer one day.lol I, like you, already had typing skills so that part was easy. I discovered a whole new world once I signed onto the internet and I love it. [worldwise1]
?????????!???????????,???????????????,???????????????!???????????!??qq413563360 [xiaoyaha]
I was still in elementary school when computers started to get more and more advanced in the late 90's. I learned most of my computer skills there. [megumiart]
You must have have some good skills from learning at school [paid2write]
I learnt how to use a computer in my first job 18 years ago, mind you they were a lot different then. I could already type as I had been to college and learned typing there. My hubby showed me the basics of a computer and then really I have been learning as I go along and I pick up the little things here and there, so really I am still learning. [gemini_rose]
I am still learning too. [paid2write]
i first used computer at school when i was in my early elementary days, but we really did nothing but play games *educational games*.. i first learned how to use it when i was in grade 3 i think, when we had our first computer, my sister taught me how to use it.. [neknek]
I'm sure you learned a lot from those educational games, not just computer skills [paid2write]
In my middle school we had Mac computers. So that thought me how to use the keyboard and doing simple searches on the web. Then my mom bought me a PC my last year of middle school. So I would say I thought most of everything I know myself with the PC. [CardboardWaves]
I do think her for that. I wasn't a real good speller in school, so she bought me one so I can improve my spelling. I love to write short stories and poems. So I would type them up and see what spelling mistakes I made. It helped a lot!! [CardboardWaves]
I taught myself. When I was in school I didnt learn too much about computers. I hadnt been on one for a long time. After I graduated I bought a computer with my graduation money and taught myself everything I know. Since then I have bought 2 more computers and taught friends and family how to operate one and use the internet. [enchantedleppard]
It's nice to share your knowledge with your family and friends [paid2write]
My interest to learn the computer started in highschool. During gradeschool we are not really hands-on when it comes to computers. It is more of lecture type from the book. During highschool were internet became popular among my friends. Backstreet Boys was so popular then and I was fascinated how they were able to obtain pictures of them. I asked my parents to buy me a computer and though my school teaches us how to use it , basically about 80% were self taught and from practice. [bluecrystal1982]
Finding pictures is a good way to get started on with the internet. [paid2write]
I taught myself... by trial and error (a bunch of errors!and a bunch of crashes! lol) but I'm more of a hands on type of person, so I prefer learning it the way that I did. I'm not the smartest.. but I'm far from the dumbest! lol! [Little_Stormy]
I'm also a 'hands on' type, I'm not good at following instruction [paid2write]
I started using computers when I was in primary school, I taught myself everything through clicking here and there, and slowly learning how to do things. I remember they taught us how to use computers late in primary school, I used to think those classes were so boring because they were teaching us things that I thought everyone already knew about, but as it turns out, that wasn't the case... I just wondered off during those classes :). [cellophane]
Myabe you knew as much as the teacher in those classes [paid2write]
My friend had a ZX81 about 25 years ago where we would play Football Manager Sims and RolePlaying Games on, the rest progressed from there. So it was games that introduced me to a computer :) [Jimeous]
It seems many people started by playing games on the computer, [paid2write]
FRANKLY SPEAKING,i learned the basic operation in high school.while that truly are basic operation.we have computer and internet courses in university, which gave me more skills and knowledge. just as you said,we can learn everything through internet, thus i learn the most useful internet skills and develop it just through internet.as we know,we can reach everywhere and everything through search engine.i used to search on internet every time i come across a puzzle.the result is always satisfying, coz internet is omniscient.if you can't get you want, that means you have to improve your search skills first.lol [sophialin]
I agree, the Internet is a valuable source of knowledge and it's good to have the skills to know how to find out about anything you need to know [paid2write]
I study computer science so I find it easy to use internet. [2btrueinu]
I'm sure what you have studied will always be of great use to you [paid2write]
I was discussing this very subject with my (55 yr old) mother today. We were saying how most older people that we know are intimidated by the internet and the actual computer itself. She still has a hard time learning the ins and outs of surfing the web. I self-taught myself also, just by playing around, investigating and soaking up all the knowledge I possibly could. I am of the generation of those who were barely taught how to use a computer in school. I know enough now to be able to others be able to understand how to use one and be confident in their abilities. [gopats]
I know some older people have a fear of new technology but really they are missing out on a lot. I was in my 40s when I first used a computer. I know many people who have started to use computers in their 50s and 60s. [paid2write]
i learned it in college, with my classmates, we learn it more by playing games. you can try it. or read some article about computer. [alexpuqin]
I found some computer mazagine articles were useful for learning how to do things [paid2write]
I remember the first time Dad finally brought a computer home. he was the first person did experiments with the computer even until late midnight. :P well I was only around 8 years old back then, however, Dad let me tried some banner making programs, and that's the first time I learned about keyboards, some OS menu, and the banner creator was the first software I 'played' with. LOL. and when Windows 95 finally showed up, I think that was the time when I finally got addicted to 'typing'. I still used Notepad at that time. *grinning* however, the most fast learning experience started when I finally had my own computer when I entered 2nd semester in university. and I was a computer science major graduate. wink [bongkarpasang]
You made a good start making banners at 8 years old. I bet your Dad was really proud when you graduated. [paid2write]
I learn computer from my sister, she always took me to cybercafe to chatting in internet...it really helpfull when i futher my studies in college. In college i learn to use computer, theory and practical. I dont have problem because i know to use computer...hehe Now, i have my own computer in office. So, everyday when i have free time, i always explore my computer to learn more about internet and get more information about many thing. [edaabby]
ahaha...u're right! I did'nt realize that (",) [edaabby]
My first experience with computer was in 1991. If I am not mistaken the model was MD512. The drive was floppy Disc, kind of big and soft. We have to write command in order to retrive information from the files, just like Dos system. I learnt using the computer merely through reading book and asking for information from friends. I had great interest in computer those day and in fact until today. As years goes by, I was introduced to Microsoft Office. So, bye-bye to typewriter. Again, I learnt Microsoft Office through reading. From there I learn about other applications and softwares. I learn through trial and error so long as my computer doesn't explode. Now I am trying to learn about the technical side of the computer. What I meant is how to add the RAM in the RAM slot, install DVD hardware, intall hardrive and also getting familiar with all the cables and wires in the PC compartment. I have few books as my guide. I explore all this by using my old PC. In no time, I will be able to repair PC. Until today, this is my 4 PC units. I try to keep abreast with the latest technology in computer. I am a fast learner, provided I like what I am doing. Anyway, I like this topic. Why I didn't think about it. Have a nice day. [goldwin65]
I would also like to learn the technical side. I think I could do it. You have a nice day too. [paid2write]
I learned a little in school, but for the most part I learned at work. [beaniecat]
I learnt how to use a computer from my elder brother. He was always interested in computers. As a result I also got interested and try to learn from him. This was almost 18 years ago. [sohelkm]
i was able to learned it when it become a part of our curriculum in college...and my boss/employer enhanced my knowledge thru attending tuturial classes...which shes the one who pay for it.. [vanities]
I started using a computer when i was in my 6th standard.. computers were introduced as a subject in my school. They started teaching about the components of a computer as a basic.. They began with some programming languages like Logo, Basic and DOS.. But only time i could get to use a computer was in the computer laboratory only.. It was after 2 years that my brotehr bought a computer and now i had a nad-on practice on a computer. We were introduced to Windows and I would like to navigate throught the features on my home Pc. My brother was a guidance to me..In school we were given coaching only on the features part.but my brotehr had done a hardware course and i learnt about assembling the pc by looking at the way he would handle problems which would occur on the home pc.. Later in my 11th standard i want to a cyber cafe and that was the first time i got introduced to internet.. I somewhat got addicted to it.. and now i am able to search easily.. I became proficient just by practice.. [vipulchawla]
Oh ya.. I knew how to work on a computer around 4 years before i started using internet. I would watch movies or practice my school homework on the computer. I started using internet only after i moved out of home.. I went away for studies after my 10th standard and being into a fascination got introduced to internet.. [vipulchawla]
I can't remember which came first, but I remember the combination of getting my first personal computer and a book titled " Basic computing for dummies" did the trick. I was using computers at work but the interface was Linux and it was impossible to surf the net or do anything else except data entry. I could recall vividly when I left school and landed my first job and was sent a software class without being asked if I know how to use computers.....the shame I felt when the instructor gave me the odd look. [catmint]
I guess everyone expected me to know how to have basic pc operating skills but I just left school and have not even got the chance to look at a real computer except those in pictures and on tv. [catmint]
Hello paid2write! Back in high school we have basic computer subject. But then i didn't learn that much because of the mere fact that i am not interested with computers. Only after i graduate from college that i finally realized that computers these days are a part of our everyday life and by then i started learning it with the help of my best friend. Happy myloting! [chase07]
Hello chase07. A few years back I think none of us knew how much computers would become part of our everyday lives. [paid2write]
I learn about computer on school, firstly. Then I take a short computer course for about three months. Also I usually learn everyting from computer till now I think I've mastering a bit about computer.happy [az03r4]
I leant using computer in my school. We had computer basics as a subject. I leant to use it in the lab when I was in 5th grade. The teacher was really friendly. We also learnt basic programming language. The first computer I got was a 386 machine which had Dos and Lotus 123. I used to play all those Dos games. I also had a banner making software so learnt about fonts and other formating issues. In a way I was lucky that in my school they taught us computer basics because other schools introduced the subject two years later. [Screech]
Your school must have been a good one to introduce computer basics before it became a standard subject. I'm sure you have benefitted from it. [paid2write]
I learned using a computer when I was in grade school. Good thing at that time, we have computer laboratories at school. There will be 2 students on each computer and we need to take turns to used it. I started to learned using the internet when I was in college. In my highschool years, we were never thought on how to used the internet. I guess at that time, internet isn't widely available. [reejane]
I'm sure every college student now relies on the internet for study and research purposes. [paid2write]
I have learned to use a computer while at work. It was my first job after I graduated from college and I belong to the Accounting Department which uses computers most of the time. I didn't get any hands on training in school though I've got some theoretical knowledge on it. I didn't have a hard time learning it but I still supplemented my on the job learning with other short computer courses so that I'll be more knowledgeable in it. [heart143]
i took some classes at a junior college..and the rest is just by being on the computer and chatting with kids...young internet boys taught me a lot of stuff about the computer. met them in chatrooms and games, and giving me some tips. and chatrooms have improved my typing speed. so the rest is by just doing it and playing on the computer...meeting others on the net and getting tips from them... [fifileigh]
Sharing and exchanging tips seems to me to be a great way to learn [paid2write]
Today use computer is very useful [bckgnm007]
When I left school, they did have electric typewriters yet. I have taught myself to use the computer. It was a lot of trial and error, but I am doing okay. There are still heaps of things I can learn, But I would rather learn slowly, that way I have a greater chance of being able to remember everything I learn. [Goodie123]
You are right, it is no use learning somthing if you cannot remember it. [paid2write]
I used to learn computers as a subject in school, but then Dad bought me a good configuration PC, then there was no stpping at all. I know 5 programming languages, web designing, animation, gaming, net surfing, net earning, etc etc. Take care. [ProdigY47]
You do seem to have learned all the most useful things to do on a computer. [paid2write]
I don't remember really learning how to use a computer. I remember we had basic computers while I was at senior school and even more basic ones at middle school. We didn't use them a lot though. We did have I.T. lessons at senior school but we didn't really do anything other than word processing which we all seemed to know how to do somehow! We didn't have internet at school. I think we did at college but it wasn't very popular. I learnt how to use the internet only recently but I mostly taught myself through trial and error and occassionally asking my 8 year old for advice! [pumpkinjam]
They learn much more about computers and internet at school now. I also have a 2 year old so I am now an expert user of the "CBeebies" website! [pumpkinjam]
I just bought myself a computer, a friend of mine showed me the basics, the rest was just trial and error. [mumof3horrors]
no, i just got one and learned to use it:) [dnbuster]
i never know whenn i understand computer. what i remember is i used my friend's computer :) [gukguks]
The very first thing I learnt is browsing with the help of a friend. It hardly took an hour. And once my wife went on a vacation to her sister's house for a month I went to a coating class to learn the basics like word, excel power point etc. [balasri]
Neither.I had nothing better to do in her absence.lol [balasri]
I also knew how to type from a word processors but the computer is much more then that and I stayed away from learning how to use one until I just did not have a choice anymore. It was my brother and the first person I ever chatted with that helped me learn how to use a computer. My brother had asked me to help me with a report and that all the information he needed was online. Oh boy he is going to get an F on this paper was something along the lines of what I was thinking because I was clueless. He signed me in under his AOL name and pulled up the pages that were needed to help with the report. I ended up in a chat room and talking to some computer geek that helped me figure out what I was doing and he still helps me today when I am lost about something related to the computer. . [razcal2267]
It seems your brother did you a good turn when he asked for your help [paid2write]
I was back to school for learning computer, haha... At that time I just graduated from one high school, waiting for university's admission, meanwhile my grandfather asked me to go and study computer, and there were many ads in newspaper talking about computer course, I chose one course in one institute, went there for bit more than one month, learned Microsoft windows, word, excel, and little bit DOS, later I went to one training center to learn internet, it's interesting, I liked studying computer, hehe... However, my brother learned on his own completely, who's also operating very good now, even knows how to fix it when there's some problem, hehe... [lindazhao333]
Ya it's interesting to learn something about computer, hehe [lindazhao333]
Well, i don't learn computer at school, most of the things i do in my computer i learn from tutorials and from my great friends. Well, its difficult for me to say how i was when we bought our computer, but i can say that i know how to handle mouse, keyboard and also i know playing games...too... CheerS!!! [mnsrwt123]
As long as you know how to do what you need to do, that's enough. Cheers. [paid2write]
When i first touched computer, I can not type , I did not know how to use it to surf the net, and was curious about how it works. At that time, computer a luxurious thing in my country, and not everyone can have one. So I can only use it two hours in a week. And making full use of it to pass my computer tests in the college. I learn how to type with the help of my roommate, for she had a laptop computer at hand, and learn how to use it to surf the net under the help of my computer teacher. Now I can use it , and make posts here. [nini168]
I'm so pleased you did learn to surf the net and can now post at myLot. [paid2write]
hi paid2write. I don't remember exactly how I learn it. I had some classes at school, but I didn't learn much at these calsses. Most of my knowledge about computers is from my own experinecehappy. My younger sister was always very interested in computers and internet, she helped me a lot too. It was long ago. Have a nice day, jazgottt. [jazgottt]
hi jazgottt. You have a nice day too. [paid2write]
When our kids were little and computers weren't in every house we came into some money and my husband wanted to pay bills with it but I thought it would be a great idea to use it on a computer and a computer desk. We didn't even know how to turn the blasted thing on when we got it so we got into a computer class at the neighboring towns community college. The instructor would come out to our house and help us with our business books. Boy were we green! I remember telling my kids to turn on the computer before they went to school so that we could work on it as I didn't remember how to turn the thing on! [hornswaggled]
It would be helpful to know how to turn it on first! [paid2write]
lol, I just turned it on and played solitair at first, but within a week I was able to type stuff up slowly. In 2 months, I could do pretty much everything XD. [jeseravi]
Bought my first 'hobby' computer kit March 1977. When IBM came out with their PC, I had a much better computer than they came out with. I had to assemble (solder!) all the parts to my motherboard myself. Then I bought some books and taught myself to program in Basic. I was very happy to find some 4KB (4,096 bytes!) memory boards for 'only' $85.00 each. Quite a change now, as I just bought 8GB of RAM for $141.00 ;-) for my next computer, parts arriving in the next 3 days... [IddiKlu]
You must have seen a lot of changes in computers over the past 30 years! [paid2write]
I've got my first PC when I was 14. It ran in DOS and didn't have a hard drive. So I've seen the operative systems grow and develop (or deform). However I learned the first steps at school using LOGO and DBASE. Yes, I am that old. [Nushka]
LOGO, COBOL, PASCAL, BASIC... Don't these ring any bells? [Nushka]
This is something that I can relate to when I first got a computer about 3 years ago I knew nothing and had very little to go on. My typing skills were non existent and as far as computer lingo I was from another planet. I still have a lot to learn but what I have I have learned from making mistakes trial and error discussion newsletters and just fumbling around till I figured it out. [MISTRESSMARY420]
Yes fumbling and figuring it out is often my style too! [paid2write]
i just sat on the computer and started playing around and then soon i started to get addicted and now i can't get enough of the computer like many people my age. *cough* MySpace. [rw1234]
Jump in your way back machine. The year is 1996. I have a roomate. He is very intelligent. And he is into computers. He works for a company working on the INTRA-net. One day, I am not busy, just sitiing around, doing nothing. I hear him in his room typing away on a key board. I go to his room and say "whatcha doing?" And the rest is history. He decided to show me. The first computer I learned on was a MAC. Took me a little longer for the PC. By the way, the roomate is now my husband, and he is forever showing me new programs, and how to use them. I have my own teaching source and tech support. [ersmommy1]
That's one way to do it - marry a nice intelligent computer literate man! [paid2write]
I learned to use computer by myself. It is best learning this way. you can relax and you don't have to worry about anything going wrong because its your own computer. if a computer gets damaged by your hands in a study center, they will not treat you like a student and forgive you. they will blame you and they will demand a heavy fine. when you feel free, you will explore computer and learn more. self help, best help. [PatronusCharm]
I think I agree with you, and I never did any damage in my attempts. [paid2write]
When we got our first computer I didn't even know how to turn it on. HAHA. My husband tried to teach me but he was saying things all so fast and I could never remember. So one day I was at home and figured things out myself, for about a week when he got home from work he had to fix the computer or I would call my neice and tell her what I did. Ya she said "please stay off the computer when J's not home". But I didn't listen I was determed to figured this thing out, I did. Thank God I did cause I'm on medical leave, can't drive till (hopfully) Nov., Stuck in the house 24/7. Hey my laptop is my best friend HAHA. havfaith [havfaith]
I'm glad you had the determination to figure it out so now you can enjoy myLot [paid2write]
I also was out of school before they went to computers. I didn't learn until around 1994 I think it was when I went back to college for a two year degree. That was the first time ever I had used a computer. I took the typing classes on the computer and then other classes that I had to use the computer on. That is when I learned and then after that I went into a job that I used a computer constantly and while working I decided to buy my own computer and then have been on it ever since haha. I couldn't live without a computer I don't think. I am on most the day every day any time I can be between chasing son and doing other house work and such but I am always on it throughout the day and night. It did take me a bit of clicking around on it to learn things at the start and I know how to use them but not much on the programming part or hardware part. I can install things and stuff like that but wouldn't be able to fix a major problem if I had to. I love my computer :-) [Prairiedawn31]
I'm the same, can't stay away from my computer for long. [paid2write]
Hi paid2write, I had retired before I got my first computer. My son was buying a new one and gave me the old. I was always asking for help in the fist few months. There is still much that I don't know, but I am learning. Blessings. [Pose123]
Hi Pose123, I too am still learning things. I'm sure your son is a great help. Bless. [paid2write]
I learned it at home. We got those TRS 80 Radio Shack computers and I learned how to make programs on that. Had a mysterious game where you went into a haunted house and if you offended one of the people there, terrible things would happen. I also type out a jumping game called Egbert. We got the Rainbow magazine. Then we got the PC computer. That was in dos, and we were glad when windows came out. I did not get on the internet until our sons went to university, and it is free because of that. Then we got dial up and later cable. The computer was easy for me (except for the dos) because well my older son was taking computer classes and I learned by osmosis. [suspenseful]
Those early games look interesting. I've never played that type of game. [paid2write]
My sister and nephew showed my how to use a computer. It was about 3 years ago now. We went on a trip and they showed me how to play video games and then they taught me the rest later. [sarahruthbeth22]
I learned by trial and error, help from family and friends when I didn't understand something and, lots and lots of calls to technical support. [YorkieBear]
Sometimes they are useless but, I have had pretty good luck with them. I haven't used them though in years so not sure how they are now. [YorkieBear]
I bought books and practiced everything I was reading on the computer. There is a lot to learn about computers. The amount you learn is only limited by your willingness to learn. You could spend your whole life learning about computers... and you still would not know it all. People only learn enough to do the basic things that they want to do on their computer. But most of them know nothing about computers... or Windows or anything else. Only those who have a strong interest in computers... and regard their computer as a hobby... will learn how to manage their computer. [Aussies2007]
I agree with you. There is always a lot more to learn about computers which many of us will never know. [paid2write]
Nowadays,i think a primary scholar also know how to use computer, they even use more better than adults. When i was a pupil,i didn't know what the computer was.Only the DVD was so advanced for me.I contacted the computer when i studied in junior middle school.there was a computer lesson in my school, all of my class had to learn how to type.and used it to do some basal work.at that time, computer for me was so fresh.but my family could afford the money to buy one.when i got into the senior middle school, there also was a computer lesson, but the learning content was difficult than junior. At that time i own my frist computer which bought by my mother.I remembered that i was so happy and exciting when i got the presents.and i can use the computer more and more fluently.now i have the second computer which is better than the first one.I use it to watch movie, play games and chat with my friends far away. [moondan]
I think you are right. I'm sure most primary school pupils know more than I do about using computers. [paid2write]
I started in the early 80's on Amstrads and Mac's, just WP at that time for Meditation and health courses I was running for a charity. Got my own first computer, an Atari ST in the early 90's, still the best computer I have ever used, with it's own built in, simple bullet proof OS which you could enhance yourself, a faster boot speed than any PC I have used, on just a 8megHertz chip. I learnt loads on that computer, WP, DTP, graphic art, spreadsheets, programming, hacking, networking the ST to a Psion handheld for portable computing, music, and gaming, mostly from magazines, had no web then! Finally took a computer course in 1999 (Yawn, found out I knew more than the tutor). Finally replace my aging Atari (sniff) about 5 years ago when I had my first PC running Windows 98SE built for me( but I did install an Atari ST emulation application so I could still run some of my fave Atari applications! ) When that died due to the CPU over heating I had a new PC built which isn't quite as good as that first one, (won't go back to that company again) with XP installed. I also installed my Win98SE, several XP's and Linux running as virtual PC's. When I need to upgrade I will move over to Linux completely and only run Windows as Virtual and not as my 'boot/host' PC. I still don't know enough, if fact I have stared to forget a lot of the tricks and tips that I learnt over the years as those skills fall from usage. [Pablothehat]
Seems you can never know enough, even if you know plenty about computers. [paid2write]
My son had tried for a long time for me to agree to have a computer in the house. He finally convinced me and I had to learn how to use it. I knew how to type already so that wasn't a problem. But I had to learn the computer from the bottom up as far as how to connect with the internet. That was five or six years ago and now I can not imagine not having a computer around. [sunshinelady]
Absolutely pleased. I don't know what I would do now if I ended up losing my computer. I know I would survive but it would be hard for me. I don't know why I fought him for the length of time I fought him. But I am glad that he won out. It has brought me many hours of enjoyment. [sunshinelady]
Hi there... At first I use to play around on my cousin computer, I was very young, then when I got to school, we were always given a period of computers, which we we learnt the basics and played games, such as Carmen San Diago... As I got older, I went and studied computing, levels 1-4, then took a programming course as well. I can now go for a diploma then a bachelor degree... [Nardz13]
Hey there... Thanks for the positive comment. Have a great day... [Nardz13]
I took typing many years ago in high school, so had retained the keyboarding skills. We got a computer system at the office where I worked back in the seventies, and I was given the opportunity to learn a job involving the computer. Of course, they've changed immensely since back then, as I was using a system with no mouse, black screen (no lovely graphics etc.), and boring invoicing programs etc. We finally got a PC because my daughter needed it for school, and the rest is history. My sister is very computer savvy, so she's helped me out a great deal. The internet is also a wonderful teaching tool. [someonesmom]
You are right, the internet is great for learning. [paid2write]
We started taking computer classes when i was in grade six on some macs. I guess they'd be really old now. Grade two we had some of those OLD OLD macs that use the 5 1/4 inch floppy disks that we got to play number munchers and other learning games that were available at the time. [saundyl]
I learned it from school too. My mom learned it from me. She was quite hard up when I taught her. No computers in there younger times. I literally emailed here and she replies. And I response back. We did it for like few days to get her to learn how to email and chat using the messenger too. You know what's funny? I was just one floor below where they stay. Haha. We are on the same building and that's how I taught her so I can know if she learned the instructions I gave her. I even asked her to show me how the screen look like so she has to attached some pictures to it. It was fun doing it and bonding with my mom through it. happy [jeanniemay]
How funny, you sending emails to your mother one floor below! But it was a good way for her to learn how to do it. [paid2write]
I learned my computer skills through experience. :) Just jumped right in and got learning. [luvingmygirls]
A friend of mine who went to school to learn computer got me started. I learned some from him and went on to teach myself how to build websites using HTML, building computers and a whole lot of other things to do with computers. [artguy]
I taught myself HTML and how to create websites too. I'm sure you have found a whole lot of things to do. [paid2write]
pretty much the same as you... in highschool there was an option of computer math which only the very brightest of students took - two of them went on to be doctors of computer sciences. my father gave me my first computer - it was an old tandy in DOS format. IT got me used to some things but really the language that had to be remembered for it was not easy for me. I slowly learned my way around the computer by trial and error and the help of friends giving little tid bits here and there. I do not know much really, but I know what I need to do what I use it for - if I have any questions the answers are never too far away thanks to online communities and internet searches. [Modestah]
I agree you can always find answers on the internet. [paid2write]
I figured out alot of it on my own. I took a class when I was in middle school but we just did written work I'm not sure if the computers even worked b/c they were never on so I didn't learn anything from school. If there is something I don't understand I usually look it up on the internet and figure it out from there. [mflower2053]
I don't see the point of having computers in school if they did not let you use them! I expect things have changed now. [paid2write]
I just learned by myself with some of my friends in an internet cafe. [giePortlandOR_08]
I started learning typing and that makes me able to type on a keyboard. As to how to use a computer, I learn it in office when the department I work goes computerised. [whyaskq]
I used computers a bit in elementary school, and got my own computer in 1995 when I was 13. I got a new computer with internet access in 1998 when I was 16. After that I dind't have much formal teaching in the world of computers, I just taught myself how to use my various computers. [danishcanadian]
After so many years using computers you must know a lot by now. [paid2write]
my brother he likes to teach thing to people [palina77]
hi paid2write, how's your day? happy anyway, it was during my 3rd year high that was thorough since i had it as a subject and post elementary days due to one of my classmates who have a pc back then. just a little info, according to Wikipedia.org,A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a list of instructions. for more info bout this... here's a link for you.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer thanks for posting and sharing this....rolleyes cheers and God bless... [delgar]
Cheers delgar. Thank you for the information. I agree a computer will only do as it is instructed. So we have to learn how to instruct it. [paid2write]
I learned computer in a computer center and of course with the guidance of a teacher.I don't know many more about computer . [skyblue]
There is always more to learn about computers. I am still finding out new things. [paid2write]
I still don't know very much about the computer. I do know how to log in and how to read my emails and how to participate in mylot but when it comes to anything more complicated then that I am lost. I have to ask my daughter for help quite often. For example, I wanted some music to listen to while I am on the computer but I didn't know how to find any or how to download any so I had to ask my daughter and she did it for me. She downloaded about 1000 songs for me so that I have enough music for awhile and she doesn't have to find more for me. Also if I have anything else I need to do or know she helps me with those things too. I am not computer savy and I am 51 years old and had no one else to teach me since when I went to school there was no such thing as a computer. I know my daughter took a little in school when she was young, but most of what she knows she has just learned on her own. I am not brave enough for that, I don't explore because I am afraid I will get into something that could harm my computer and then I wouldn't know what to do to fix it. [chrislotz]
You know how to participate in myLot and that's the most important thing. You are lucky to have a daughter who knows what she's doing on the computer. Enjoy all that music and happy myLotting happy [paid2write]
I had to take computer classes since I was in Prep I think. Yeah and after that, evrything came along smoothly. [beybes08]
It's good to know you learned well from you computer classes. [paid2write]
Hi there paid2write, To be honest, i learning computer because my little brother teach me. My mom bought him a computer, To make me not jealous because she bought him but not me, She told us that this computer are for "us" but still this computer is in his room LOL (anyway)...and i learn to use it to bug my brother, but he is happilly teach me one or two. My first game i play at the computer is othello (and i always won! then i learn the here and there for clicking and ask : me : "what's this for?" (click) bro: "its for....ect" me : "And this?"(click) bro: "!! ITS FOR... ect" me : " This?" bro: "!!!dont touch that...NO!!" (Sounds like Dexter and Didi, eh??. LOLlol [diansinta]
Sure did, coause i always CHEaTing!!! LOLw00t Hohoho!!!! [diansinta]
We had a commodore 64 so I learnt a little bit on that. Then in High school I learnt how to do simple programming on a 64. The internet I taught myself. I was late to get a laptop at home, and it really irritated me that I missed a lot of important info. They always tell you to learn more online or something like that when they tell you something important on tv for instance. jepp. and everything else i can teach myself online [teison2]
I think many people can learn to use the internet without being taught. I have discovered a lot and learned many things on the internet but I don't know about programming. [paid2write]
I first operated computers when i was 5 years old, Like you i also figured out how to work on it all by myself! You are correct that now we can learn how to operate it better by referring online! [uautkarsh]
I had never used a computer before and i just plunged in at the deep end and got on with it.I realised that it wasnt too bad to learn after all...and once i had mastered the vbasics i was away.I enjoyed the process of teaching myself..it was a good experience. [ruby222]
I agree that being self taught is a good thing and you will probably remember what you learned better than if you had been taught by someone else. [paid2write]
I learnt computer by trial and error method and its all my own. I never took a special couching for any of this. Infact i learnt many software programming language by self training. [pkanade]
I think you have done well to train yourself in software programming language. [paid2write]
I learnt computer myself, first I've tried to install a game when I was in kindergarten, then I sorta got an "enlightment" and began exploring computer deeply by teaching my older cousin. And I got deeper teaching by books. [amberz123]
The answer is very simple: playing games. With the first popular home computers. Those commodore that were good just to play. After that you start using other programs but instictely. Apart for a very short excel and html course I learnt all the rest by myself. [overwings]
I think games got many people interested in using computers in the early days. [paid2write]
Till finishing college i have had only the theoretical knowledge.. and i was under the impression that everything could be done.. without the knowledge of computers.. i mean, the work, in office..to find a way of living.. because i thought i my fore fathers and even my father had worked for long long time.. without the knowledge of computers, why then i must go for it.. But only, after coming out of college i did find that it is very hard to survive ( to have a job without the knowledge of computers) so.. I decided to learn all by myself, as you said by trial and error.. i have learnt using it. Even now, i am learning the aspects of html concepts and web designing on my own through online. I hope that one day or other i will learn the entire web designing and build and host a free website for my friend paid2write. Take care and have a good day friend. [saivenkaat802003]
I have managed to learn the basics of html but I don't have all the necessary skills for web designing. I'm sure you will know enough one day to design and build a site. You are right, of course, the world has changed and now almost everyone needs some computer skills to get work and survive. [paid2write]
I learnt the computer using the help features in programmes and by trial and error, way back in 1988. A friend of mine gave me a tutorial once than it was up to me to discover how I go about it. I have called him up a few times to fix my computer when in the beginning I used to delete a system file by mistakes. [ronaldinu]
It is useful to have friends who can show you how things work. I think after ten years you must know plenty by now! [paid2write]
Well, I don't remember the exact time when I got a PC for myself... probably I was 10 or something when I had a PC for myself. I did learn all by myself, I was a Compufreak from my birth(sorta), I used to go to my dad's office only for sitting on PC when I didn't have PC for me... and I got Internet just three years back. I loved to sit on Internet. When I was 10, I got a PC for me so I stopped going to my dad's place, but because I wanted to sit on Internet, I used to go my dad's office to sit on Internet. Few years later I got Internet at home, and so I stopped going to Dad's office... Now the people there around call me a visitor. Earlierly I was a regular one, bt not now.. Yeah, I learned to do everything on a Computer all by myself(or may be due to God's grace). I never learned anything - not even the graphics that I make myself now. I am lucky to have the knowledge all by myself! [Amagnimo]
Yes you are lucky, and clever, to have learned all by yourself. [paid2write]
I learned how to use a computer back in elementry school. That's been a very long time. [Nan110]
It may be a long time since your elementary schooldays, but there was no such thing as a PC back when I was at school! [paid2write]
Oh, i remember that day, a few years back, when we bought a computer...i didn't know anything about it, typing or no skill i had....Both my sons were always busy with the computer.. watching my curiosity, my younger son made an email address for me & showed how to log in....And now, i write blogs, very active & spend all my free time browsing.....I learned everything on my own.... [tingtong]
Hi, i write in Ibibo.com am very active there.....just today i started commenting on mylot. hope i'll be able to write here too... http://www.ibibo.com/tingtong [tingtong]
Yes, I had to since I had my first desktop in 2000 and then I became aware I have so many things to learn just every day and I quickly understood the internet is a very powerful source of information and this could just help me to learn things about my machines. [Cannonball]
I also discover new things everyday and am still learning about computing and the internet. MyLot is one of my best discoveries too. I joined a year ago. [paid2write]
I actually learned how to use a computer back in my high school years. I was a sophmore and took a class on computers, which was combine with a secretarial course and with a career center. [nancysoffice]
when I took my secretarial course at school, it was with a manual typewriter ! [paid2write]
When i am in my school.. there was no computer there so no computer Education also.. but after school.. i purchase a laptop ahainst my father decision.. I don;t know what i will do with the laptop.. becase before i don;t how to start a laptop lol.. i bought to show to freind and other people.. then I learned most of the things by hunslef only.. I use the laptop most od times alone.. ans i learn everyday somthing new in the laptop.. nad i think i know many things.. without any help of others [njc2009]
I think you have done well to learn how to use a laptop without ever having used a computer. [paid2write]
It's funny, when I was in high school I was the features editor of the newspaper. We had apple computers and I remember using them but for some reason I don't think it was my first experience with computers. They weren't in widespread use at the time snd I don't think I had one at home yet; I do remember using one at someone's office prior to doing it at school I just can't remember my first experience. I can remember writing a simple "program" to get a compac my mom had to play music but that was after high school. [Canellita]
We take them so much for granted now, it's quite difficult remembering a time when computers were not in widespread use. [paid2write]
Hi Ruth, I was fortunate to have a computer course when I was studying. The year was 1992, my second year in high school! It was part of the course, but now, they teach students in the elementary. I think there are even some pre-schools who teach their classes how to use the computer. The generation now should be very thankful that all the information they need is at the tip of their fingers. The downside of this, more will be lazy in doing the actual work, like researching materials at the library or interviewing experts for their school work. Sometimes, the personal approach to learning is better than the virtual one. I guess we'll find out from the mouth of these new age techie kids! Good discussion! Cheers! [zorlone]
Cheers Zorlone. I'm sure some pre-school kids do know how to use a computer. The important thing is that kids learn how to do real research on the internet and don't just copy what they see posted on websites. [paid2write]
I had some briefing from a college computer teacher colleague of mine, started using internet and am gradually and gradually by practice [kayens]
Hi there paid to write. I learned how to us ecomputer when i was in third year high school. I guess, i'm just lucky since the school i went to have already computers as subject. I only learned the basics though and not the entire task that computer can give me because of the luck of time. I have to go to the internet shops just to know how to use the internet and other things. And you are right that i can learn everything in the internet. Its just that i'm lazy these days to scan and click websites that will help me more in gaining knowledge. :-) [laedyan]
I learned how to use a computer at school. I never used a typewriter in my life. I agree once you know how to use the internet you can find and learn any information for free. The internet is a goldmine of information on any topic. [VotreAmie]
I learned computer when i was 15 so i went to computer classes and then started things to implemented so i felt so happy when i learned new things and i really did hard work. [Dasari100]
I was very curios to learn using computer when I saw my children using it. I didn't even know typing. Then one day my son made an email id for me and showed how to use it. It was easy after that. The rest I learned everything on my own. [tingtong]
