Personally, I keep my computer running for twenty plus hours daily. And, only reboot two or three times daily to keep my connection running strong. Other than that, there's always someone in the house working on the computer. And, I know what you're thinking. That's bad for the computer. And, you'd be right. I ran my last computer into the ground by leaving it on overnight while I slept. It took a year of heavy use, but one day it just quit on me. I'm trying to do things smarter this time, but it's not so easy. So how about you?
How many hours do you keep your computer on everyday? What's the longest time that you've ever left your computer on without rebooting or giving it a rest?

My computer Also runs almost 24 Hours a day.. and maybe reboot for 1 hr and here again.. running and surfing [surfville07]
Well, I'll give you the opinion of a computer technician with two degrees in computer technology. My computer is never turned off. You said that you ran your old one into the ground by leaving it on over night. Actually that is not bad for it. Actually that is the best thing for it. Please let me explain. The disks in the hard drive are spinning at around 72000 RPM. The torque used to spin up and spin down hard drives is much harder on them than leaving them spun up. Another problem is that when the computer is turned off it cools down, and then it has to warm back up. Over time the stress on certain parts of the circuit board can cause chip creep in the components and other problems that can lead to motherboard failure. Most techs now agree that leaving the computer running all the time is the best thing to do. Now, on the other side, if you tell a person to leave their computer running the problem you have is that a lot of people never reboot. I was over to a customer's house a couple of months back. Her computer was running extremely slow. I asked when the last time she rebooted was. She didnt understand what a soft (or warm) boot was. Consequently since she had heard that it is not good to turn it off, that computer hadnt been booted up for over three months. She had turned it off three months earlier because they had gone on vacation and she was worried about it running in the house with no one home. So, when she got back from vacation she turned it back on and it had been on and running for 3 months without a reboot. Wonder why it was slow? hahaha Anyway, here is what I do. I leave it run 24 hours a day. When I get up in the morning and want to check my email the first thing I do is click on start, shutdown, and restart. Then while it is rebooting and loading all those fresh ready to go resources, I put on a pot of coffee. So when I get back, it is raring to go, and the computer never cooled down. I also reboot as needed if needed through the day. [kingri]
My pc in the office is on all the day, only if there are power defection. The pc at home is on for about 8 hours a day. 2 hour at noon, and 6 hours from 18:00. [windhair]
Since I bought my computer for almost a 2 years now. I did not turn it off. Even I went on vacation to Philippines I just leave it on. [Stryker14]
I leave my comp on 24/7 as I am always doing something on it, I quite often leave it for days without rebooting it. [dangermouse]
Hi again friend, this day exseption, because I had go to sea this morning :) but the last days my computer stay 13 hours run, yes 13 hours, I know that it's bad for it, but I can't leave mylot and using net, I wake up at the 8 morning and I go to sleep at the 23 or in midnight to sleep. ~~~~~~ bacem http://extrablogspot.blogspot.com http://best-earning-from-mylot.blogspot.com [extra_man]
I leave mine on all the time! 24 hours a day without rebooting. This is bad for your computer? YIKES> Maby I should start shutting it off at night at least [jolenegreen]
I usually keep it on 24 hours a day. Occasionally, I'll turn it off at night to give it a rest if I don't have anything going. But it's not uncommon for me to have it on for a solid week or more without rebooting. It's just more convenient for me if it's on all the time ready to go. [elusivedarkness]
well, it depends, i work from home, so my computer running stay on whole the day, but for example, at weekends, if i am not at home i leave it off. * It´s no good having the computer also whole night [verdurilla]
i stay easily around 10 hours a day.i love sitting before the computer [shivendran]
Hi beautyqueen! We have two computers in our home, mine that I do all my transcription work on and our older one that my husband and kids mostly play games on and surf the net. I have just recently started leaving mine on all the time and, like you, just reboot it once or twice per day. A friend that my husband works with told me that computers are basically meant to run continuously so that is when I decided to start leaving mine on. SheliaLee [SheliaLee]
our pc is on when i am home from work, so i usually work on it for about 2-3 hours for mylot etc and then sometimes one of my kids will go on it...one likes msn to talk to her friends, the other likes webkinzworld...now hubby is looking for a new job, so throw that into the mix, so usually the pc is on at least 8 hours but while we are eating, we shut it down for the supper hour to give it a rest (seems like the fan is not cooperating for some reason...) [cher913]
My profession need my computer to be on for more than 18 hours a day. After that, I browse the net, chat , do the postings in mylot and many more . With all that, I believe I'm keeping my laptop on for more than 20 hours a day. Sometimes, when I want to download a large files, then I will start the download and go to sleep. The download would have completed when I come back in the morning. [senthil2k]
There are days when I so not shut my desktop computer down for several days at a time....but that is because I rarely use it and do not realize that someone else left it running....LOL As for my laptop...where I use the computer....I shut it sown every night before I go to bed and turn it on when I get up...it runs most of the day always.... [tinamwhite]
My PC runs about 12 hours daily.I also reboot the computer just two times during the whole 12 hours. The longest time that my computer has been on is 18 hours without rebooting even once. [rkbehera1]
Mine's on the whole time. I got three computers at home and mine is, let's put it that way, the server. So it provides internet connection for the others. The others only stay on while there's someone using them, but mine keeps on all the time! =) [centenaro]
i think the longest hour will be eight hours. i usually dont open my computer and when im done will just leave it on stand by. i usually use my computer for about four to five hours only. [kawaiijamichan]
I do the same as you and I dont turn my computer off at all but I haveto start shutting it down at night it seems htat every now and then it shuts itself down so Iam afriad I amslowly burning out the mother board and I cant get a new one any time soon. [magikrose]
My main computer i use as a server so its on almost 24/7. My laptop is down for about 2 hours a night. My main computer is about 3 years old and its stil kicking just fine. My old main computer I have to my parents and it still is kicking hard thats about 5 years old. [draco666]
i usually just leave my computer on for 2 hours everyday... i don't have much time to be on the computer as i am working... i switch it off everytime i finish using it... [lingli_78]
My computer has probably been on for a week or two straight. I am never the first person on or the last person off, so it isnt my responsibility! My brother left his computer on for a few months one time. I dont know why he never turned it off. Rebooting your computer isnt going to keep your connection strong. [MusikSpieler]
i keep my PC on for almost 24 hours a day, coz i download lotsa stuffs from web everyday! [rajsharma_85]
I used to turn it off at night. But now it seems like right after I shut it down, I'm firing it back up again to check an e-mail or respond to someone special. I really should turn it off more often, last night I was running it like mad, and it started making a funny worn out kind of noise. Then I knew it was time for bed! LOL, it will be off tonight, until my guy gets up and hits e-bay again! LOL [Katesmama]
my computer stays n 24/7, I reboot every couple of days. I have the power settings set to energy settings, and I turn the monitor off at night. My husband normally powers down his laptop and my ohter desktop. Mylaptop automatically shuts off when the lid is shut, and goes into screen saver mode, which might as well shut off, as the screen goes black, and you have to hit the power button to bring it back up. mooch [oneandonemakesix]
My computer at the office will be stay from 9 to 5 and then we shut it off! just about 8 hours. :) [nfhs79]
i never turn my pc on for 24/7. i am afraid that it might overheat and cause some electrical short circuits and eventually might cause fire breakout. this already happened in our place because of a computer that is left turned on overnight. the longest time my pc went on was 6hours after which i have to shut it down to avoid any electrical problems. i use pc from 6 am to 10 am, then turn it off. i come back around 2pm until 5pm turn it off again and finally from 7pm to 12pm. [ryanphil01]
before i'm almost 20 hours in front of my computer. but now, that i have turoial classes, i spend about 5 hours in front of my computer. before as i've said it's 20 hrs. [jeanne94668]
Hi. Usually my comps on for about 2-3 hours a day, and most of the time Im not even online, due to un-annonounced visitors or havning to shoot off somewhere suddenly... Like today my comps been on all day, the longest yet, and for nothing really..., I should really get off and restart it... [Nardz13]
I usually have my computer running for all day...wheb\never ui am at home...i ususally browse or play games in my computer and i dont like to boot up windows everytime i get to work in it....and also i put on downloads in my toorents all the time and even if i fifish them i contiue to sed them as long as possible.. [nokia6233]
on working days, if i have time, when i come back home i'll probably go online for a couple of hours and then off to bed. on weekends, if i'm not out, i'll on my computer practically the whole day. if i'm going out and if i'm in the midst of downloading something then i'll just leave it on. i usually will off my computer before i go to bed, unless i'm downloading something and it's really urgent hehe. [kevsgirlalways]
My computer is always on. Well, except for the few minutes it takes to reboot it when I get up every morning to get ready for another day. And we turn it off when we have bad storms in the area, as well. It's been running strong for five years now, other than having to have the modem replaced once when it got struck by lightning! LOL. [TeresaK]
Now this is another side to it whether to keep it on or not. I'm always after my daughter to shut it down at night and let it rest but hardly ever does so generally it's on all night. When shes logged on I'll restart or my screen runs slower, back to the question the longest is 10 days when I first got the internet as it said to leave run for ten days. [stormygrl]
about 10 hours a day and never reboot if it still run well. used to write paper assignment, browsing, and Yahoo messenger. ouwh yeah ... winamp and ativirus always run as background :D the longest time is almost 2 days without reboot, while I'm downloaded new software for edit movie from rapidshare, because lame isp ... download less than 2 hours but have to wait till the next day ... lame ... lame ... [userkasep]
winamp is software for playing music and video just like windows media player and jet-audio ... here is the official website: http://www.winamp.com/ reason I used it because it not takes lot memory usage of my pc, lot of addons, plugin, and skin. and it's free. for antivirus I used AVG free Edition http://www.grisoft.com free version aslong you register it, I updated it daily to keep my antivirus powerfull, and to keep out spyware, malware, keyloger I used SPYBOT SEEK&DESTROY http://www.spybot.info/en/ to keep my computer run smooth I often defragment my hardisk every 2 weeks. it almost 2 years since I installed my windows OS on my pc and nothing anoying found and still works like new. perhaps my infomation help you. good luck. [userkasep]
This is on allday except when i go sleep because this computer keeps annoying noise :S I know that it cost alot to keep it on for long because of electric bills, but whatever :) [ertzinas]
Hi ertzinas, you gotta do what you gotta do, right? Back in the day when my computer room and bedroom were one in the same, I had similar difficulty sleeping, because the computer light would flash blue across the ceiling in the darkness. Very spooky! Looked exactly like police car lights. Not the thing you want to wake up to at three AM. So I got in the habit of unplugging the entire machine at night. It didn't help save my computer from breaking down though. [beautyqueen26]
I leave my desktop on around the clock, and maybe reboot it once a week, though sometimes I let it go longer than that. Probably not the best idea, but it makes things a lot more convenient. I only turn my laptop on when I am working on it, which is usually only in the evening, for a few hours. At work, I turn my computer on first thing in the morning, and shut it down before I leave for the day. I think that some of my co-workers leave theirs on more, but I got used to shutting mine down every day at my last job. [scarywhitegirl]
Hi scarywhitegirl! Wow! That is some serious overtime you're putting on your computer. My computer is one of those 2002 Gateway computers and it complains if I try leaving it on for more than a few hours. What a wimp! [beautyqueen26]
Hello all i also leave my computer on 24 7 i aways on it. i;m a computer tech and it is good that you leave it on so you won't burn out your hard drive.it runs at 72000 rpms it should not almost cool down. o.k. thanks. [rodrickmoore]
