We have rather a lot of computers.
I am a bit embarrassed that there are so many.
I have a desktop computer which has windows 7 and windows xp(I wanted to try 7 before getting rid of XP in case I didn't like it).
Then there is a laptop with xp on which I found and it needed mending.
This one is a laptop too and is running linux puppy . It was another broken laptop but works alright now except it wont charge, only runs on the mains power.
Downstairs there is an apple mac that my husband was given by his work,(they offer them to the workers or throw them away if no one wants them ,when they upgrade to new machines).
There are two more desktops with xp on that are not running as there is nowhere to set them up. They were the kids machines but they are away at university and have laptops there.
Then there is my husbands laptop running vista and his netbook running XP..
Lets see thats 8 I think and then there are two old Amigas in the roof.
oh yeah there is a windows 95 machine in a cupboard and a windows 2000 machine too that is in my daughters bedroom she keeps it as it has all her old teenager diary stuff on and noone is allowed to see it. 12 in the whole house! I think that is excessive even for us.
What about you?

responses and comments:
actually i am having two computers.. one laptop and one Desktop Computer... I am having vista and windows 7 in my laptop and XP and windows 2000 in my desktop computer... actually i am only using XP in desktop computer.. windows 2000 is just extra one... no one is using that.. [padhiaranand]
Yeah XP was the best no doubt about it. I was the first operating system that I had on a computer that I called my first lol. Did you know many companies never switched over to Vista? [eponce09]
Wow! Why do you keep them all? I have a desktop and a netbook. I had a laptop but gave it to my son when I got the netbook. My husband has what he says is a portable desktop which is really nothing more than a very large laptop and he also has a laptop from work which he brings home every now and then when he has to work from home on the weekends. So, if you don't count the one my husband uses for work, which really belongs to his employer, we have three. Actually, the desktop is used mainly for us to store files that we can both use since my netbook and his laptop are linked to it. Neither of us sits at it very often. Besides, the screen looks enormous after using my little netbook. LOL [mentalward]
It is just not wanting to part with them mostly I think. We used to love the Amigas,my son played games on them and i learned to program. I think it has got a bit out of hand really. My laptops are the most used probably. My husbands laptop is for his course work (he is studying part time) and he has the netbook because he can take it to work in his motorbike bag for his studies. He keeps the apple mac because it can run the software they use in work and he sometimes does little bits at home for them. [pandaeyes]
Currently I have, a HP laptop. And I have 4 desktops. All are in working condition, but I only use the laptop. The others I have accumulated and hate to get rid of them, just in case I may need it. [sassy28]
I like our laptops because they use much less electricity. I can relate to the not wanting to get rid of the desktops feeling as it is the same for me. [pandaeyes]
woww...she must be so rich...i only have one, and sometimes i have to give up when my kids want to play the computer. if only i have three maybe i should not do it and could earn more in my lot :) [ifa225]
LOL well you would only be able to use one computer at a time so it wouldn't really earn anymore I don't think. I think maybe computers are not so expensive here. I have had one for over 25 years . People buy them second hand too sometimes so they are not always new to begin with and they make them out of parts. 5 of the computers here were free, both my laptops were as they were broken .Only one of the desktops was bought new ,already built and the windows 95 computer was second hand [pandaeyes]
firstly i like to make you to see that you have also reach to 50 posta as i am writing this one.... well, i am having my one and only one pc which i brought 6years back. it then with windows xp home edition provided by HP.(original one .....lol),now with XP professional. I wonder what do you do with yours those 12 pc's,while i am not able to maintain my single one...... [paresh007]
Yay you are at 50 posts too! I maintain them myself so it costs nothing for that aspect except maybe a few parts sometimes. I use the linux laptop for most things and the other one has my windows programs on because they don't all run on linux. Although once I can find alternatives, I wont use windows much. We can watch films if we join the laptop up to the television so it saves having to buy a dvd player and if we are watching a catchup program it is nice to see it on the television. My husband uses his for work , course work and taking to work so they are all used. The few that are not running are really sitting around in case my children want them for anything. They do seem to accumulate though. The ones in the roof are just sitting doing nothing but are quite old and don't run modern programs only games on little discs. [pandaeyes]
I have two, a laptop and A desktop. My laptop is a toshibe with Windows vista, andy my desktop is a dell also with windows vista. I need to get a new charger for my toshiba though because it broke :( talk about withdrawel. Yeah 12 is a little excessive depending on how many people are in your house, I think you can recycle the ones that don't work, and give the older ones and the ones that you don't use to a charity or you could sell them. But, I'm sure someone would like them if they are in good condition. =) [ovechkin1]
12 is excessive its true. You can probably get a generic charger for your laptop, we have them in the UK, then if the other one's charger broke you might be able to use it for that one too. Yes we could pass some of them on . Part of the problem with that for me is giving them to people that would really appreciate them. On free-cycle ,quite a lot of people are only there to get stuff to sell and that makes me uncomfortable. I suppose there must be charities that want them but you cant just take them to good will shops because they have to have them tested by an electrician ,its the same with my husbands work, if they want to pass on their machines to charity, they would have to get them tested and it is too costly so they offer them to the workers and if noone wants them, they go in the rubbish. [pandaeyes]
We had 2 computers at home...with Xp and one laptop with vista. Two computers for my 3 kids. And i am using the laptop. And...it fine in our household...not too many excess then. [jaiho2009]
That sounds like a good amount. We all used to share one about 15 years ago but as our children got older, they had more school type work that needed doing at the same time so we ended up getting more. Then about 6 years ago we bought one for my son all his own and then we were given the one from work and it has escalated quite a lot since then. [pandaeyes]
Wow, you have a whole lot of computers. In my home we have two computers and a laptop. I personally have a Compaq Presario, my daughter has a compaq laptop, and my son has a pentium 4 pc. Sometimes I have to be monitoring all three computers because I'm the only one in my household that knows how to clean and maintain their programs. I don't know how I would find all the time manage any additional computers in our home. My pc runs on windows vista and my daughter has xp. I personally want to switch to xp. [tdiamond33]
I like XP better of the two, when my husband got his laptop with vista it was very frustrating as we all used XP with little problem and vista kept getting stuck with recognising the printer or the scanner . Now he is used to it, it seems like maybe there were ways of getting teh things to work but we just hadn't got used to it yet. I stick with XP mostly but I'm having a go with windows 7 and it isn't so difficult. [pandaeyes]
I have 3 computers, all with windows xp ,one has linux with dual boot, two have vmware. [erikvail]
I like Linux, it is free for a start and there are different ones in case you don't get on with one kind. [pandaeyes]
We have two computers at my house. One computer is mine and the other is my partners. Both systems run Windows XP but if I have my way I'll be getting a new laptop soon and that computer will run Windows 7. I have a system customized I just need to get the cash to pay for it! [highflyingxangel]
I really prefer my laptop. I decided a couple of years ago to get a desktop (I saved up very hard first)because the older computer was struggling to run some software. I could have had a laptop then but I could get more power in a desktop for the same money. Then I came across a broken laptop and managed to fix it so it became mine and I found I used it a lot. Then just before Christmas this year, another broken laptop found its way to me, the motherboard had a big hole where the power connector was supposed to go. Anyway I managed to get power to it and it works ,so this is my new laptop running Linux and it is very nice and speedy and does what I need it to. [pandaeyes]
There is one computer in our house. Well actually there are 3 but the first is a very basic one which was my first ever computer when I was about 17 think and another is one I got in 2003 for college but I have not gotten round to getting rid of them. The one I have now is a dell. [donna22]
Some of ours are quite old. The Amiga's are from 1995 I think so although they work, they only run Amiga software on floppies. The windows 95 is probably about the same age but is in bits. It was resurrected once when my daughters desktop died. [pandaeyes]
As far as I am concnered, there is just on ecomputer in my home ,which is used by me. For me , I think I like computer so much. I usually turn on my computer when the time I wake up from bed. My compuer is HP which I think is well known in the world. [monkeylong]
Me too, I am terrible about computers. My laptop is turned on immediately after breakfast unless it is the weekend . [pandaeyes]
Well lets count mine up: 2 HP Personal Desktops running Vista 2 HP Touchsmart laptops running Vista 2 Toshiba laptops running XP 1 Compaq running Millenium 1 Dell Mini laptop I am a bit of a computer geek techie and am usually running different programs on different ones....lol [warmweatherwoman]
We rarely have more than 2 running at once I think. Unless the children are home(they are students so not always here). 2 of the laptops are the same model and I have a motherboard sitting in my bedroom for spares which was bought for mending one of them. [pandaeyes]
wow... you really have heaps of computers in your home... me and my hubby only have 2 computers at our house... one laptop which is mine and one desktop which is his as he doesn't like using laptop... that's all... i just bought my laptop recently and sold the previous one that i already had for almost 5 years because it is already broken... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]
You are better at controlling your space than me I think. I suppose it sounds like we have a whole room buzzing with electricity and lights LOL but we don't. I am sitting in my sons room using a laptop while a desktop is on the floor disconnected and unused. In the other bedroom there is an old windows machine with my daughters pictures and diary and whatever else she has on it but she is away till the easter break so it isn't on. The other bedroom has a desktop that is turned off at the moment. Downstairs is an apple in the cupboard in case my husband want it for some work. His laptop is in a bag for when he is home from work. There is an old machine being used as a table for the plant pots by the window(it does work) and another one in the other room beside the piano also working but not connected up. The oldest pc is in bits in the cupboard. My second laptop is sitting on the table downstairs, it has my fitness program on it and I go and work out down there in front of it sometimes. The Amigas are packed away in a big box in the roof. I think thats all of them? The kids have their laptops with them at university. [pandaeyes]
LOL Wow Pandaeyes, I thought I had a lot of computers! I have four in my apartment and two in storage. My working computers are my Dell Latitude D600 laptop (Windows XP) that someone from Florida gave me for Christmas for helping him with his statistics. I have a Compac Presario desktop (Windows XP) in the living room. I have a computer in the living room that I was supposed to fix for my aunt before she died. I can't get it to feed into any monitors, so it's useless. I also have a computer that my relatives gave me when I went to school to get my teaching certificate. I was taking Assembly Language, went into debug and something happened and now I can only use it as a DOS machine. In storage are my Tandy SL computer I got from Radio Shack around 1987, and a Mac that my friend gave me when I lived in Ann Arbor. [RobtheRock]
Thanks pandaeyes. It's a Systemax Global Pc and I didn't think about getting a video card. Although I haven't messed around in it for a while, I like to travel within my DOS machine going from address to address. My folks have a computer company and they gave it (Smart Choice 486) to me when I went back to school. It has a drive for floppy disks and a drive for the diskettes. I would have to get a CD drive for it. I love Assembly and C. I never got the hang of C++ though. They are very interesting languages. The weird thing about my computers is that when I was in Ann Arbor, I stayed in this apartment where UM students lived. Many of the students throw away their computers when they graduate and one day I went to the trash bin and saw a Mac in the trash can. I got the Mac, its copier, and the trash can. lol The strange thing about the Mac I found, is that I could use a diskette in the Mac and in the DOS computer. That's not supposed to happen, a relationship between Apple and Microsoft in 2000. Then my friend who lived in the same building, gave me his Macintosh which was a little more advanced. So I gave my Mac to my sister. I wish I hadn't because I can't do with the newer Mac what I did with the older one. My sister threw the older Mac away. :( [RobtheRock]
i only have one computer in my home. i just bought it two days ago. its a dell laptop... and i love it [brandy_wine]
Ah lovely new computers. Lucky ! See, I am sort of addicted I think LOL [pandaeyes]
i have 3 computers,2 desktop which is windows xp sp3 professional, windows xp ice,and a loptop vista. they all dual core, my desktop have asus and redfox mother board,2 gig ram,250 gig hard disk with turbo charge,64bit video card.and its almost like with my loptop.my desktop was located in my room and in my terrace, and my loptop was on my room too [janairah]
yeah i think so.that the quad core is not that better.you need too much money to make that run as fast as you want [janairah]
Wow! 12 computers?? That's a lot of computers for a home.. IN my Home we have 2 desktop computers and a laptop, all running on XP.. I believe you should sell the computers that you don't need anymore so that it won't consume space and you could get money out of it.. Technology nowadays is on hyper-drive, what's new today could be obsolete tomorrow.. [ian1979]
That's true, they depreciate quite quickly , we had a BBC model B in about 1990 that was about 10 years old I think ,it cost us £50.When they were new they were about £300.We got the monitor for £5 and they were around another £300 or some such mad price. When we upgraded, we gave it to my sons infant school to go with their other one of the same model. [pandaeyes]
Hi, I have a desktop computer. I've installed Windows Xp in it. Actually, I have been using this operating system for such a long time that I think I've gained some expertise on it. I've even written couple articles on windows xp in my blog www.selflearners.wordpress.com and I am certainly happy with the customizations I have made in my PC. I have a Nvidia Geforce motherboard and 1Gb DDR2 Ram, which I think is insufficient. I have 160Gb SATA HDD. I don't have provision for ATA HDD in my new motherboard. I have blown up several motherboards before buying this one. The OTHERBOARDs were from MSI, Intel etc. They didn't last very long. May be I am one heck of a motherboard molester. I wish I could upgrade my computer now. I want to have a high resolution graphics card with high capacity RAM. I also want another slot of RAM of 2GB and a few other gadgets. Though I can't buy them due to some reasons now, but I certainly will not abandon hope. Thanks for starting this interesting discussion God bless you [getbiswa2000]
Hello, Overclocking the motherboard means higher voltage supply to RAMs. It may reduce the longevity of primary memories, but in short term it certainly shows considerable improvement in overall performance. There are some motherboards, for example older Intel, had locked this feature for safety. But this new motherboard I have totally supports this feature, though I haven't tried it. Take care [getbiswa2000]
I have two laptops. One for office and one for personal use.My brother has a desktop, which he has been using for past 5 years.I have been using my laptop for 2 years. The desktop and the office laptop is running on XP.But my personal laptop is on Windows Vista.i ave always found windows to be more user-friendly than others.Perhaps thats something of personal choice.Well, i find your case very interesting.Perhaps, you could sell the extra ones or make some use of it, by parallel processing. Thanks! [UltimateAsoka]
We used to network the desktops so we could play family games. My son like the shoot-em-ups but I cant really get into them. I am sure there are people out there thinking , you could have them all working doing such and such a task but I would rather not have a lot of electricity being sucked up for things that are just trivial . I wonder if laptops will be mostly peoples computer of choice in the future because they are less power hungry. [pandaeyes]
We have 3 computers at home. 2 Laptops and 1 Desktop. Desktop is being used by my younger brother, whereas the two laptops are used by my sister and myself. It's just right for the house I felt. [minotaur87]
You have it just right. I am a little embarrassed by my overloaded technology. [pandaeyes]
I have 2 computers. One is a desktop that i keep for an emergency just in case my other one breaks down. The other one is a laptop that one i use daily.Take care. [geniebus]
Sounds like a lot of people have at least two. I can see it is good to have a spare especially with people doing so much online these days. [pandaeyes]
I have only one computer. It is a desktop PC...it is not a branded PC...I have assembled it myself...I bought it about 4 years back...I am using windows XP..have never using any other OS system on my PC...I wanted to use linux as it is free. My PC is low in configuration but enough for what I use it for. If i upgrade my PC i would like to install linux rather than windows.. [sumanadep]
Ours are nearly all self builds too except the laptops. I have linux on this computer. You can try a live cd of linux which means you dont need to install it at all. There is QEMU puppy linux which runs from inside of windows aswell. [pandaeyes]
we have 3 desktop computers and 2 laptops, the desktops are for my boyfriend, youngest son and oldest son,and the laptops are mine and my daughters, well my daughter does'nt have hers yet,she gets it next week for her birthday, all the computers and laptops are windows xp [doormouse]
XP is very popular. I think windows 7 is very nice too it is full of eye candy LOL. I was quite alarmed at vista which is on my husbands laptop, it seemed so confusing and different. I think whenever we must try to learn a new operating system it feels like that though. The apple OS is confusing at first glance but quite easy once you have been looking at it for a bit. [pandaeyes]
We have 3 that are running at the moment. One of Windows 7, one on XP and one on Linux. They are all high end computers (or were when they were purchased). Our family loves our computers so we also have various old screens and parts scattered around the house. [anaraith]
I like the lcd monitors the best, the CRT models are so space invasive. We have 2 CRT I think now, one in my daughters room and one I can even remember where it is. The others got given away to people.LCDs still need space of course but they can fit on the table with the keyboard if needs be. [pandaeyes]
Wow.. that is a lot!! Here in our apartment, there is one desktop, for my brother, and where our router is connected, then I have my own netbook, and my sister has her own laptop from work.. so that's one is to one. Hehehe. It's a big dent in our electric bill, but we can manage, and we don't leave any of the computers open if there is noone using them.. so there's no downloading overnight or any of those things. ehehee. [Ingkingderders]
We don't have any running overnight either. The desktop probably takes the most power. I think my laptop is about 11 volts and the desktop is something like 240v. [pandaeyes]
I have two computers in my home. Both desk top with window xp. One is in my use and other of my son. I am planning for purchasing a laptop... in coming days. [noorasie]
Laptops are very handy! We had to mend my nieces laptop, she needed it for school, luckily it was only a few files needed updating after all. Her little brother uses their desktop for practicing his maths . [pandaeyes]
What I am using right now is a laptop running on vista. I also have a desktop with XP in it. We recently tried buying this netbook off of alibaba which costs around 100dollars and it runs on Windows CE (Yeah, I didnt know there was that OS lol). It's kinda cool and cute since it's really small. I also have a sony vaio laptop which needs some mending because its screen kind of flickers and sometimes there isnt anything on the monitor. :D [calai618]
You can most likely attach the Sony to an outside monitor instead if the screen is faulty. My son just got a net-book, he is dyslexic so he is allowed to take a computer to lectures but the laptop was too big too carry around everywhere (19"),the little net-book is only 10", much more convenient. The batteries last much longer too. [pandaeyes]
I have 4 computers 1- Gaming Computer - my comp 2. my brother computer - fine comp 3. living room - slow comp [jextrick]
I guess your gaming computer has a hefty graphics card. My desktop is a nice machine but it only has on-board graphics so wont handle very graphic games. I hardly ever play them anyway so I just do without. [pandaeyes]
frankly, we only have three working computers at home -- two desktops and a laptop. i have three others, non-working, which are a carryover from a small publishing office i have since closed. of the three, the most used are one desktop and the laptop. [bystander]
well, those things are still greek to me. i just use word processing, a little into desktop publishing and simple internet surfing. i hope i learn those things soon... i think those things give me more tools to use while working on my computer... [bystander]
I have only one laptop computer in the house. It runs on windows xp. when I am at my gf house there is two, mine and hers. she has a laptop also that runns on windows vista. I did have an older modle desktop that ran on windows 98, but I got rid of it 3 yers ago. at that time there were two but now I have the only one in the house. [scififan43]
Ah I see, I was not aware of freecycle [scififan43]
Oh ,ok.it is my turn. I have three computers. One is desktop with Amd maxthon's CPU and the hard disk is 1TB,4GB memory. the other two is labtop. my OS is Vista ,windows server 2003 enterprise,Linux oh you have downstairs .that is means :you have two floors . In china if you have downstairs that is means :you are a richman.at least you are not poor. [Adam2010]
I do feel a bit like a rich person,we always lived in just one storey when I was a child and at one time we were a family living all in one room of a house with other families in the other rooms. I havent heard of maxthon before. 1TB is pretty big.My biggest harddrive is about 250gb I think. [pandaeyes]
Yes, you are blessed with many computers. Right now I only have the one, I am on now. It is a laptop with XP on it. I would like to have a desk top, but can not afford one right now. I gave my old desk top to my son. Happy posting. [jezzmay]
Yes we are lucky. I think we wouldn't have so many if we did not put most of them together ourselves. We passed a few along to neighbours in the past for their children but they were earlier on and so were game type machines rather than PC's. [pandaeyes]
we have 1 computer with windows xp and it is a new model (core2duo).. i think many computer can cost electricity. [amaturan]
Yes that's true . Although here today there is just the laptop turned on and mostly there are 2 laptops on, or a laptop and a net-book. Laptops use far less electricity. I think everyone will have small pcs or laptops as time goes by because they use less power. [pandaeyes]
I have three computers in my house. I have a Dell desktop that my daughter uses in here room. I have a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop that is currently in need of some repairs. The jack in the back of it where you plug the cord into it to charge it or run it on AC power is messed up, but I am about to get it repaired in a couple of weeks. I also have a custom built desktop from and company here in town called TECH ADVANCED COMPUTERS. They are the best computer store in town, and they also have a great service department. I would recommend them to anyone within driving distance of Pensacola, Florida. LOL [goldeneagle]
I know a guy here in town that owns a computer repair shop. I stop by and see him regularly, and from what he tells me, the power jack is one of the most common repairs he has to make on laptops, no matter what brand they are. Apparently lots of people are having trouble with this. [goldeneagle]
Well my friend. As a member of a poor family, I've got only one desktop PC or my own. It's loaded with Pentium D Processor, Gigabyte 945 Intel Chipset Motherboard, 512 MB of Ram (Umax), 80 GB Samsung HDD, Sony DVD Writer (Made in China) and I'm happy with it. happy [faridmadeabillion]
Thank you very much for your feelings to me. Have a great day.happy [faridmadeabillion]
i have 7 pc in cyber cafe all have Window Xp, with dual core system. [hotsatya]
you run them as a business then? [pandaeyes]
wow too many computers in ur house. i have only one in house and that is laptop of dell with windows xp and i using it from 3 years. my husband also uses this house after he comes home. but he will have less time to see this laptop. i will be on this most of the time in house ,as i am housewife. my husband have one desktop computer given by his office people,he uses it in office only and he never brings it to house.mostly he will do work there and if he has any other work ,he do after he comes home with this laptop and he will copy the matter to his usb. [ank_47]
That sounds like a good reliable machine. I like XP,it works quite well . I am a housewife too ,I like to mend electrical things and I work in our garden growing Vegetables too but I don't have an outside paid job anymore. When I did work outside the house, it was with photographs and mostly it was in the art department not with cameras or printing. [pandaeyes]
wow, you indeed have a lot. why dont you sell the others and you can make money out of them. we are 5 in the family, and we have 2 desktops and 2 laptops. but all of us wants to use the desktops than the laptops. [thebestmom]
Most are old and not worth much .they are worth more as spares to us than as a complete machine to someone else. I like the laptops better but they have less processing power for graphics. [pandaeyes]
I have only 1 pc and i have installed windows xp and linux in this. but most of the time i use xp. I had earlier another desktop but by the time it got slower and i had to upgrade my system.i have now a core2duo with 2gb of RAM. now again it seems slower in comparission of the systems available today. but technology is moving rapidly and i can not buy a system daily. [1anurag1]
that's true the speed of development is very fast. Linux is an excellent operating system and there are lots of versions so it is easier to upgrade by trying different versions than by adding hardware. [pandaeyes]
In my house, we have one that is sooo slow and often hangs up. It is frustrating especially when myLotting so I always ran to my mom's house (live right beside us)so that I can use a faster one. I hope that I can save enough through myLotting money to buy a new computer. [atv818]
if it is slow but it is running windows, you could try a linux operating system on it and it would whiz along. I run puppy linux on mine and it is speedy. Lucky you have your mum so nearby. [pandaeyes]
