I noticed a few weeks ago that SOME of my cd-roms will not load or anything on my computer and even if I go to my computer and try to get to them in there it does not even show that there is a disc in the drive. Well now it is every single disc!!! My mom gave me her older digital camera for me to start selling on ebay again and the disc for it will not even work so of course i cannot use the camera!! why would the disc drive stop working and not even show that there is a disc in there?? my auto play is on and everything.

i am haveing the same troubles with my computer.i cant wait for someone to reply to your discussion thank you for starting it.ill check back an see what other say.an maybe they can help us both.. [classy56]
Do you know if you have the newest driver for your cd drive & latest upgrades to your OS? If not, I would check those first. The I would uninstall and reinstall the device using the device manager. Are these manufactured disk or burned disks that you are having problems with? What OS are you running? [sedel1027]
First thing you should do is go into your bios and see if your computer is detecting your CD Rom. If not, check your jumpers on the back side of your cd rom to make sure their set right. Replace the cable going to your cd rom to see if it has gone bad. If doing all this doesn't help any, then your looking at replacing your cd rom. [freespirit7]
Computers are so frustrating aren't they. I find that they never work properly for long. It sounds like you have a hardware problem with your cd drive and will probably have to buy a new one. It sounds more likely to be that than something wrong with the disks. [michelledarcy]
Are you sure that you're CD-ROM device is not affected? I suppose, your device has some sorts of problems. Try to use Disk cleaner, uninstalling and installing the driver again and try inserting different CDs. Hope for the best. [smshasan]
Ours did that too. Something in the settings got changed. It only happened once and now we can't remember where it was. Some thing that says for it to acknowledge the drive or something. Daughter says to look in the main programs of the computer to turn it ON. Hope this gives some idea of what you can try. [Willowlady]
Maybe your cd-rom is too old. When cd-rom get too old their laser start to not work. Sometimes you can solve this problem by using a cd-rom cleaner. If you need the camera drivers, you can try to download it from the site of the camera. [RogerTheRabbit]
Assuming that My Computer displays the CD drive icon, then your system can see the drive and it is powered, so the problem is possibly a simple matter of dust and grime. The laser in the drive collects dirt from each disk that is placed into it, so sooner or later it needs cleaning. You can buy a CD or DVD cleaning disk at most electrical suppliers and many supermarkets, so I recommend that you use one and clean the drive thoroughly. The gradual failure to read CDs is typical of this problem, because as the drive gets dirtier it reads with less intensity so even the better CDs become unreadable. [Asylum]
I do live in a very dusty home!! we live on a gravel road! yuck. that might be it. i am going to take it apart and clean it . [indywahm]
To troubleshoot this, first be sure that the pc is powered down cold (unplugged). check that the IDE connector is properly/securely connected to the CD-ROM as well as the DC_power connector. Then start the computer, if you could access the BIOS SETUP you should autodetect the IDE drives, if you need more help in this, pass me a message. Then save the changes and exit. Boot up then check if the cd-rom drive is present in the My Computer. If it is, try a good CD, if the CD-ROM fails, try using a len's cleaner. For now these are the steps that you should consider doing. [AlexMasters]
May be the problem could be solved if you can clean the drive using cd rom cleaner. Or may be if the lens is troubling then it can't repaired. Though i recommend you to get it serviced by a professional. Don't open it by yourself. [ygkchaitu]
if the problem just started a few weeks ago, have you installed any new software that could be causing this? if you have you might want to try to use the system restore options of windows, try to restore to the date the drive was working fine [im2good4u]
It sounds like your computer isnt picking up your driver for the disc. Im no expert but I dont think its really a big problem or expensive to fix. All I can say if you want it done right go to a professional. [7nicole1]
How old is your disc drive? I had the same experience before and when I took it to a technician, he said that the drive just reached it lifetime. Apparently, older drives have a maximum number of spins or operation or something like that. [ricsem]
i think ur cd-rom is busted already.. even if your computer still detects the drive.. its already damage... co'z i experience it like what u've experience..... heres my advice.. buy a new cd-rom drive... [phayeth]
Try unplugging everything for 30 minutes then plug it back in. I have run into a lot of problems of this nature and this will help them most of the time. It allows the computor to resest it's self. [CatEyes]
I had that happen when I used my HP. My hubby added another memory card and a brand new CD-rom. They were both really easy to install. It fixed both problems. I know the kodak program can be downloaded from their site if you need one. Good Luck! [Connie1013]
There is no problem with your cds., the main problem is with your cd-drive. Your cd-drive lense is damaged, the lense is used to read cd-roms from the drive. I am 100% sure that your drive lense is damaged. You have two options for your problem: 1) Repair your drive lense for any computer technician or 2) Purchase a new cd-drive. [gabbuonline]
sometimes i get a similar problem. My old cd drive is not working now, it gave me lot of trouble. When i connect the power cord of the ide cable to it, my system refuses to boot. I am really womdering what has happened to it. [audacious2020]
i think this can a problem with cd rom or its driver because the computer is not detceting the cd rom. you can install the driver again to run the cd rom [mitsubishi]
Some drives are like that. I have a sony cd rom and used it for less then a year and it won't read some of the cd,vcd, dvd. until one day like your drive it won't read anything. Got another drive and been using it since. Not sure if its due to not using it regularly or used it to often. But this 2nd one seem to be working very well. I think there's a problem with the lens. Sometime if I was able to access a cd or anything and remove it put in another disc, it will still show me the previous disc's lable but it won't show anything from the new disc. [omega007]
this problem needs some troubleshooting, the first thing u can check that u have the right drivers for the CD drive, next is u need to check whether it is conflicting with any other device, if all these things are fine, then u need to open the computer casing can inspect the power supply connections & datacable connections that are tight or not, if still no luck then i think its time to buy a new one... [vickygosar]
All these depends upon the computer configuration also.. If that is reason first upgrade your computer.. It may be effected by virus regarding showing of disk drives in my computer.. Are you getting any error while opening My Computer or Disk Drives from My Computer.. [cliks4fun]
Don't get mad, it's time for you to get a new computer and throw the old one on the river or somewhere or just sell it on ebay... [sazkul]
I think there is a problem in your cdrom laser head (reader lens). Try cleaning your cdrom using a head cleaning disk. Still if you find the same thing happening, i am sorry to say that you have to go for a new drive only. Hope your problem is solved easily. [krishnafour]
Really but only difference is that computer has not its own brain, otherwise it really made the mad of all creation of god on the earth. We have exampl of that within a few years how is it famaous arround the world is not it [rajesh_kumar8d]
to make the correction you have to go through the BIOS, and chk that through auto detection means bios is detecting your cd-rom or not, if your cmos bios battry has been discharge thn change it, it may be correct your problem. [rajesh_kumar8d]
i also strongly believe that the problem is not with cd's but ur disk drive. if you have checked all factors like whether it is recognized by bios, whether its a cabling problem or a problem caused by its jumper setting. iam 100% sure that your lense has been damaged. i got the same problem when i was using my old system. my service pesonal adviced me to buy a new one rather than mingling with that drive. [thelionking]
I worry about the day my computer finally decides to die...currently my disk drive gives me issues too..sigh [ArsonCuff]
I think you can see in the monitor if the icon of CD driver appear, then your system can see the drive and it is powered, so the problem is not from the cd driver the possibility problem come from dust and grime, the laser in the drive collects dust from each disk that is placed into it,and sooner or later the cd needs to clean. You can buy a CD or DVD cleaning disk at the electrical suppliers and supermarkets, so I recommend you to use one and clean the drive thoroughly. The gradual failure to read CDs is typical of this problem, because if the drive gets dirtier when reads with less intensity it will not pass the reading, although the CDs is good it will become unreadable [unisis]

have you tried putting in another disc...like a vcd (movie) or anything not from your collection? like a new one?? if you tried it and nothing happens still, then your cdrom's got a problem..try cleaning it.....if it wont work, u may need to have it repaired..or get a new one..or you can try putting your cdrom in another else's pc. if your cdrom will work with their pc then the problem would lie on your pc...if that will be the case, you need to reinstall your OS...;p if it wont work with their pc, then have your cdrom repaired...aight??!! dd i help? hehehe [weehihi]
It sounds like to me, that the optical drive is dead. There was a recent study by google, that says, pretty much they can not and do not have a defined reason for drive failure. They found some supporting elements that help keep it healthy, or unhealthy. But no smoking gun. They say the biggest factor in drive failure they have seen is age. That the older it is the more likely it is to fail. It could have just died. The other thing could be. Since it was slowly dying is dirt on the laser lens, might want to crack open the CD-ROM and dust the thing that looks like a fish eye. That is the lens, use canned air, and a microfiber towel. [thereviewer]
I encountered the same problem as you too and I think it could just be that your cd rom is spoilt. Cd rom drives aren't the most reliable equipment around - especially so if you didn't get it from a "reputable" brand to start with. If none of the disks works, then it is almost definitely the culprit. You would need to change it and it may cost $30? Depending on brand and your country. [lordwarwizard]
Like others here, I think that you are going to have to replace your CD-rom drive. I'm sorry that it broke down :( But at first, I was afraid that you just had some CD's that had gone bad, and to me (at least for myself) that would be worse. I do have some CD's that my drive won't recognize at all, and I realized belatedly that they are my *only* copies of pictures that were very dear to me, so now I've just lost those memories forever. At least if it is all CD's that your drive won't play, we know that it must be your drive, so if you get a new one I'm sure that all of your CD's will be working again! ^_^ [shywolf]
It may be problem with your cd rom otherwise cd are demaged so you yold that even you can't connect digital camera so problem with cd-rom change it [hackman]
It may cause for some hardware problem. You should check the cables.or the drivers are not installed properly.the firm ware of the cd rom is not working properly.also you should check the boot setting.may the cd rom and harddisk are all in master.change the cd rom to slave.use harddisk as master. [its_pallab]
I had that problem before. Had to replace the CD-ROM. Now after one year it's happening again. CD cleaner doesn't help. I guess I'll have to buy another CD-ROM. Darn it! [wisedragon]
Well first try to put the disk in cd rom go to my computer check if your cd rom drive shows anything in it 1)if it shows double click on it if it openes u get all done a)if it doesnt openes may be the disk is bad if this happenes with every disk your cd rom have been to its age and its time to replace 2)if your cd rom doesnt show anything you need to replace cd rom or check it by proper hardware person 3)it may also be true that your cd rom data cable have been bad if so and if you know u can replace it do it otherwise ask someone from computer field [aniket0]
i suggest you better get ur computer formated and cheked by some professional rather then trying doin r&d urself. [mywords18]
well there may be two resons 1. you have accidently disable your cd rom. Go in device manager and check it 2. May be power or data cable is not properly attached to the device. open you system plug off cables then plug them again or change them with other device. 3. If still it is not working then it is burned and uyou have to buy a new one. [naveeed]
Hi: assuming that your OS detects your ODD,there are a couple of things that cause this situation. One is if you have installed or uninstalled a media or photo manangement program, and you have Roxio burning software installed, your ODD might not work. Roxio has a patch file for this at their web site. Secondly your firmware may need to be updated. You will find firmware @ manufacturers web site, unless you have a DELL then get it from DELL web site Roxio patch is @ DELL web site also. If you have done these things and it still doesn't work it is a problem with UPPER and LOWER filters in REGISTRY.Go to Microsoft KB to find the article on how to do this,it is simply removing filters from registry. Also you can click TROUBLESHOOT button located in ODD properties in Device Manager. Good Luck [loaninfo]
