In my opinion, its not any bad to have two OS. The first thing u should do is to keep these OS in two diff drives. Do not make them work together or run both in same time. I am using linux and win 7 in same system and do not face any problem. Both works well. [delbin]
thanks friend for additional and valuable input, its feel great to learn good things from mylot friends. I appreciate your feedback on this thread. [life8118]
Well, as long as your computer has the capability to support the operating system you install, you can install how many ever you want. I have tried putting four OS's in my PC which has 8 GB of RAM - Windows 7, Windows XP, Linux Ubuntu, Fedora. Your previous PC might have had low configuration. But, now in the system in my room - which has 4 GB of RAM, I am running Windows 7 and Linux Kubuntu 9.10 lollol! [kar295rocks]
shocked that is a whole lot of operating systems in a single computer. [voldrox]
Yes we can have 3 OS maximum in a PC.Then for using three OS your RAM should be of 1GB.Then it will be of perfect and will be no problems. But using 2 OS is the best.First while installing different OS ,drives should be different. Then there will be something like primary and secondary partition. Generally one primary partition will be there in every PC.I mean the at the very first you will have this. Then if you go for another OS in addition then make another drive as primary partition. This can be done by Norton partition manager. Partition matters in installing different OS.I think it will help you.Take care..happy [Gany15k]
thanks Ganyhappy [life8118]
Hello, Its neither good nor bad. It actually depends on your configuration. You should refer to the Operating System manual for the requirements. There is no limit of number of operating system you can have in your machine. Even when you are running Windows Xp in your computer you are actually using two operating systems. One is DOS, the disk operating system which takes care of the booting process, and the other is Windows Xp itself. I have used two operating systems Windows Xp and Linux. Linux doesn't recognize the drives formatted in Xp and it needs to be installed in a different drive. The main problem in installing different kinds of operating system is that they makes your system slower. The reason is that the operating system needs to be copied to your root directory for optimum performance. Now if you use two different operating systems you usually have to install them on different drives, which will invariably end up in slower performance of either of them. If one is installing windows 98 and windows xp in the same machine, that doesn't affect the performance much, as both of them can be installed on same directory. But that is seldom the case. Not many people would want the combination of two different versions of same operating system. I hope this information would help. God bless you [getbiswa2000]
yes, very true, i feel this platform is great, so is the mylot friends as they are really very very helpful and giving the best of best as they respond to discussion, take any topic, i always feel so good after learning and understanding on many topics..' [life8118]
vm ware is a ok way to go if you just wonting to test a os [micke31479]
thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
ya its not really bad to have two os in your system... if u have installed a good antivirus which has latest updates.... your pc will work fine... other wise u may have problems with your pc...... [kooltiger]
thanks friend. [life8118]
hi there life8118, having two operating system in one computer would only slow your computers performance. I suggest you use one operating syste only.. Well for me two operating system in one computer does not work at all for me and has no advantage. I better have a desktop and a notebook use at a time lol..happyhappyhappy [dorothy09]
Hi friend, yes, even i felt exactly same way, as in my previous PC i installed 2 OS, but i had very bad experience, so right now i am having only One OS. but after starting this discussion i came to know if Ram size is big we can install as many we want to install. [life8118]
My host machine runs GNU Debian/Linux only and a virtual machine software is installed on Debian. My winXP OS is then installed on my virtual machine. I do most of my work using Debian 'cos it is immune to the prevalent win virus/trojans. When I have to swtich to Winxp. I start my virtual machine(vmware) and then run winxp on virtual machine. IMO, it's troublesome to install 2 OS on the machine. It's a plague to switch between the operating systems. And you are bound to bump into the one-system-ruined-by-the-other-system thing. I will cost your time to fix it. If you are really tempted to use more than one OS. It's strongly recommended to have only one OS installed on your host machine and then install the other systems on the virtual machine that runs on your host machine os. [zausiu]
thanks for sharing your views on this thread so your verdict/view :one will be best. [life8118]
Two Operating systems in one PC would slow your PC life---i installed Linux in one drive and Windows in another---the resultant was a disaster---the linux ate up my hard disk upto fifteen GB so learnt my lesson and i would never try to install Linux in parallel use with Windows evilgrin.By the way what were the two OS you had in your old system blink [sunnycool]
hey sunny... you are right on that.. if you having no need then there is no meaning of two OS... for example if someone learning linux then he can have two os like xp and linux but expect that one OS is more preferable... well i am having vista in my laptop and installed second os windows 7 just because I always like to stay touch with new technologies.happy [padhiaranand]
you can have two os on your computer, but you have to make sure one you have enough space and enough memory to run both. the worst case it would run really slow [syankee525]
hi friend, thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
Hi life, i have always had two operating systems in my laptop, Vista and Linux hardy-heron, the use of one operating system doesn't effect the performance of another operating system, the problem could come if while typing for the grub loader in the linux for the start up options for choosing between the operating systems, i don't know much about them, my brother did all that, one day by mistake when i switched on my laptop i could only see linux and no vista! w00t .. then we had to enter in linux and type in the grub loader again, then we could see the option for starting in vista again, gosh that was scary, i am not very comfortable with using linux and there was no ways i wanted windows removed from my computer, your computer could have got slow coz it's hardware was getting old and outdated.? [voldrox]
I don't think it's bad, but for me one was enough. You can use a variety of operating systems in the operating system which are running. When installing many systems for changing course there will be inconvenience because you have to reboot your computer and select the operating system will be used.happy [May2k8]
Hi May2k8, thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
I used to have 2 OS in my old computer, Windows and OpenSuse (Linux), because my family members use Windows and I prefer Linux, there was no problem is using 2 OS because in old pc (still using it) I use 1gb memory. But now a I have purchased another only 1 OS is there in both PC. [arun175]
Hi Arun, thanks for sharing views on this thread.. [life8118]
happySweetie, i have only one. I never used two before. So whether it is good or bad, i surely won't know. TATA. [saphrina]
happyNo, my dear BB. This one is mine.devil Maybe you should make sure to GGOOGGLLEE that again. whistleSorry, i won. [saphrina]
hi,friend,it is difficult for me to answer..but i came to know many issues through your discussion as i have gone through all the responses to this thread.Have a nice time. [umadper]
Hi friend, thanks for your input, i am happy that my discussion helpful to you.. [life8118]
I think it is good when you have sufficient hard disk capacity .. and atleast 2 GB of Ram then it working good..otherwise it may slow your computers speed .. i think..only only one OS is sufficient but mostly people install 2-3 OS.. have a nice day and keep mylotting always..happy [anurag3786]
Hi Anurag, thanks for sharing views on this thread, i appreciate your feedback. [life8118]
Two operating system in a single PC. It depend how the two systems are installed. Normally if OS are installed properly then it does not create any problem. In the PC of home use two OS are not necessary but in some special reason two different OS are installed. When any software has not computability with particular OS then to use that software we install the completable OS. Some version of software are compatible with certain OS and if we don't have the completable software we use multi booting system. I have tried three OS in a single PC. [Aaleexix]
w00tcheering thanks for this nice and funny image. [life8118]
ha ha...lol so you get inspired for this discussion by our yesterday's discussion... as i told you yesterday i am using two operating system from two years... and till now it is working very smoothly.. one of my friend having 3 in his laptop... so its totally depend on PC's configuration.. i have installed windows 7 and vista two latest OS.. so you can.happy [padhiaranand]
thats good life ..... i think you have collected lots of information on this by this discussion... good going.. yes RAM is the most important thing for the speed of your computer.. happy [padhiaranand]
I think it`s fine to have two operating systems on the same computer as long as it can take it... I only have windows XP on my computer because my computer isn`t quite the best there is... But i doubt i would get two operating systems on it anyway , maybe upgrade to windows 7 but i wouldn`t get two of them... Regards [GoldenWing]
Hi friend, thanks for sharing views on this thread.. [life8118]
I have only one OS installed as I don't need more. I sometimes use a live CD, like Knoppix or Ubuntu for example. Another options is to do virtualization (run an OS inside another OS, as if it was an application). It basically depends on your needs, but there is nothing bad in having installed two OS. [techgurl]
hi friend, thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
For me it's not at all any problem if you install more than one OS.. I had 3 OS at one time in my system when I was used to confuse the system..(lol). not any problem what soever.. but yeah if you don't have any necessary avoid another OS installation as it will eat your hard drive and boot time only nothing else. You can use VMplayer instead of installing another OS. [lovedude]
Hi friend, I have some question on this topic: like you said you have 3 OS installed, so my questions are what are most important points to consider when installing more than one OS in computer. what is meant by VMplayer??? [life8118]
i am not very skilled at computer, but i dont think its available to use the two operation systems at the same time; there might be conflicts. Even though you can install them it may be not working as well as that of one system. [kellysun]
Hi friend, thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
Well First of all two OS eats a lot of space and you might really face some problem if you install them on same hard drive that was only partitioned, my suggest is that in order for the two OS run perfectly is that you install them on separate hard disk and not on separate hard drive then run one the OS in raid 0 this would serve as back up and will run automatically once the other OS was corrupted. Remember having two OS is good in case there you have encountered a problem in your other OS that is what others purpose in installing two OS. [newuserptc]
Hi friend, so most important point if we install two operating systems that should be in different drives. [life8118]
Hi there!! Actually is not bad to use two OS in your computer as long as you have a big capacity of hard drive. Sometimes you want to try other OS like windows 7 or windows XP, You can install these in your computer. I am satisfied with windows XP in my computer. Have a nice day... [___SKY___]
hello friend, nice to meet you!! In my PC i install one Operating System,I haven't faced any problem in my computer. In my opinion,One computer ought to install one Operating System, becuse it is not useful,I just use one Operating System everytime. If you install two Operating System in your PC,it may make your PC very slow. [gcarmen]
Hi friend, Welcome to mylot. same here nice to meet you..happy thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
1. it's nothing 2. I have two Operating system on my computer,one is Windows 7,another Ubuntu. [cn_meme]
thanks for your input on this thread. [life8118]
My friend advised me before to install a second OS on my PC which have an XP OS but i haven't tried it because I'm contented with the features of Windows XP and i think it's enough for me to have one only. [basqui]
thanks for sharing views on this thread.. [life8118]
Hi, I think keeping two operating systems do not harm the computer. You can actually put it in two diffenent drives, and operate each one seperately. So, even if you face problem in one of them the other works properly. Keeping only one operating system may cause u loose valuable data, if in any case u need to remove it. Also, it will be better to keep operating systems from two differnent manufactures e.g Microsoft Windows, Sun's LINUX. [vishalshah852004]
Vishal thanks again for this valuable feedback, but how server plays important role i mean i know most of people don't install the original version of OS and they off the security, correct me if i am wrong, as i am understanding all these terms. So if some one is keeping 2-3 OS in the system, what points according to you are really important.. [life8118]
Whether two operating system in computer, good or bad? I don't think it is a good idea. Its like run you car with two engines. In my opinion one would create conflict with the other. Your computer would end up in a mess. Though it can be done it's a definite no for me since your computer would end up running slow. Here is an article I found regarding this issue, which might interest you.http://www.almufaddal.com/how-to-remove-one-operating-system-from-a-dual-boot-windows-xp.html It is sometimes useful to have windows xp & Linux operating systems to be installed on the same computer. But suppose if you have 2 windows xp copies on the same hard disk, than you will see that the system performance is rather slow . Now suppose if you want to exclude or delete one window xp copy and leave only one, here are some easy steps to be followed: When you restart your system, you will get choices of 2 operating system, it is up to you choose the one you want to keep installed on your machine. How many Operating system you installed in your computer ? I have only one operating system on my computer and that is windows xp. [ronaldinu]
Hi friend, good feedback. thanks for sharing views and link on this thread. [life8118]
I have heard of this before, but I have decided to just stay with the one system. At present I am using XP as this came installed on the computer and as far I am concerned, will work best with the memory, processor and hard-drive size. I wouldn't like to try and install a second, different system on here. happy_Derek [derek_a]
Hi Derek, thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
I always have two OS on my computers. If you have two different HDs, then it's preferable to put them apart. However, you can always make a partion of your HD and use them as you wish. I usually use: - Linux: cause' it's stable, easy to do scientific works, easy to deal with long list of archives, ... - Windows: there are programs that only run on windows, graphic tools, etc... I never had any problem. I'm doing this for almost 10 years. Perhaps, at the beginning, I didn't know for sure how to install and operate Linux, so I made some mistakes, but it was my mistakes and not from the OS. [neutrinomuon]
I don't know if I answered your question... If not you can always contact me. Cheers. [neutrinomuon]
Last year I lost Windows on my computer and as I was sick of it anyway I decided to install Kubuntu. This was just before the latest release, so I installed Windows XP again just until the release. I considered keeping both but then decided upon installation of Kubuntu to get rid of Windows completely as I was having a lot of browser freezing problems beforehand. I now have none of those issues at all. I have installed WINE so that I can run Windows programs, but it does not accept all of them for some reason. This is not a big issue for me as I still have a laptop as well which has Windows XP on it. [RawBill1]
yes, i seen but i ask from those friends when i know that friend will give me feedback as some members not show again after commenting first time. so i don't ask. thanks again, this discussion is really helpful to me as i got very good feedback and good comments on this thread. (very informative thread) [life8118]
Why? It can be done but you need to set it up very carefully. Otherwise they will conflict with each other. Unless there is a special reason why you would want to run 2 different OS, it's more of a headache to maintain. Just my humble opinion. [Tallygirl09]
Hi friend, I appreciate your feedback on this thread, but i want to understand more as what to do to: set it up very carefully?? which precaution according to you need to be taken. [life8118]
I used to have ubuntu and windows XP on my old computer . Now on teh new one I have windows 7 and windows XP. I wouldnt bother with having XP except that we have some software that needs it and wont install on 7. My son has Vista and XP on his so that he can run all his computer games as some dont like vista and some seem better on it. [pandaeyes]
Hi friend, thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
yes their is no problem in having two os but their is some problem like decrease in space and slow down the speed of your computer but it's on you how you want. [bavneet]
Hi friend, yes two OS, more space.. thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
in my opinion having 2 different os installed on your pc is ok and useful!!in fact i have 2 different os on my pc too!!the first is linux based such as ubuntu and the second micorsoft's os as xp!!in some cases is comfortable because for many operations linux is ok or better but for some others you can use windows as well especially if you need some programs or others things typical and created just fro the windows os!! [tonyllenium]
Hi tony, good feedback, thanks for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
There absolutely no problem until any problem happen with one of the OS. rofl I am using Windows Vista and Mandriva Linux in my laptop. (Sony Vaio VGN-CS215J/Q Core2Duo T6400, 4GB RAM) Better you Install earlier versions first and newer versions next. Windows first and then Linux. Because windows normally don't mind any other Master Boot Record exists or not. But many Linux distributions identify windows or other Boot Records and add them to the OS choice menu. There are some other methods to Install OS Virtually in a PC. I have "Sun Virtual Box" installed in my Windows Vista. I Installed Windows XP and Windows 7 trial in Sun Virtual Box. So From my windows vista I can start windows XP/Windows 7 Virtually and switch between Vista and Xp with a mouse click :). I can shut down XP or Win 7 from my Vista. However to transfer files in between the Main OS and Virtual OS the network drivers should work properly. Peace. [Harley009]
Hi Harley, this is really good feedback on this thread, thanks a lot for sharing views on this thread. [life8118]
There is no harm in two different OS in your computer. I am rather using three OS like Linux, Windows and Ubuntu. I use it and have no problem at all. The operating system controls your computer's tasks and manages system resources to optimize performance. A multi-user operating system allows for multiple users to use the same computer at the same time and/or different times. Don't worry go ahead and use it. [airakumar]
Hi Airakumar, thanks for sharing feedback on this thread. [life8118]
Multiple operating systems in a single PC does not gives any advantages for general users. Becoz one operating system is enough to do daily required work done. But it gives pleasure by telling friends that you have multiple operation system. I am giving here a link from there you can download the Boot manager and can manage multiple OS. http://www.osloader.com/ [Nazm110]
Great site Kobida-da. Quite useful. I am presently working on algorithms and operating system. Hey, is there any software that can simulate Linux commands in Windows environment? If you have anything of that such, please send me the link. Welcome to myLot [getbiswa2000]
