What Anti-virus Do You Use On Your Computer

My anti-virus is running down. I don't like McAfee. Is there a good one that is free? McA is like $79 a year and I'm not sure it's all that great. Some people say there are free ones out there, but how can they be free? How good are free ones? Do you know some good cheap ones. Esp. things that go well with Earthlink and Microsoft programs. Thanks!

responses and comments:

You can use ESET NOD. Its very good and easily updates everyday. There are many free ones but nothing gives best protection compared to paid ones. [aeroomkar]
I'm use a avira free edition.because i think it's very secure and free for update. [fadloli]

well if you want a good free one I suggest Avast which just seach on google and you can find it. I do use McAfee and its alright but I got the whole thing completely free off a torrent website so its pretty cool. [Eric7990]
norton is goood too there are so many anti virus software programs! [icepalace]

I have TREND on one and I forgot what I pay a year. On another I have AVAST and that is what a few of my friends have also and it is free. [muscles4me]
Do you go to AVAST.com or how do you get it? [writersedge]

I use Norton. It's not free but I have never had any problems at all. [Grandmaof2]
I've heard Norton is good, but may not be the best for Earthlink and I don't know why. [writersedge]

i use symantec on my two pc's it never give me problem just update regularly . [freelink]
That's great! How much does it cost? [writersedge]

norton is one of the better ones i got macfee free when i signed up for aol yrs ago but expired then bought it still looking for a better one though if you google might find some highly recommended anti virus software-i will ck with some friends family members for you!mca can be a problem at times-norton is good- [icepalace]
A friend (Pops) told me that Norton plus Earthlink is bad news for some reason, but I don't know why. [writersedge]

There's a few free ones, of course they won't give you the same protection as the ones you pay for, but it's better than nothing. I've heard that one of the best is Avira, if you go to their website, they have a free version which you could try. A few friends use it, so if you like it, you could buy it, I think it goes around the same price as Mcafee. [forums101]
How do you get there, do you go to avira.com? [writersedge]

I use Norton and it's been just great. The cost is $50.00 per year. I will renew the agreement this year again once it's due for renewal. I would highly recommend Norton. [carolbee]
Don't know anyone on Earthlink right now. Sorry I can't help. I know Norton works extremely well with AOL. In fact, there was an attack on my computer last night and Norton blocked it and notified me. Whew! [carolbee]

I have used many of the antivirus software out there at one time or another over the course of many years. My previous one was AntiVir which is great, and free, even caught stuff other pay services missed. Right now I am evaluating the new Microsoft Security Essentials which is free as well. So far, no infections found, it even scans for spyware. [mrdos910]
Do you just put antiviral.com on the computer and it goes to the site to download? [writersedge]

as regards anti-virus you can check something about avg anti-virus and nod too!!So there are both such as free edition and fee ones so you can see which one it is suitable for your needs!! In addiction i think bitdefender can be also a good choice...so try them!!even if normally mcafee work as a normal anti-virus but surely if you don't like it you can check these other ones!! [tonyllenium]
That's a few people for avg now, do I go to avg.com and download or how do I find it? [writersedge]

ok personaly i use avast home and it is awesome it finds all viruses even on websites. it is totaly free. you just register and then you just need to reregister every year. it updates daily and did i mentioned it was free?? [xmlukax]
That sounds very cool. Do I just go to avast.com and it will upload for me? [writersedge]

In the market, there is lot of anti virus software available and we can also download some free version from the net.I think it is better to purchase a licensed version of anti virus software,so that we can update it with out any problem.I am using NOD32 anti virus software in computer for the last three years and this software is working very finely for me with out any problem.I have also tried softwares like Norton and Kasper sky,but after the installation the system performance is very slow,so i uninstalled it. [sreejithsreenivas]
That's what I've notices, too. McAfee is extremely slow, esp. just before renewal. It's also supposed to update at 2 or 3 in the morning and it still bothers me to update all the time. Plus anything I add from it is a real pain, popups to ask me if I really want to do something every time I try to do something, so I had to delete the spyware, it was driving me crazy. Thanks, that's a few for Nod now. [writersedge]

i think you can use avira free edition.it's good and you can update with free.i'm use avira for anti virus on my laptop and i can update every time. [fadloli]
Thanks, that's a few of you for that one now, it sounds like a good one. [writersedge]

McAfee is good i don't know y u r facing problem..go for antiavira [suprabha_77777]
go for this http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html k have a great day [suprabha_77777]

Happy new year to you first of all the Anti Virus is same like the goverment regulation , it will set up a rules and orders where you need to get stick with it and which will slow your work . as every thing requires stamps attistation approval ...etc the anti virus cant give you a % 100 grantee that you wont get infected with a virus ... same like the gov they will provide you with the police service ,, also they dont gaurantee you that you will be 100 percent secure . but you know the funny things these days that Mca & Ant even AVGI ..all of them are having a developer team ,,.. they will devlop a new virus and issue it then later on they will announce that they found the solution for it .. its like marketing to make sure all the people will always have to buy this medicine . and regarding your inquiry if their is any free software ... if you will make a good search .. you might find a pirated copy ( u can use torrent....etc ) which all people these days are doing . take care N [nedallo]
Interesting take on this. I never thought that they might actually be contributing to the problems to keep going. I'm not sure I want to pirate a copy of things, though, thanks and take care. [writersedge]

Hello writersedge,,, My laptop is NOD32 antivirus. i choose this application because this antivirus good. Before i used NOD 32, AVG is my choice. But the antivirus doesn't good either i have update the aplication but still can't be protect the system very well. So I dedicide to choose NOD32 to protec my system, and until now the system just fine and never attack by virus again. [teecoz]
That's quite a few of you for NOD32, how do I get it? nod32.com ? How much does it cost or is this one free? [writersedge]

I use AVG free on my laptop. It can be downloaded free from the cnet.com downloads page. AVG has provided protection to my lapotp eversince. Of course one has to surf the web safely to complement anti-virus programs as there is no program that protects 100%. [epineda]
Very true and thanks for telling me how to get it, too. [writersedge]

Well, currently i'm using Bitdefender as my anti-virus for my computer and it has many advantages than disadvantages. It is also rated as the number one most used anti-virus in the world. So i would recommend using it. [EvilSkyBoy]
Most used anti-virus in the world? Wow! How do I find it? Thanks! [writersedge]

I've got one on each computer. I got AVG Anti-Virus Guard in my living room eMachines PC, but all it does is scan my files. Ever since then, I rarely run into viruses anymore except those that have already infected my hard drive files until I find some disinfectant programs to clean them off. I also got McAffee already installed on my newly-opened Acer Aspire Revo portable nettop. Speaking of my files that are infected in my hard drive, at least it doesn't delete them unless I decide to do that. It quarantines my infected files. Last weekend i've been trying to backup one of my older hard drives using ImgBurn and compressing them with IZArc, and it took ALL FRIGGIN' WEEKEND PLUS MONDAY! That includes stopping and quarantining the infected files in there even while I was asleep, and it STILL didn't turn out right! Instead of forming into an .ISO file, it split into different 4.7GB files and didn't join itself automatically! All that time wasted for nothing. Back to file synchronization with other hard drives to save my files instead. surrender [DuoMaxwell]
Frustrating, isn't it? Thanks and take care. [writersedge]

My coputer came with MacAffee. I disabled it and downloaded AVG free. I don't like macAffee. It interfers with my web browsing sometimes shutting down my computer for no reason at all. When I got AT&T ISP again MacAffee came with it. Again I diabled it for the same reason and continued to use AVG free. When I started having trouble with files moving and disappearing and other weird things happening, a friend told me about Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials. Both are free and much better than AVG. I haven't had any trouble since I installed Microsoft Secruity Essentials. You can just put either name into a search engine to come up with a download site. I don't know if a paid anti virus is any better or not. Every paid one I've ever had has interfered in some way with my internet connection and sometimes even with programs on my hard drive. I'm not a computer expert, but that's been my experience. [thebeaddoodler]
How do you disable McA? [writersedge]

There are some good free anti virus that you can use, i recommend AVG, Avira, Microsoft Security Essential (MSE) and bitdefender. These anti virus good for the update database and also their quality to detect threat from virus, worm, spyware or malware. But as you know that free anti virus is only use for home computer and the access to other facility is limited, such as prevent attack from hijacker and more security internet option. But First, we should make separate partition between windows and other program. It will give benefit if your computer infected by virus then your other file will note get infected too. Because most of virus are attacked windows file and the registry. Then I use avira free edition in my computer, and support it with hijackthis application to detect any hidden malware (if you know you can find the malware and erase it manually from the registry)in my computer and also use free firewall. That will give benefits and more protection for my computer. So, i don't need to buy the paid version of anti virus. thank [wandry]

i just use avg antivirus on my computer. there's an option there that you can download it free or if you want a premium one, there's a payment. but i just use the free one. its easy to use and there's free regular update for patches against new viruses. [yushen1008]

I have tried McAfee before and its quite heavy. It slows down my computer. I have also used other premium anti virus but same thing. Now, I am using a free anti virus that was recommended to me by a friend who is quite good on computers. The anti virus is AVIRA, its really light yet very effective based on personal experience. I have been using it for a year already and never encountered any problem so far.happy [jpso138]

I use AVG Anti virus free version and I don't have any problem with my computer speed up to now. But for local cleaning I prefer to use SMADAV which is also available for free. [dwightsunee]

for me i use ESET NOD32 i got it free from the net but the free ones need to be updated soon to provide you with maximum security.. or try : AVGanti virus (very user friendly) Kaspersky ( i had i little prob in with my files get deleted without any notification) but you could get ESET NOD32 and all other anti virus in some torrents just download the crack so you can update it free without any charges. [mygothic]

I use only norton anti virus it is free and safe.i dont pay a single penny for it. u can also use it it worths. [kirrugadu]

I've used a few in my time but Avira in my opinion is the best free anti-virus out there. Better than AVG, Avast etc [gohan2091]

hi all.. i had a major virus attack on my laptop last year and nothing worked.. In the end i had to reformat it.. i finally downloaded spybot which is actually free and i have never had a problem since.. works better than all the ones i actually paid for. [arunl22]
I paid for a spybot ($39) and it didn't protect me at all... I thought i was getting a free one.. and then when it asked for the money.. I just went ahead and paid thinking I would have a good one... not! [OreoCookie3]

I wouldn't bother with any of the free ones really. When my McAfee ran out, I decided to get a free AVG download.. in just a few days my computer was totally infected and it wouldn't even get online.. I had to do a complete factory restore and then I put McAfee back on there. I like McAfee.. it's what my computer came with... and it does wonders for my computer.. it never gets infected at all. [OreoCookie3]

I would go with A.V.G. or Antivir, either one, they both work very well. I prefer the AVG trial version...it has everything you need. Also, for more added protection, you might want to download Microsoft's "Defender" as well. It's absolutely great and will scan your entire system for ANYTHING that may appear dangerous...will let you know...and will clear it for you....also free. There is absolutely NO need to pay for an anti-virus these days. Plenty of FREE good ones are available on the internet. The two above are about the best that's out there right now, but I'm sure there are others that are just as good. I like these ones. cd [crazydaisy]
Pardon me...the AVG is not a trial version, but does have a free version with a few features not included if you were to purchse the full version. However, these few features are really not all that important, and you can still get a great anti-virus even without them. cd [crazydaisy]

HI you can use avast it is very good and is free to use You google avast or avast .com and it will come up. and you can down load it Ity is a very good program I think it is just as good as any you can pay for but with all the problems with windows, all the virus that are out there to cause problems, not to forget spyware. I have gave up on windows and am now using Linux. It does all that I need on the internet and do not have virus proglems just use a very good firewall. Firewalls is the one program that everyone should have but most do not have one. it will stop a lot of virus and spyware beforeit gets to your computer. the only one that I have found is the best and you have to pay $40 a year. is zonealarm. Ok and I have found That McAfee and Norton cause more problems on a computer then they are worth. Good luck [rafhon9s]

i use abg its free and provides good results. [jabaz007]

try to use either kaspersky 10 anti-virus or panda internet security this is for free . it is working [kumar88]

Friend use Microsoft Security Essentials its not a full fledged anti-virus program but provides good protection and its free( only if your system got a genuine OS. Otherwise it won't install at all).I have been using it for 6 months and found it pretty good.Runs with less load on CPU and consumes less memory but it takes more time when its resolving some viruses that are found on a scan.Go for it. or else try AVG anti-virus its free and updates are available at anytime.Hope you found it useful. [tarun_200769]

I have used several anti-virus programs and I don't like to put down any of the other brands but I have found the best to be Avast and it is free. It has never let me down. Don't think that money buys the best product in software. I've tried most of the others and Avast will keep you safe. You will still want a program to keep your system tuned up and I can recommend using "Tune Up Utilities". It is by far the best in my book. It will keep your system running great. With a good anti-virus program and a good system checker you will have no problems. [cableman67]

I would recommend you to go for Microsoft Security Essentials. It is a free antivirus solution provided by Microsoft for its genuine customers. The MSE can be downloaded free from Microsoft official website itself. As per my personal experience, it is a very very nice free anti-malware solution i had ever seen. We will never feel like an anti virus is installed on our machine. Because it uses less resources, and silently monitors the machine all times. No annoying popups or dialogs. If a virus is found, then you can choose appropriate action and cleaning is assured. It doesnt had on the fly catching in case of downloading files. After the file is donwloaded, it will alert you only if the file is infected by any viruses. Doing so will not affect your system or network performance and download speeds. Microsoft Security Essentials got the best free Antivirus solution just after 2 months of its release. Antimalware testing group AV-Comparitives.org not only gave Microsoft antivirus the top rating for malware removal, but they had given it their best ranking in performance as well. AV-Comparitive ran a series of tests like downloading, copying, extracting and encoding, installing of files, and find that MSE is one of the only 3 products which completely removes and prevents malwares and along with that very light in system resources. So, if you had an option of best antimalware software free of cost from the world's top and best manufacturer of softwares, why would you need to pay others for protection? [jithinpg]

I have Norton provided with my computer but it's just a 3 months trial. So, everytime I re-install the system the offer will start again and it seems to me, after all the anti-virus I tried that it's the best one. Kaspersky is a great protection too but it slowdown my pc. As free anti-virus, I found Avast wasn't enough because I used to run it with Norton at the same time and sometimes Norton will detect attacks that Avast ignore... [Cannonball]

Norton is also fine, i guess.Though i am not sure if its cheap. For me, my service provider is providing me the anti-virus protection.but then we live in different countries at present. As far the free ones are concerend, they are not so great.I work in software industry and the free ones are actually designed for protecting you from known ones.Again, they are not meant for the newer ones. Thanks! [UltimateAsoka]

Hi,writersedge,I use kaspersky and it is great.Have a nice day. [longsdogin]

I am using Ubuntu which really don't need any anti-virus program because linux machine is consider very hard to get infect. However, for my other windows machine, I used AVG which I consider very good since it is FREE. [thomaslcy]
