i have a laptop and as far as i remember i have had left in on for a maximum of 20 hours i guess, i don't think laptops are actually meant to run that long, still there is no problem to it except it gets really slow and laptops also don't have ample space for cooling so that one could run for days and all...
of course if you have a desktop you could run it for days, so what is the maximum time you had left your computer switched on ??

As far as I can remember, I had switched on my computer for at least 18 hours continuously. This was the time when I am on vacation and I have all the time to be online. I think that too much computer in a day will affect our health in general. So, I usually switch on my computer for a few hours and then switch off. Usually, since I have a day job, I am just online for a few minutes or hours in a day which means my computer is not switched on most of the day.happy [learn2earn]
Very true, even I spend a lot of time in front of computer which I know isn't good for health and eyes equally, even though I use anti clear glasses, which prevents the rays from computer from spoiling your eyes. Still I am addicted and I can't resist. I read novels sometimes, but I am hooked to PC most of the day, so ultimately my PC is on for around 9-10 hours daily. When I am not using it, it is in standby mode, I switch it off at the end of the day! lol [pupupd]
The server I got here at home I bought ~ 1 year ago. Since then it was basically always running. Of course I had to restart it sometimes. My other machines I usually turn off in the night, as dowwnloads and other tasks run on the server. [aurerm]
It makes a lot of noise. But It for example holds the music/movie libary of the entire family. [aurerm]
I was I left my sister computer on for about 15 minutes,I answer ten Mylot discussions, and then I go and take me a shower, after I take my shower I get dressed, and then I get back on the computewr, and then I start answering more discussions again, and the computer is already, for me to use again because if i turn the computer off, I have to wait for it, to get all warmed up again.happy [notlistening2]
hi even i do that when i know i am going to be back on the computer soon.... mostly i turn off when i am going out or i know i am not going to use the comp and when sleeping... we have small breaks but don't let our computers have somelol have a nice day notlistening2happy [voldrox]
Hi voldrox, I think I have had left my computer on for more then 20 hours before. That is when I download something. And I am using a laptop. I don't know if there is any side effect for that. I am just afraid my laptop burned because of thatlol. But usually I shut down my computer for one or two hours before turn it on back now. [akuler]
@ voldrox, Thanks for the advices. I think that you are right about it. We should recharge and discharge our battery to make it life longer. Thanks again. [akuler]
When i just got my internet i was so excited. I spent time creating more than one emails. Signing up for websites and playing games. Not to forget chatting. Chatting a lot infact. I downloaded games too ad even movies and updated everything there is to update on my computer. I spent 2 FULL DAYS using the computer. Before my mom got upset and told me to come off. [Renhard]
Thanks for your help. [Renhard]
the maximum hours i have left my computer desktop or laptop on is 6 hours. i always turn is off so it can rest. i dont leave it on to long like others do. [AznBombr1022]
well that is certainly a lot healthy for your computer... keep it up [voldrox]
Around four days with my laptop. I haven't slept through that time much either. [Bionicman]
wow dude, sleep and let your computer sleep as welllol [voldrox]
one day in morning i was working on my computer and for some time i have to leave my computer ,so instead of switch offing in i decided to turn of the screen ,and got too busy in some work and forgot that i have left my system on and no one else also noticed that the system is on and i came to know at evening that what a fool i was [yogesh0505]
yeah many of my friends do that with their desktops, leave the cpu running and switch off the monitor, monitor eats quiet a lot of power supply... only thing is to see to it that your cpu doesn't get very heated. [voldrox]
I always leave my desktop on 24/7 all the time, the theory that computers stressed out is non-existant now. Even if my power supply dies after a couple of years, I will just buy another one. [virusxtreme24]
yeah i have to agree leaving the computer on isn't much the case to worry about if you have a desktop... [voldrox]
I'm using a desktop and running it for weeks is piece of cake. Mine run on AMD so I belong to those few with open cases, the heat just concern me more than dust. For me its just the power bill that want me to turn off my PC, how I wish I have other source to power it up. [ferdzNK]
hey i too have an AMD in my laptop, and have to say sometimes i also have heating issues but that doesn't mean the guys with Intel don't have problems...HEHElol [voldrox]
The maximum time I've left my computer on was 18 hours and I was on it for that long as well. Not continuously though but about that much time on there. [gloamglozer]
i know, we humans are so mean, we have breaks but don't let our computers have some...HEHElol [voldrox]
i've left on a few times overnight but i really don't have to worry about turning it on or off except when i go to sleep. i use a software now called Edison Software that you can set up to turn off your computer at a certain time whether it be 5 minutes or 1 hour so you can save money. when you set up the software it will calculate how much money you will save for the whole year for it automatically turning off the computer for the amount of time you set it at. it even shows you how much co2 emissions your saving when you conserve. its a good way to save money as well as make an environmental impact. you can download the software at verdiem.com. its free [elmiko]
wow... seems to be a pretty nice software... but like to turn off my computer even for just 1 hour when i know i am not going to use it... and yeah my computer also pretty much sleeps when i do and also does wake up sometimes that waylol [voldrox]
Yes, I do leave my computer on 24/7 too. It still runs perfectly fine. I do have to get it a lot fans to put inside to cool it down. There are times where the Internet connection was lost or I had to reboot the computer because it froze. But most of the time its okay to use. [nijolechu]
i have to say yes it doesn't matter much if you leave your desktop running for 24 hours but then the heating problem has to be taken care of, it happens a lot of times that the computer doesn't respond properly when hot, and also sometimes results in a hang, so watch and let your computer also to sleep sometimeslol [voldrox]
I don't know .May be half an hour.Sometimes I received a call from my friends, they wanted me to do something .Then I went to meet them ,I don't know how long it would take me to deal with them.Unfortunately,I often forget to let my computer switched on .lol [mickly08]
it happens most of the times with me as well, i have some other work to do which will not take too much time and i leave the comp on but it so happens that it takes in a lot of time and i come back after quiet some time to notice i had left the computer left running, but these days i am not much doing that, i am switching it off, unless i am really sure of when i am going to return.... have a nice day mickly. [voldrox]
Hi, I remember that many years ago i have spent two days in turning on my desktop, now desktop runs one time for 6 hours at most a day and 8 hours a day in weekend, my laptop had ran for a week , i closed cover of laptop to let it sleep for a while several times in the midway, but in too hot summer and not turn on air con, i barely run desktop for two hours. Enjoy mylot! [ayukawasouhiko]
yes ayukawasouhiko i am pretty much enjoying out herehappy.. and hope you are doing great too...i see you have become more keen on keeping your computer healthy, that's good, we should let our computer have some rest too like when we have some rest... you are doing the right thing. [voldrox]
i download a lot of movies and other files from the internet and so a lot of times i keep my computer on for quite a long time. i have two computers. one is a latest one and the other one is an AMD Athlon XP. So, it is to a certain extent very slow with the recent softwares. so i use to download all my things with this computer and some times i have seen that the computer is running for three to four days straight and that also without any problem. [amitavroy]
hey amita i too sometimes download a lot of things from the internet, mostly songs and sometimes movies also... hmm i see you run your computer for quiet a long time, if it's a desktop then no probs, take care amita [voldrox]
the maximum time i left my computer on is less than 10 hours... i fell asleep while waiting for the download to finish, i planned to take a nap for a few minutes, but i sleep and woke up in the morning! happy [shhheila]
hi shhheila hmm i have to say it wasn't much time... even i have gone to sleep leaving my computer on.. in fact i had forgotten to switch it off and in the morning when i wake up and go to switch it on i see it is already runningw00t [voldrox]
My laptop was on for 3 days straight right after i purchased it. Just like you, i spent most of my time online. Internet is really addicted so we better watch out. Anyhow, i didn't know that laptop shouldn't be on that long. I was under the impression that desktop and laptop are alike. Happy mylotting [underdogy]
HEHE now you know right that laptops aren't meant to run that long... yeah i have to agree many people like fidgeting with their new computer when they buy it, it is really exciting when it's all neww00t [voldrox]
I left my computer switched on maximum for 11 hours.During holidays I like to spend a lot of time chatting online with my friends. It will be some 4 to 5 hours... Otherwise on working days I keep switched on my computer for 1 to 2 hours. I think there will be no problem with the computer if it is kept in a properly ventilated room and kept switched on for hours.May it be a desktop or a laptop, proper use can increase there life. We should always check the temperature of the computer ,so that when it gets too hot it is always better to turn it off and let it cool or should be fitted with proper cooling fans so we can use it for hours without worrying. [Newpal]
yes Newpal the heating of the computer is the main thing to check, you can run your computer as long as it is not showing any signs of stress, and mostly the heating causes stress, even i sometimes like to chat with friends on weekends and sometimes do that for long, otherwise i run my computer for 5 to 6 hours at max... have a good day Newpal.cool [voldrox]
I always have my desktop on.It sits in standby mode when not in use.Seems as if ,I have more problems when ,I do turn it off. But there is always exceptions to every rule, like when friends come over and want to use it.Then I turn it off, because I have a big peeve with people taxing my fans,on my pc for their own needs.I feel if they need to use it that bad they should get the internet them selves. [Capsicum]
hey capsicum, earlier i too didn't let anyone use my laptop, some people just come to you for using your computer and it doesn't feel good that way, but these days i let them use if they have some genuine work, otherwise it is still a no no to them from me. .. yes many people do leave their computer on when they know they are going to attend to it after a while and i too adopt that method, have a good day Capsicum.cool [voldrox]
I have left it on for almost the whole day. After a few a days i had left it on for almost around 3 days as i wanted to download movies. For cooling purpose i had to open a side of my cabinet and also open the window do that the system does not get heated. [shankarbaddi]
Ok thank you. I have kept it in vertical manner. [shankarbaddi]
I don't have computer, only have laptop. The maximum number is 5 hours. It was my holiday and I have nothing to do, so I browse the internet and do myloting from 11am until around 4pm.. of course I need to charge its battery several times and it's already hot! I feel afraid and never do it anymore. I prefer to switch it on for 2 or 3 hours, turn it off for 2 hours then use it again. I'm afraid it will break if too hot.. and it's my only laptopcry I need to keep it safe. Furthermore, it's not good for my health, sit too long in front of my laptop.. [ChrysanTflower]
I have to agree Chrysan computers sometimes are not good for our health, especially when addicted to it, it is nice to know you don't use much, and yeah it is a good thing you do, switch off and let it rest before switching it back on... it is how a laptop should be used, it is not meant to run at a stretch as in case of a desktop, have a nice day Chrysancool [voldrox]
Hmm..I think I once left my laptop continue to run for 48 hours, it's because I am downloading TV series and then watched it back to back. I know that we are not supposed to leave the computer on that long, but the internet connection here is quite slow, and if I addicted to one TV series, usually I cannot stop watching it simultaneously :) [sophisticated_boy]
HEHE i understand, sometimes the series is so interesting that you want to keep watching itlol. .. hmm i have to say 48 hours is quiet a long time, even I sometimes have a very slow internet connection at home and just can't do much forget downloading anythingblink, anyways have a nice day Sophisticated_boycool [voldrox]
One day when my parents were not at home, I got up early at dawn and switched on my PC. And when I had put it off, it was 3 am at night! This is the longest time I had put my PC online, 23 hours! Happy mylotting! [pranavpillai93]
Hmm i see Pranav, just be careful, you are using your computer very much when your parents aren't there, just take care you get some physical exercise too when you have lots of free timelol.... kiddin, but seriouslywink have a nice day Pranav. [voldrox]
the longest hours i switched on my pc is 9 hours.specially to download a movie.the pc when it is switched on takes many current.the current bill may increase.so friends beware of current bill. [hardino]
yeah just be careful with your current as well internet billslol... many people seem to let their computer switched on for the purpose of downloading, anyways have a nice day Hardinocool [voldrox]
What I can say is that my laptop is ON almost 24 hrs.....Only when hubby take it away, then it will Off. [shia88]
Hey shia . . . don't much spend time with your laptop attend to your hubby as well .... kiddinlol have a nice day shiacool [voldrox]
My computer is on a heavy work load and it is switched on the moment I wake up in the morning until I knock off which is around 3am. It will be approximately 20 hours a day. lol [zandi458]
Hey zandi... your computer seems to be sleeping when you do, take some rest as well as let your computer have somelol . . . have a nice daycool [voldrox]
But u can use a cooling fan with laptops too,as i am using one right now.I usually leaves my laptop when im too sleepy,it turns off automatically into sleep mode itself so nothing to worry about and just like i have said,im using a cooling fan where my laptop sits in.I left it running for 24 hours. But my kids pc,oh well,my youngest son sometimes always forget to turn off and then the next day his brother sees it's still on standby mode. [jaiho2009]
Hi jaiho i see you are using cooling pads underneath your laptop, it is a good idea, i am thinking of getting one someday, yeah it helps a lot, but also don't keep your laptop on sleep mode everday, it sometimes needs rebooting and your system is actually kinda refreshed when you reboot, so also let it switch off at time, take care about your kids, don't let them get addicted with the computers hehehappy have a nice day jaihocool [voldrox]
Hello friend, In my parts, I leave my computer on, in few minutes only not an hour. How about you? [aerous]
Your welcome my friend. I also thanks because you reply my response in your topics...have a great day! [aerous]
We have an online business so we have two and sometimes three computers on all day at our home! We do turn them off at night, but occasionally we have forgotten to, or been dowloading something and left it when went to bed and the computer has stayed on for around 40 hours! Most computers can handle staying on for long periods, but I think that the monitors do not like it as mine is not well at the moment! [RawBill1]
Yeah, I have heard this about laptops. Apparently the most common cause of them breaking is due to overheating. Ours is only ever used on a desk or kitchen table and never on our lap! Using them on your lap is dangerous as they emit electro magnetic fields (EMF's). Definately not something you want close to your private parts...lol. Ours is also always used with an external mouse and keyboard for this reason! :-) [RawBill1]
the longest that I had my computer running was three weeks to a month. But before i did that i made sure that the computer casing is well-ventilated as to prevent overheating. I also turn off the monitor if i'm not using it to "save" electricty. [lovelots]
OT: most of the names that i wanted to use were already taken so i ended up with 'lovelots' .. ;) [lovelots]
Wel, in our office, PC's are switched on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And there are around more than 70 PCs who run like that. I don't know. Our systems admin told us that our computers will automatically update themselves when we turn them on 24/7 [littlepinoy]
well, there are only one or two servers that should run 24/7.... butmany of the personal computers there in the office also are advised to be turned on always. Happy MyLotting too. [littlepinoy]
Don't know, probably less than 18 hours. I like to turn it off overnight, I hope it will last longer if it is not on as much. [K46620]
just take care of the heating problem and your new laptop will be fine [voldrox]
I have a desktop i believe i have left it on for long perionds before too. Playing games. But usually i turn it off when not ion use. My son in law keeps it on 24/7. Im not a wastefull person and dont like burning energy when its not used. [jdyrj777]
hmmm doesn't much matter if it's a desktop but yeah you do the right thing by turning it off when not in use. . . [voldrox]
The most I have left it on is about 2 or 3 days. I get a bit worried I am going to do some damage to it if I leave it on for too long but I like to keep it on so I can check my emails all the time to see if anything has happened. I only really have it off when I am asleep but I am really trying to use my Macbook less as it isn't really very good always being on the same thing all day. [pinklemonade]
yeah pinklemonade, just be careful coz 2 to 3 days is quiet long sometimes you know... anyways take care and have a good day... thanks againhappy [voldrox]
i have left my computer on for more than 8 hours and fell asleep on my chair. i could not avoid it. when i woke up i saw that the computer ws shut off but the monitor and desktop was on.i quickly put everything to off condition and did not use my pc for more than 4 hours.i have a zebronics desktop . i do not know its performance while on long hours use. [golvine]
well golvine no worries friend, it's a desktop you will have no probs with it, my friend sometimes keeps his computer on for days!w00t... as long as it's not a laptop you don't have to worry about heating that much. . . . thanks for responding and have a nice day!cool [voldrox]
Oh my goodness I think there was a time when my computer was switched on for a good 3 days, it was when I was downloading a rather large file via torrent so I kept my computer and my internet connection on. I do have a laptop and I keep it on a minimum of 18-20 hours a day, I bought a cooling pad for it and I keep a small electric fan, the really small ones that have come out lately, that I keep directed to the computer, it helps with the cooling and enables me to keep my computer for longer times. Yes, the heat does slow down the laptop if you keep it on too long. but maybe you can try what I did and maybe it can help you keep your laptop on longer. c",) [chaime]
hmm chaime, you are right, cooling pads are good for laptops, i have to try one as well, well your desktop was on for a good 3 days but since it is a desktop it won't really matter that much, yeah but laptops shouldn't be run for that long, i have also run my laptop around 12 hours long and it starts to show signs by slowing down, i should really be getting myself a cooling pad i keep on running my laptop for that long... thanks for sharing and have a good day chaime!cool [voldrox]
i only 8 becouse after my pc stop work [nautirus]
take care then nautirus don't run that long then, i guess it gets heated up... thanks for responding and have a good day!cool [voldrox]
I will have to say about 36-40 hrs. Not sure. It was a file in kpg or something format that contained like about the whole Dragon Ball anime!and it was only 80mb. When decompressed it became like 10gb or something. After running it for that long(that too in my laptop)I decided to check on the files extracted. Behold the @$!$ when I found that only 3 files worked,ad the rest didn't!!!!!!! Its was the most disappointing moments.(crying) Thats it So whats ur story? AP [alexpaulrox]
well yeah i have left my computer idle.... decompressing is a lot of work, oh yeah i remember one more instance i had left my computer on over night, i was defragmenting my hard disc and it was taking a lot of time so i just left it like that and finally switched off the next morning... [voldrox]
Hello, I one time left my computer on for about 19 hours, and I was on it for the whole time completing an assignment from start to finish. It definitely wasn't good for the computer then. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!! [EliteUser]
Hey again, Yea it is pretty sad, but I completed the assignment from start to finish, over the whole night too. Take Care!happy [EliteUser]
