Computers are now very common and popular throughout the world. We have to admit that we depend a lot on computers, and computers do make our world an advanced one. However, every coin has two sides. Computers sometimes cause trouble as well. But in my opinion,its advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Firstly,as we all know, a computer can store and deal with more infornation than human brains can do. And they also make fewer mistakes. Secondly, with the birth of Internet, computers have become more closely connected with our lives. Wecommunicate with others, and get almost everything we want through Internet. It saves our time, money and energy. Lastly but not the least important, only when we have found the disadvantages of a new thing, can we improve them. So it is with the computer. In short, the computer itself is an useful tool. Whether it is good or not is decided by how people use it. Therefore we should use the tool properly and make it do more helpful and meaningful things for us.

In my opinion.. It's best invention ever. And the greatest too. If not for computers, i would have never responded to this discussion. We use computers for internet and games. We chat with our people and we can communicate a lot. We play online games and get to meet good players with the same interest too. We can even meet our future husbands/wives by using computer.. The computer is truly an amazing invention. It simplifies paper works, calculates faster, and I also love saving/editing pictures with it. Not to mention the tons of knowledge one can get while surfing the net. But as you said, it still has it's disadvantages. Criminals use computers to hack your personal accounts, molesters prey upon young kids in chatrooms, and the porn freely available is scary. So I'd rather have my kids grow up loving reading and arts, not computer games or chatting. But of course they have to learn computers, so they won't be left out. But I can honestly say we can live without it. I know how to use a typewriter(gosh I feel old!lol), I've got tons of books for knowledge, we have a developing center near our home, and for long distance communication, there's the phone and the snail mail. Computers are 1 of the wonderful creations by Human beings, i.e. by us. It helps us in many ways. U can do anything on it. It can b used for entertainment, business, profession. Computers may someday replace all of our jobs, which is why I say they will end the existence of the American dream: owning and doing what you want. They make certain things a lot easier. They are also incredibly addictive, sometimes I think the computer becomes a replacement for real life. On the other hand, I've met tons of people - including my husband - through the computre, so they can also enhance one's life. The biggest negative factor for me is just how toxic the component parts are. There is an increasing awareness of just how many heavy metals are used in building computers, and those all end up in the soil and ground water when the components end up in land-fill. Computers for me are very handy. I have 2 children and it makes life allot easier when I can do my banking and pay bills online instead of dragging the kids and myself down the street! We should be thankful for the birth of the computer. It makes everything fast and effecient. Atleast now, we don't have to wait days to receive an info from our friend, relatives or family in a far away places. Computers have become an integral part of the everyday life of billions of people worldwide. For the most part, it's been a positive thing. Communication, research, business opportunities, and distance learning programs are examples of positive things that are possible because of computers. However, as others have pointed out, there are some negative things associated with computers. I think as a whole we have all become too dependant on computers. Alot of kids wouldn't know how to send a letter if they had to because all they do is e-mail. Many students can't do simple math because they have calculators to do it for them. And the Y2K scare is a perfect example of what could possibly go wrong with computers. Granted the whole thing was a bit far fetched but imagine if computers worldwide started crashing? Computers have become the lifesblood of modern civilization. We use it for the simplest of tasks, from warfare to cooking. It has taken over every aspect of our lives. Economies worldwide would in all probabilty crash if our access to almost instantaneous information was denied for a day. I love computers and I agree with you that is has its advantages and disadvantages. I got my own when I went off to school. It was great having my own computer to write papers and print out things in my room then having to walk off the library and wait to use a computer there. I was able to keep in touch with my family and friends who were scattered all over the state because it was cheaper than being suprised by a long distance phone bill. Its had its disadvantages as well. I would find myself putting my homework off to play computer games or chat. Email has taken over instead of handwriting letters which I miss. [incessantly]

i love my laptop, however i do thik i can be alittle reliant on it sometimes, for example i spend alot of my time talking to my boyfriend on msn via my laptop...i also spend alot of my time doing my university work on my laptop...i spend my free time on my laptop playing on my football manager game. but nothing can beat being with my boyfriend...a laptop isnt as fun to hug and kiss [vicky_lane4987]
